Overheard on CNN.com: So long, Sherman; thanks for the laughs

Funnyman Sherman Hemsley died Tuesday at 74. The comedian, best known for his role as George Jefferson on classic TV shows "All in the Family" and its spinoff,  "The Jeffersons," leaves behind a legacy of laughs that has CNN's audience reminiscing about a different age of television and saying thanks for all the smiles.

A true entertainer

Carolae:  What a loss for the entertainment industry. George and "Weezie" were great together on "The Jeffersons." It was one of those shows that made you feel good when you weren't. You couldn't help but love him .. especially his walk and his craziness! Am hoping that TV Land channel or another channel will run "The Jeffersons" for a week. ... My condolences to his family.

SandraC:  He wasn't just an actor, but a professional singer. He even released a single "Ain't That a Kick in the Head"

R.I.P. Mr. Sherman, thank you for everything.

TV's golden age

puppetmaster: Mr. Hemsley will be missed dearly - I used to watch him and Weezy all the time as a kid. I guess I will have to watch some reruns to pay tribute the "Man,"  "The Legend," "George Jefferson." I loved that show ...  Prayers for his family and friends ...

desertrat218: Greatest shows ever were when he was Archie Bunker's neighbor! Those two were great together!

truegrissel: That was intellectual programming compared to the mindless programming for today's people.

felino2012: "Welcome Back, Kotter," "All in the Family," "The Jeffersons," "Good Times," now those were the days! These shows bring back so many fond memories for me of my childhood. The shows that we have on TV now aren't worth a s***, but that's just my opinion. RIP Mr. Hemsley.

blueeyeddevi: That's when TV was TV. And now we have Snookie. God is punishing us.

The good ole' days

cpc65I: Just had to see all the "movin' on up" jokes. I'm old enough to remember when he first appeared on "All in the Family" before he got the spinoff show. RIP, Mr. Sherman "George" Hemsley.

JJC1967: George Jefferson was the man. Another part of my childhood gone. RIP, sir.

Thanks for the laughs

Valdis Reid:  Moved on up, for the last time. So long Sherman, thanks for the laughs. You will be missed.

MotoJB: RIP ... thanks for the laughs and good times.

felino2012: RIP, Sherman. thanks for the many years of laughter.

My suggestion is that Penn State University build dormitories right on campus, and recover past, present and future abused kids from exploitation.

They could use the campus police to live in these dormitories as resident assistants, to make sure all rules enforced and 24 hr. security is in place at all times.

In addition, they could employ PHD professors, licensed theapy psychologists, nurses, and licensed staff from the Penn State School of Psychology to staff these 24 hr. therapy and recovery dormitories.

    My Thoughts,
    Cheers, Charles

Does anyone know where the above picture comes from? It looks much more recent, but he is standing in front
of the original Jefferson's set. Was this from a "Look back" TV special or something? I would be interested to know.
He was very talented, and my family used to watch the show and really enjoyed it. May he rest in peace.

Thanks, Sherman for all the love you gave us!!!! You had been blessed to do what I believe you really enjoyed doing, and that was making "US" all laugh. I used to really like watching you walk like a tressed rooster on " The Jeffersons" back in the day. Your presence is what made the show entertaining! God Bless!! We will miss you.

This is ridiculous they need to bury Sherman this man probably isn't a relative that's the price of being rich it's stupid. People always claim to be relatives that aren't. If he is really Sherman brother than do a DNA & if he is give him Sherman remains but if he is not sue him for defamation of character.

Another good reason to GET MARRIED people and quit living together. Make a commitment or move on. If he had married his live in she would have a real claim to what she is seeking.

Sherman, a beautiful person, I would see him walking on Van Nuys Blvd, in Sherman Oaks, and walk with him for a few blocks, he was a warm and wonderful, person, I have never met anyone who would make you feel, that way, especially in this town of egos. Thank you God for bringing Sherman to this earth for a short while.
    Thank you,
