Police: 12 killed, 38 injured in shooting at Colo. movie theater

A heavily armed gunman killed at least 12 people and wounded 38 more during an early Friday morning screening of the new Batman movie at an Aurora, Colorado, theater, police Chief Dan Oates told reporters.

Earlier, police said 14 had been killed.

Police arrested a man believed to be the shooter in a rear parking lot of the theater, Frank Fania, a police spokesman, told CNN. The suspect was not immediately identified, though Fania said he was believed to be in his early 20s.

"He did not resist. He did not put up a fight," Fania said. Police seized a rifle and a handgun from the suspect, and another gun was found in the theater, he said.

Lets just face it folks – we all need to pack guns wherever we go – that will totally reduce all crime next to zero. Just ask any other industrialzed nations – well actually not cause that would mean that we might have to admit we are wrong – and that is just not the American way. As George H W Bush said – "I will not apologize for anything the USA does" – umm...... well if that's the credo for the USA and the NRA then maybe just suck it up and say too bad – just some 'collateral damage' from the 2nd amendment – oh, and I wonder how all these shootings add to the health care spending????

Has anybody factored in the health care spending costs to the 'everybody gets to shoot everybody' mentality in the USA? Do people realize that it costs money to take care of people who get shot??

just goes to show that they need to lighten gun laws. If even 1/10th of that cinema was packing that guy would have gotten out 2-3 shots tops before getting taken down by a hail of bullets.

Hey lefties, blaming crimes involving guns on the guns is EXACTLY the same as blaming drugs for drug problems. The war on drugs has worked real well huh. Now you fools want the govenrment to start a war on guns? It is commmon knowledge what you lefties think about the war on drugs. Get your heads out of your self centered asses & learn from history.

No, it's not the same. But nice try. Curiously, it was you right wing regressives that started the anti drug war debacle. And just like your ideas on firearms and the economy, it has been a complete disaster.

People shouldn't go to the movies. Lots of germs in theaters. Almost every time I go I end up with a cold or the flu.

Whatever 'dum patriot'. I'm a realist. I'm familiar with the Denver area. We'll see how it pans out. You really come across like a rabid dog...drooling all over this story. And either you're simply as stupid as you sound...or you're lying. Either way, you are officially a waste of my time.

WE are becoming a country of animals! That you cannot go ANYWHERE, ANYMORE, without the possibility of some nut job showing up is beyond comprehension. Marvel I agree with you totally. While this is a tragedy it is really scarey to think of the possibility of others being armed and trying to protect themselves. Look at the case of the 71 year old that fired at the two robbers. When you watch the video he was about 5 feet, maybe closer, from one, when he started shooting and he hit NOTHING!! I understand the need for people to carry a firearm, but there is a BIG difference in knowing how to use it and actually firing back at another human, especially when it is real! They have the shooter in custody. I do not care if he is crazy or not. A speedy trial, with a speedy execution! NO back room deals, no plea bargains! Just execute him!!

This happened during Obama's watch. In my opinion it is his fault. I hope he gets impeached.

The local police are in charge of the apartment, not the FBI. They are the ones who recovered the weapons.

I wonder if we should include improvement of mental health in our efforts to prevent massacres like this.

I don't know if this reactive verse is a good release for me, or really bad - as in evil. But it touches on the anger I feel. Why are people so sick? I know that mental illness is a real disease, even though I feel our society raises us to think it's a character flaw. It is shamefule that this educated man did not sense his disease and seek help from a qualified therapist. In my opinion, there is no compassion for this criminal, only for his victims. Justice will be served only by his death in prison.

Yes Michele, it's called BIG PHARMA. (sarcasm) look at the story Cnn did on the 3 billion in resti tution that the DOJ got just a couple weeks ago. Pharma has been catering to our society for a longgggg time; this is the result.

These insane acts cannot be anticipated. What's the difference between this guy and s serial killer who may kill 12a people one at a time over years...until they catch him??? Insanity can't be cured with rational laws, rules or regulations.
