'Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day' sets record, restaurant chain says

Chick-fil-A says it set a sales record on Wednesday, the day that supporters rallied around the fast-food chain amid a debate over its president's opposition to same-sex marriage.

The chain won't release sales numbers, but "we can confirm reports that it was a record-setting day," said Steve Robinson, Chick-fil-A's executive vice president of marketing.

Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee had called on people to buy food at the chain on Wednesday, which he dubbed "Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day," after a backlash against the company and their president.

The controversy started after an interview with the fast-food restaurant chain's president and COO, Dan Cathy, appeared in The Baptist Press on July 16. He weighed in with his views on family.

"We are very much supportive of the family - the biblical definition of the family unit," Cathy said. "We are a family-owned business, a family-led business, and we are married to our first wives. We give God thanks for that."

On a Facebook page Huckabee created announcing the event, more than 620,000 people said they would participate.

He called for a response to a backlash against the restaurants and its president. Customers flocked to the restaurants on Wednesday, many showing their support for the chain and Cathy's opposition to same-sex marriage.

Gay rights activists are planning to hold a "national same-sex kiss day at Chick-fil-A" on Friday.

c'mon citizens. a LOT of americans don't accept gay marriage. a lot of americans didn't want women to vote, didn't want whites to marry blacks, didn't want blacks to have ANY civil rights. at one time even divorced people were discriminated against in this country. it's no big deal because in all of these cases, and in this case, those people are on the wrong side of history, a history in this country that is a struggle to live up to american ideals of freedom for all. so, let 'em enjoy those chicken nuggets, it doesn't mean a thing.

I see no reason to celebrate record breaking numbers of people going to Chick-fil-A. It shows how much hate and intolerance exist in America. It's very sad.

If people speak with their wallets, then I think liberals had been shuttered down.
And yeah, what Chic-Fil-A is serving is better than what the Mayors of Chicago, Boston, SF, and Philadelphia are dishing out....
How's the crime there in Chicago, Mayor Rahm?
The progresssive are always looking to breakdown the individual and blend them into the state.
They take non-issues and make them issues.
The freedom of speech coupled with the separation of religion and state is still alive.
If you want to get married find God, religion and a church, if you want a civil union do what the communists did find yourself in front of the State and a magistrate.

yeah...for one day. Good luck bolstering those numbers for the next FOREVER when a large portion of the country will avoid them.

A one day spike in sales, big whoop. Will their sales on August 2nd be of any note? How many of those customers attending on the 1st will continue to patronize Chick-fil-a? Compare that to how many customers will continue to not patronize the restaurant.
This is similar to prior gas boycotts. Don't buy gas on March 2nd to show the oil companies we're not happy with their high prices. Well, we'll just buy gas on March 1st or 3rd. Those companies didn't really take a hit in sales over a month.

86% of Americans consider themselves Christians... Cathy is one smart business man and you all flocked to hand over the money you have been working so hard for... he took you all. Awesome.

JayneQP you are disillusion "86% consider themselves Christians..." that's like checking a box on the census form... what the heck does that mean – nada! I would bet that if Christ were here at this juncture he would weep – all the hate from people using his name.

It's so easy when you are the majority, to give your time, money, verbal support to those that are also in the majority. Would these 'supporters' have shown up if this were a muslim-owned, wiccan-owned, or hindu-owned company who said they support 'traditional marriage'? This was nothing more than an arrogant display of people puffing up their chests to declare how morally superior they are to anyone else....just like Christ would NOT have done. This wasn't about free speech since nobody was preventing, or even threatening, to limit that.

Could not agree more. There is a part of this country that fears all change, wants things only their way, wants the clock TOTALLY set back to 1950, complete with powerless females and minorities. I'm sure they all trotted happily to Chick-fil-a to support those views.

Actually liberals would prefer alternative sources of energy but unfortunately conservatives like yourself fight tooth and nail against anything that may harm oil industry profits.

That is because green energy is a myth. Wind turbine create turbulance not allowing the earth to cool, comppunding this mythical global warming. Solar panels require toxic gases with 10,000 the potency of co2 greenhouse effect. Geo thermal comes with a risk of volcanic activity. Cfl ligjt bulbs have mercury. each and every green energy alternative is even more destructive to the environment than coal and oil.
