Police chief: Temple shooting being treated as "a domestic terrorist-type incident"

[Update 5:16 p.m.] Oak Creek, Wisconsin, police Chief John Edwards said authorities are treating Sunday's shooting at a Sikh temple in that community as a "domestic terrorist-type incident," adding that the FBI will head the investigation. There was a service going on at the time of the shooting. Edwards was not willing to divulge any information about the shooter or the victims. No one is still inside the temple, he said.

[Update 4:52 p.m.] President Barack Obama said Sunday in a statement that "at this time, the people of Oak Creek must know that the American people have them in our thoughts and prayers" and vowed to "provide whatever support is necessary." He added, "As we mourn this loss which took place at a house of worship, we are reminded how much our country has been enriched by Sikhs, who are a part of our broader American family."

[Updates 2:45 p.m.] Greenfield police Chief Brad Wentlandt says four people were found dead inside the temple, three dead outside; one of those outside was the gunman.

[Updates 2:27 p.m.] The suspect shot by an officer was killed, authorities said.

[Update 1:57 p.m.] One officer was shot multiple times, and one suspect was also shot, Greenfield police Chief Brad Wentlandt said. The officer is expected to survive. Wentlandt said the suspect was "put down."

[Update 1:42 p.m.] People are believed to be trapped inside the temple, the area's city councilman said. "As far as I know, it is still an active situation," Alderman Dan Jakubczyk told CNN.

[12:39 p.m.] Authorities responded to an incident at a Sikh temple in Milwaukee County on Sunday, where at least one body was seen lying in the parking lot. CNN affiliate WTMJ is reporting that multiple people may have been shot outside the temple.

WTMJ reports that the gunman may be on the loose. Aerial pictures show multiple bodies in the parking lot.

The shooting happened at about 10:40 a.m. local time, according to WTMJ.

Sikhism rose up 500 years ago in India as a monotheistic religion that rejected the caste system and scriptures of Hinduism.

If your living in fear, that's on your own head. I hope you don't have a family. Who will protect them if someone like this comes around? Obviously not you. This kind of thinking makes me sad for anyone who might one day have to depend on a fellow citizen to help them in their time of need.

  7. peace out!

I hope that no one dies or is seriously injured. Only in America, where guns are free to be bought at anytime, and ignorance runs supreme, can bs comments like some of the ones posted here be deemed facts? Seriously... if American's start to realize that this world is a multicultural world and there are soo many cultures and religions (not just white/black/spanish and muslim) that live in this world, maybe – just maybe – there would be a thing called tolerance!!!

Panentheistic you insensitive jerks, if you're going to be reporting the news, at least do it right. And LD, quit lumping everyone into one group, Christianity has extremists just like every other religion. Guns don't kill people anymore than pencils misspell words. (My 6 year old actually tried that one.) I just hope the ones hurt will be okay and no one was killed. I've only known a few Sikhs, and they were all great people.

When you say you don't want to give any information that might aid the gunmen. What do you call saying that there are people hiding inside the Temple. You don't think that might lead to the gunmen doing another search? Seriously...we have to have newsmen and women that are smarter than this. You are putting people in jeaopardy.

Roger, you must not know history very well. After reconstruction, the dems and repubs fliped there stances almost compleatly. The gop is the racist hate filed christian bigot party, while the democrats are the party for equality. But you keep believing in fox news, with your head in the sand, and at the same time up your but.

Guns don't kill people, people kill people. It doesn't matter what color or race they are, no one has a right to take another life. A temple for them is a place of worship, just like a church is to us. Nobody has the right to tell you who to worship or to hold your religion against you. Much less start shotting at you for it.
