'Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day' sets record, restaurant chain says

Chick-fil-A says it set a sales record on Wednesday, the day that supporters rallied around the fast-food chain amid a debate over its president's opposition to same-sex marriage.

The chain won't release sales numbers, but "we can confirm reports that it was a record-setting day," said Steve Robinson, Chick-fil-A's executive vice president of marketing.

Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee had called on people to buy food at the chain on Wednesday, which he dubbed "Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day," after a backlash against the company and their president.

The controversy started after an interview with the fast-food restaurant chain's president and COO, Dan Cathy, appeared in The Baptist Press on July 16. He weighed in with his views on family.

"We are very much supportive of the family - the biblical definition of the family unit," Cathy said. "We are a family-owned business, a family-led business, and we are married to our first wives. We give God thanks for that."

On a Facebook page Huckabee created announcing the event, more than 620,000 people said they would participate.

He called for a response to a backlash against the restaurants and its president. Customers flocked to the restaurants on Wednesday, many showing their support for the chain and Cathy's opposition to same-sex marriage.

Gay rights activists are planning to hold a "national same-sex kiss day at Chick-fil-A" on Friday.

Not sure why gay people have a need to kiss in public, especially in front of children, but they have the right to further diminish whatever they are trying to achieve. I do suggest that they be careful because there are a lot of crazy people out there across the Nation, and the police can't be posted at every location.

A double murder with bloody threats in every Chick-Fil-A would be a great advertisement for them. "Our food is to DIE for." or the slogan could be "Come to Chick-Fil-A for the food, leave because a couple of thugs think you are gay."

I think it's gross to see fat people eating and since chick-fil-a is fat fried greasiness, I imagine a lot of obese closed minded idiots heading to the trough. The real agenda here should be less fat people making out in public, swapping grease.

Great to see such massive support for what (traditional marriage) that just a few short years ago, who would ever have dreamed it would have to actually be defended?!? LONG before Jews or Christians were on this Earth, MARRIAGE was a long-standing and hallowed tradition among countless peoples, religions & sects!! And we're just supposed to roll over & play dead when a handful of people want to turn tradition on its head?!?

Bring back dowries, and women are property, and marriage is really just a ceremony so a father can take his property (his daughter) and sell her to another man.

Sorry "joy" (nice name btw, I'm sure all minorities think of you as one) but the original "tradition" of marriage has changed throughout the centuries and will continue to evolve, in spite of your "loving christian" values. You can selectively view history and claim marriages are actually the same as they were thousands of years ago, but it doesn't make you right. And please consider a name change, maybe "ugly bigot" instead of joy. Just an idea 🙂

I suspect that traditional marriage is threatened more by Christians than by gays. Anyone who thinks men will stop dating women for any reason at all is hallucinating.

Just because it is tradition, it doesn't mean that it was a moral and correct position for all of those years. In the end, this is a wrong that is being corrected. At least our leaders care more about doing the right thing, despite it still being popular to discriminate against others.

Your marriage doesn't affect others. So why should the marriage of Gays affect you in any way? Other than you simply enjoy discriminating against others ... who have no influence over the orientation they have. Does that sound like a moral position for you to take?

Dan and Bubba Cathy have wrecked Truett Cathy's business, and I hate to see it. Mr Cathy wasn't the kind of man who'd use his money to oppress people. It's like what happened when Howard Johnson died.

"Does your hatred keep you warm at night?" – Sure does, buddy. I hate the evil perversion of God's beautiful creation with every fibre of my being, and if you had any concern for your own soul, so would you.

I honestly don't understand what the big fat hairy deal is here...

The owner of the restaurant chain, being a Christian did not pull a Pat Robertson and didn't go on national television saying that gay people were going to burn in hell. All he said was that he believed that marriage was between a man and a woman.

You are free in the USA to say that. If you don't like what he said, it is very simple; do not eat at the restaurant. Simple as that.

As much as the gay community has freedom to say how they feel and what they believe, I think that it is fair for a Christian business owner to say how he feels and what he believes. The restaurants do not have a sign that says "gay people not allowed". They employ gay folks all the time and serve them.

Let it go folks. This has blow up out of proportion.

The issue is that gay/lesbian people are so tortured inside that they have an unusual craving for the approval of others.
