'Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day' sets record, restaurant chain says

Chick-fil-A says it set a sales record on Wednesday, the day that supporters rallied around the fast-food chain amid a debate over its president's opposition to same-sex marriage.

The chain won't release sales numbers, but "we can confirm reports that it was a record-setting day," said Steve Robinson, Chick-fil-A's executive vice president of marketing.

Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee had called on people to buy food at the chain on Wednesday, which he dubbed "Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day," after a backlash against the company and their president.

The controversy started after an interview with the fast-food restaurant chain's president and COO, Dan Cathy, appeared in The Baptist Press on July 16. He weighed in with his views on family.

"We are very much supportive of the family - the biblical definition of the family unit," Cathy said. "We are a family-owned business, a family-led business, and we are married to our first wives. We give God thanks for that."

On a Facebook page Huckabee created announcing the event, more than 620,000 people said they would participate.

He called for a response to a backlash against the restaurants and its president. Customers flocked to the restaurants on Wednesday, many showing their support for the chain and Cathy's opposition to same-sex marriage.

Gay rights activists are planning to hold a "national same-sex kiss day at Chick-fil-A" on Friday.

This will all go away when the intolerant gay groups involve realize they are wasting energy on protesting something we all the freedom of: Speech!!! This is just a case of emotions getting the better of large gay-agenda groups (aka there is no real point). They have a right to disagree with Chic Filet, and a right to protest, just as supporters of the restaurant chain have the right to give them as much business as they like. You can't shut down the business because they disagree with your views. So ANY attention on Chic Filet will only boost business. Good for them.

"Intolerant gay groups" Otis? – think you are pointing your finger in the wrong direction.

"Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother's eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? 4How can you say to your brother, 'Let me take the speck out of your eye,' when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? 5You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother's eye. Its easy to speak of the virtues of freedom of speech when all your rights are fully secured. When you are denied equal protection under the law (can be fired from your job for being gay, can be denied housing for being gay, can't marry the one you love for being gay, are denied adoption rights for being gay, bullied in schools for being gay, etc) lets see how tolerant.

What's sad about this whole thing is that you don't have to be gay, or support gays, or even like gays. All that is asked of you is that you respect their right to live a happy life, just like you do. But, the Christian right seems to have taken the position that gay people, because they are not exactly like them, shouldn't even be alive. Other examples of that are the Nazi's and the KKK.

That's true Rick. People on this board keep calling the gays and liberals nazis. All they do is boycott, protest and try to pass equality laws. What about that pastor that wanted to fence in all the gay people and airlift food to them? what about the ones teaching their kids it's ok to bully gay people in school

That is such a broad generalization of what you perceive Christians believe. In all the controversy I don't believe I have read or heard one christian say that gays should not be allowed to live. I am a christian. I have a niece who is in a lesbian relationship and I love her dearly. I don't believe she has made the right choice of lifestyle because it is very clear in the Bible that a marriage is between a man and a woman. I have friends that are gay, I don't hate them or condemn them. Dan Cathy is simply saying he believes in the traditional marriage. He didn't say, I wish the world was rid of gays. Don't condemn all Christians as haters because it simply isn't true.

Their food sucks. It's also incredibly bad for you from a carbohydrate, grams of fat, and cholesterol perspective. Lots of fat, unhealthy patrons at CFA, ever notice? But that's okay because COO Dan Cathy doesn't give a good darn about the customer's health. He just wants their $$$ so continue eating at the CFA slop trough sheeple. Its just a matter of time before you'll be shunned and ridiculed for your choices.

  8. CFA Funds Hate Groups

Would gay-friendly businesses support hate groups? No, I guess they would support love groups or acceptance groups or maybe even feed the hungry. There is nothing friendly about hate groups.

My favorite thing about Christmas is pniullg each ornament out of the storage box and remembering the story that goes with it. All our ornaments represent a special moment in our lives from the year it was given. I can think about getting my license, getting married, having my third baby just by looking at each one.

Really? You can assay the gasoline at the pump and definitively determine its provenance?

Personally, I don't care what the chicken place says, so long as it abides by the law. And if Huckabee wants to rally the close minded religious zealots, go ahead.

The ultimate action that progressives could foist upon this place is to adopt and promote vegetarianism. Stop eating chicken and Chick-fil-A would have no raison d'être.

Meanwhile, gays get stoned, shot or hanged to death in middle eastern countries and gays here buy gas that mostly comes from Mid-east oil. I don't see anyone hanging out and protesting at the pump. I bet said mayors aren't riding bikes to work.

Ok, so consider that there are at least some portion of Chick-fil-A employees who are either gay, friends of gay people, fed up with intollerant religious nuts, or just plain pranksters.

There's a LOT of Chick-fil-A stores in the US. I'd say a large number of those employees are fairly young. Young people are not known for their best judgement.

Now, what do you get when you put all that together?

A RECORD number of people eating all sorts of nastiness that was added to their sandwiches...

    thank you for reading.
