Police chief: Temple shooting being treated as "a domestic terrorist-type incident"

[Update 5:16 p.m.] Oak Creek, Wisconsin, police Chief John Edwards said authorities are treating Sunday's shooting at a Sikh temple in that community as a "domestic terrorist-type incident," adding that the FBI will head the investigation. There was a service going on at the time of the shooting. Edwards was not willing to divulge any information about the shooter or the victims. No one is still inside the temple, he said.

[Update 4:52 p.m.] President Barack Obama said Sunday in a statement that "at this time, the people of Oak Creek must know that the American people have them in our thoughts and prayers" and vowed to "provide whatever support is necessary." He added, "As we mourn this loss which took place at a house of worship, we are reminded how much our country has been enriched by Sikhs, who are a part of our broader American family."

[Updates 2:45 p.m.] Greenfield police Chief Brad Wentlandt says four people were found dead inside the temple, three dead outside; one of those outside was the gunman.

[Updates 2:27 p.m.] The suspect shot by an officer was killed, authorities said.

[Update 1:57 p.m.] One officer was shot multiple times, and one suspect was also shot, Greenfield police Chief Brad Wentlandt said. The officer is expected to survive. Wentlandt said the suspect was "put down."

[Update 1:42 p.m.] People are believed to be trapped inside the temple, the area's city councilman said. "As far as I know, it is still an active situation," Alderman Dan Jakubczyk told CNN.

Who belongs to the Sikh community?

Police at scene of Sikh temple shooting

[Update 1:22 p.m.] Two men have been admitted to Froedtert hospital, a hospital spokeswoman said. One is in critical condition in the surgical intensive care unit; the other has been sent to an operating room.

[12:39 p.m.] Authorities responded to an incident at a Sikh temple in Milwaukee County on Sunday, where at least one body was seen lying in the parking lot. CNN affiliate WTMJ is reporting that multiple people may have been shot outside the temple.

WTMJ reports that the gunman may be on the loose. Aerial pictures show multiple bodies in the parking lot.

The shooting happened at about 10:40 a.m. local time, according to WTMJ.

Sikhism rose up 500 years ago in India as a monotheistic religion that rejected the caste system and scriptures of Hinduism.

Some of you guys throwing jokes about Sikh's need to get your heads checked.

-Sikhs are not muslim they actually fought against muslims because they tried converting them.
-Sikhs are some of the nicest people you will meet. They frown down on violence.
    – Sikhs do not worship cows like that idiot Jeff2 has said. Sikhs believe in one ultimate god from the teachings of the past 10 gurus.
-Sikhism is its own religion. Sikhs are not Muslims or Hindus.

How do I know all this? I am Sikh. I bet all of you ignorant, misguided souls find some time to actually educate yourself.

Guns are not the problem, STUPID people are the problem. You can stop the sale of guns in the United States today and people would just go to Mexico and buy them.

Better education and more high paying jobs are the answer to solving crime and mass murders.

  6. ListenToYourselves

Y'all should listen to yourselves..."Sikh not Muslim" So if the victims weren't Sikh it would be okay or justified? Since when does someone's religion make their slaughter more or less "acceptable"? The killing of innocent lives is deplorable. Period.

Guys, For those who don't know who Sikh's are. Sikh religion was created from the mountain-frontier state of India to fight against Muslim invaders to the country and to protect women and children from their altrocities. They stand for maintaining peace, respect and defend women and helpless and they are most honest, friendly and trustworthy community who anyone can count on when in crises. India's prime minister Dr. Manmohan Singh is a Sikh, who is also one of the world's greatest economist.

I don't know the details but wanted to say Sihk's are awesome people with a great history that is very similar to American history: escaping religious and class persecution and fighting for their freedom as fiercely as any people ever. Also, like Americans, they are not to be messed with. Just a recomendation. Thats why they make great Americans, and our Militaty is lucky to have the ones that they do. PS did I mention, you really don't want to mess with them? They fight for peace and freedom, the Nobelist of all fights so you're not going to beat them easily. Try loving them and you'll be rewarded ten fold. Otherwise, you're on your own. Read about them before you cast judgement. The Internet is real good for that.

Really? It wasn't the gunman? Kind of like if we didn't have cars there wouldn't be accidents? If we didn't have baseball no one would ever die from being hit with a baseball or a bat? Your grammer is poor and so is your idiology.

Your "Lord God" is exactly like the other gods. You have a book... they have a book... yours came from mythology (assuming you're Christian yours came from Horus – the Egyptian God)... there's came a prophet too... yours has no foundation in actual proof or truth.... same with them. You're ready to die for your God and so are they. Your God causes you to be hateful to others – just like theirs... You're ready to kill for your God (based on history and recent events) and they do it all the time. Religion is a disease and weakness in man makes it attractive. We always create a way to become imortal – at least in our own minds.
