Police chief: Temple shooting being treated as "a domestic terrorist-type incident"

[Update 5:16 p.m.] Oak Creek, Wisconsin, police Chief John Edwards said authorities are treating Sunday's shooting at a Sikh temple in that community as a "domestic terrorist-type incident," adding that the FBI will head the investigation. There was a service going on at the time of the shooting. Edwards was not willing to divulge any information about the shooter or the victims. No one is still inside the temple, he said.

[Update 4:52 p.m.] President Barack Obama said Sunday in a statement that "at this time, the people of Oak Creek must know that the American people have them in our thoughts and prayers" and vowed to "provide whatever support is necessary." He added, "As we mourn this loss which took place at a house of worship, we are reminded how much our country has been enriched by Sikhs, who are a part of our broader American family."

[Updates 2:45 p.m.] Greenfield police Chief Brad Wentlandt says four people were found dead inside the temple, three dead outside; one of those outside was the gunman.

[Updates 2:27 p.m.] The suspect shot by an officer was killed, authorities said.

[Update 1:57 p.m.] One officer was shot multiple times, and one suspect was also shot, Greenfield police Chief Brad Wentlandt said. The officer is expected to survive. Wentlandt said the suspect was "put down."

[Update 1:42 p.m.] People are believed to be trapped inside the temple, the area's city councilman said. "As far as I know, it is still an active situation," Alderman Dan Jakubczyk told CNN.

It's not mentioned in the article, but Sikhism was also founded as a way to get rid of doctrinal conflicts between Hindus and Muslims. A well-known Sikh quote says, "There is no Hindu, there is no Muslim." So even if you're bigoted against Islam (which you shouldn't be), you should still approve of the Sikhs.

Police are searching for at least 1 white male with 2 weapons, not a foreign Jihadist. There may be hostages. Thoughts and prayers for all involved.

Every time something like this happens, I assume it gets another 1,000 degrees hotter in Charlton Heston's region of the netherworld.

I wonder if the Devil has pried that gun out of his cold, dead hand, or if he's making Chuck hang onto it to remind him why he's there.

Sikhs are occasionally mistaken for Muslims here in the U.S. I wonder if the attacker thought maybe he was unloading on a group of Muslims. My thoughts and prayers go out to the victims and their families.

The story isnt complete yet, but not surprised about the Christian fundamentalist & radicals who have commented on the shooting – supporting it as "God's will against non-Christians" and "God giving the right to bear arms against non-Christians." Talk about holy books, terrorism, and killing non-believers. So...if it is a Christian radical who did this...Christian terrorists or will it be another "mentally disturbed individual?"

How can one tell the difference between a gun enthusiast and a homicidal maniac before it's too late? They all look alike to me.

You're comment demonstrates an exceptional level of ignorance. Gun enthusiasts virtually never commit crimes and most of those that commit gun crimes are rarely gun enthusiasts. Not even all lawful gun owners qualify as enthusiasts, but even the members of that broader category are more law-abiding than the public generally. To use your logic, as a member of the non-gun owning public, I can only assume that you are a thug or felon. Statistically, that statement is far more likely to be true than your own. By the way, an obvious example of gun enthusiasts are those competing in the Olympic marksmanship events. I suppose those individuals all look like homicidal maniacs to you?

I bet anyone anything that just looking at this stroy that the shooter who was probably ignorant and crazy probably is islamophobic and does not know anything about any other religions and cannot differentiate a Arab and a Sikh . I bet anything it probably stems from some sort of Islamophobia. sad day.

Sikhism is a branch of Islam. It is an offshoot

      August 5, 2012 at 1:46 pm | Report abuse |

Perhaps its also wise to differentiate between an arab and a muslim as well. There are many arabs that are not muslim, and many muslims that are not arab. In response to another comment, sikhism is no more an offshoot of Islam than Islam is an offshoot of Christianity.

People have been killing people since the beginning of time. Its annoying that based on such limited information, everyone tries to spin this timeless tale of tragedy into a narrative that supports their small opinions concerning modern american politics.

Well, yet another example of broadcast news brilliance. CNN won’t show police positions because they don’t know if the gunmen are watching, but they WILL say exactly where hostages are hiding. Well done. If “good” means jeopardizing lives. As dumb as terrorists who don't know anything about the people they target. Great day for the ol' US of A all 'round.
