Police chief: Temple shooting being treated as "a domestic terrorist-type incident"

[Update 5:16 p.m.] Oak Creek, Wisconsin, police Chief John Edwards said authorities are treating Sunday's shooting at a Sikh temple in that community as a "domestic terrorist-type incident," adding that the FBI will head the investigation. There was a service going on at the time of the shooting. Edwards was not willing to divulge any information about the shooter or the victims. No one is still inside the temple, he said.

[Update 4:52 p.m.] President Barack Obama said Sunday in a statement that "at this time, the people of Oak Creek must know that the American people have them in our thoughts and prayers" and vowed to "provide whatever support is necessary." He added, "As we mourn this loss which took place at a house of worship, we are reminded how much our country has been enriched by Sikhs, who are a part of our broader American family."

[Updates 2:45 p.m.] Greenfield police Chief Brad Wentlandt says four people were found dead inside the temple, three dead outside; one of those outside was the gunman.

[Updates 2:27 p.m.] The suspect shot by an officer was killed, authorities said.

[Update 1:57 p.m.] One officer was shot multiple times, and one suspect was also shot, Greenfield police Chief Brad Wentlandt said. The officer is expected to survive. Wentlandt said the suspect was "put down."

[Update 1:42 p.m.] People are believed to be trapped inside the temple, the area's city councilman said. "As far as I know, it is still an active situation," Alderman Dan Jakubczyk told CNN.

Who belongs to the Sikh community?

[Update 1:22 p.m.] Two men have been admitted to Froedtert hospital, a hospital spokeswoman said. One is in critical condition in the surgical intensive care unit; the other has been sent to an operating room.

[12:39 p.m.] Authorities responded to an incident at a Sikh temple in Milwaukee County on Sunday, where at least one body was seen lying in the parking lot. CNN affiliate WTMJ is reporting that multiple people may have been shot outside the temple.

WTMJ reports that the gunman may be on the loose. Aerial pictures show multiple bodies in the parking lot.

The shooting happened at about 10:40 a.m. local time, according to WTMJ.

Sikhism rose up 500 years ago in India as a monotheistic religion that rejected the caste system and scriptures of Hinduism.

Well, Sikh terrorists did fill up the Golden Temple of Amritsar with weapons, and Sikh bodyguards did assassinate Indira Gandhi, but I'm willing to believe that all this is exceptional. I wonder, though, if this is some idiot who doesnt' know the difference between Sikhs and Muslims, and is fanatically anti-Muslim. I know that after 9/11, the Sikh cabdrivers in Manhattan were getting a lot of grief.

Are you kidding me? They were protecting their religion their temple you idiot. Educate yourself first. Wouldn't you do that for your religion. Indira Gandhi marched into the Golden Temple with military killing thousands of people. Don't be going around spreading false information that you probably have learned from a Non Sikh. Any religion in any country will use any means to protects its religion if someone tries to harm it.

Ms Daljit Kaur – Indira Gandhi would not have sent the army if Bhindranwale had not armed the Golden Temple. Bhindrawale was not defending his religion, he was only trying to save himself from being arrested for killing Nirankari's Baba Gurbachan. Read up on the facts before making any stupid statements.

Geez, mass shootings are starting to become a weekly occurrence. Don't go to a school, political gathering, theater, church or temple, or even McDonalds. It's beyond control. Have gun shall kill.

Right, except that it's not even in the top ten. Check Wikipedia: United States cities by crime rate. It ranks below the following cities: New Orleans, St. Louis, Baltimore, Detroit, Newark, Oakland, Washington D. C., Kansas City, Buffalo, Cincinnati, Philadelphia, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Atlanta, Stockton, Milwaukee, and Miami. That puts it at eighteenth. Grow up.

Chicago's murder rate is 15.6 per 100,000. Milwuakee, Miami, and St. Louis are all higher. Detroit's is 48.2. Mexico's is 18. Want to revise that statment, Roger?

If this had been a white neighborhood incident, we would have been blasted by more than needed coverage in all media.

Because it happend in a non white community. Sikhs never get coverage like this. On Sunday there's a lot of Sikhs at the Gurdwara so I'm SURE there are eyewitnesses.

How about waiting until the situation on the ground is stabilized before demanding the media to provide incorrect or incomplete facts. A hour too long for you to wait?

    First of all my condolences

Second , CNN should so research and then publish articles , Sikhism ha its own set of scriptures and its own set of beliefs it did not come into exitence due to rejection of hinduism. Hinduism is the ONE and ONlY true religion of the world which accepts everyone and anyone , stop spreading ignorant and racist messages , read the scripture first

Anyone from India is just a job thief. They steal American jobs and work for peanuts. I think they feed the peanuts to their cows.

Hey how about changing your name Mr. Kumar ? And Indians don't come and take jobs just like that. They work hard and it's not their problem that some "whites" don't want to be doing certain jobs so the Indians take those on. Stop hating.

For all the those who pass comment out of ignorance, the Sikhs have been fighting militancy/terrorism by Muslim ruler since the 17th century. Stop calling every minority a terrorist. They are one of the most hard working people with a formidable military background.Prime minister of my country is one of the renowned economist and happen to be a Sikh.

Ditto about Sikhs being some of the nicest people on Earth! I am not one, but I've met several and they are basically the nicest human beings I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. This is very very sad, but hopefully it will raise some awareness about these amazing people.
