8 badminton players thrown out of Olympics for trying to lose

Eight female badminton players were thrown out of the Olympics on Wednesday for trying to lose matches the day before, the Badminton World Federation announced after a disciplinary hearing.

"After a hearing this morning before the BWF’s Disciplinary Committee the following pairs were disqualified: Wang Xiaoli and Yu Yang (China); Greysia Polii and Meiliana Jauhari (Indonesia); Jung Kyung Eun and Kim Ha Na (Korea); and Ha Jung Eun and Kim Min Jung (Korea)," read a statement from the Badminton World Federation.

The players from China, South Korea and Indonesia were accused of playing to lose to face easier opponents in future matches.

How group stages may tempt athletes to throw games

The Indonesian and South Korean pairs appealed the decision, the BWF said, and a decision on their appeals is expected later on Wednesday.

The eight players concerned had all already qualified for the quarterfinals of the tournament before the final matches of the group stage on Tuesday night.

But the results of the last group matches mean the Chinese pair, Wang Xiaoli and Yu Yang - ranked No. 1 in the world - avoid potentially facing another top Chinese duo until the final on Saturday.

The two lackluster contests in London angered the watching crowds.

British sports fans going into the Olympic Park on Wednesday called it "shocking" after seeing parts of the matches on television.

"It's not in the spirit of the thing," said Kevin Button, from Ashford in Kent, just outside of London.

"And it's so disappointing for the people who came to see it," his wife Tina said. "It leaves a bit of a sour taste."

China has no concept of what the world views as acceptable and not acceptable. They steal ideas and inventions from other nations and build these items with communist workers and somehow feel proud about it. They superimpose images of buildings and landscapes into city scapes of their Olympic games to make China look better than it is, who does that? They lie about ages of their athletes to win, they kidnap children from their homes and force them to train for various sports. Pretty much their whole culture just doesn't understand what cheating is and why it is wrong, if they win the medals than they feel proud no matter how it happens.

Yeah, they send spies into private companies to take pictures and figure out how to make new products and bring the info back to China. You must be thinking of things invented 2000 years ago by the chinese that the world would have figured out on their own anyways.

Hi, Pika. Thanks so much for blaming Chinese and being racist. So it looks like you have some concept of what you view is acceptable and unacceptable. In that sense, please tell British Museum, Metropolitan Museum, and so on to return all those antiques and artifacts you western people have stolen and robbed to their home countries, a large amount of which was from China btw.

What's wrong with that? Who would not do if there is easier way to get a gold? Sprite of Olympic? You are dreaming? Blame its system not those players.

I think the issue is the top ranking Chinese team avoided playing their fellow Chinese team until final by losing. It is more about helping other Chinese team a chance to medal. They were the best team and would likely win against anyone that they faced.
But like few members stated I am more concerned about doping. The testing is always behind the doping. Marion Jones was never tested positive despite all those year round testing. In China, the doped athletes will never be caught as the ruling Chinese Communist Party is the culprit. CCP has a political motivation behind pushing athletes to win a gold medal at any cost. They will do anything to keep it under the wrap.

    • Really?

If you already concluded there is systematic doping in China, you should attack every Chinese athelete. I'd say let's celibrate Ye's achievement for being the best doper (word?).

      Sore losers.

  6. Really?

This is not throwning a game to win a bet. This is to lose a game to win Gold within the rules. If Olympics doesn't like, it should change the same. They should reprimand the rules makers instead.

It does suck for the spectators though.

This is rediculous. I can lose without even trying. These guys had to try and lose? I'm a much gooder loser than them.

Sounds like strategy not sandbagging. If you were already in the quarterfinals, why wouldn't you look for the weakest opponent and try to match up against them?

Do you have any evidence to say so?
US always blames China on their human rights.
But look at what you say and what you do to this little girl. You are ashamed.
Why could't you BIG US just congratulation to this talent girl!

Please stop keeping a knave thinks of others in terms of your own desires.

I believe the whole teams from the countries involved should be kicked out. Surely, the coaches directed the players to do this.
