Police chief: Temple shooting being treated as "a domestic terrorist-type incident"

[Update 5:16 p.m.] Oak Creek, Wisconsin, police Chief John Edwards said authorities are treating Sunday's shooting at a Sikh temple in that community as a "domestic terrorist-type incident," adding that the FBI will head the investigation. There was a service going on at the time of the shooting. Edwards was not willing to divulge any information about the shooter or the victims. No one is still inside the temple, he said.

[Update 4:52 p.m.] President Barack Obama said Sunday in a statement that "at this time, the people of Oak Creek must know that the American people have them in our thoughts and prayers" and vowed to "provide whatever support is necessary." He added, "As we mourn this loss which took place at a house of worship, we are reminded how much our country has been enriched by Sikhs, who are a part of our broader American family."

[Updates 2:45 p.m.] Greenfield police Chief Brad Wentlandt says four people were found dead inside the temple, three dead outside; one of those outside was the gunman.

[Updates 2:27 p.m.] The suspect shot by an officer was killed, authorities said.

[Update 1:57 p.m.] One officer was shot multiple times, and one suspect was also shot, Greenfield police Chief Brad Wentlandt said. The officer is expected to survive. Wentlandt said the suspect was "put down."

[Update 1:42 p.m.] People are believed to be trapped inside the temple, the area's city councilman said. "As far as I know, it is still an active situation," Alderman Dan Jakubczyk told CNN.

The shooting happened at about 10:40 a.m. local time, according to WTMJ.

Does it matter what religion these people are? They were attending a service at their chosen place of worship and they were assaulted. There is no excuse for this, period.

It is really irking me that so many are saying "they aren't muslim!" as if an attack like this would be justified if it was a muslim temple being attacked.

      Sikhs are NOT Hindu.

According to Article I of the "Rehat Maryada" (the Sikh code of conduct and conventions), a Sikh is defined as "any human being who faithfully believes in One Immortal Being; ten Gurus, from Guru Nanak Dev to Sri Guru Gobind Singh; Sri Guru Granth Sahib; the teachings of the ten Gurus and the baptism bequeathed by the tenth Guru; and who does not owe allegiance to any other religion".[26] Sikhs believe in the equality of humankind, the concept of universal brotherhood of man and One Supreme God (Ik Onkar).

There are some sick sick postings here in response to this tragedy. Bet those of you making these horrendous comments wouldn't be doing so if one of your friends or family members was involved. Prayers and thoughts for all of those affected.

Sikhs are not Muslims. It's about time that people realize this. And why do they wear turbans? Because cutting their hair is forbidden in their religion. They keep their hair under the turban.

For those that are making accusations that someone attacked the Sikhs because they hate Islam are sadly mistaken, The Sikhs are mortal enemy's of the Muslims and they have a long history or wars and conflicts between them and in fact the reason why the Sikhs do no cut thier hair is because of Islamic conflicts between them, Sikhs can not cut thier hair until islamic oppression has been stopped.

Please tell the broadcast journalists to at least remember that it's a TEMPLE and not a church? I wonder if any of the journalists even know anything about the Sikhs.

"Sikhism rose up 500 years ago in India as a monotheistic religion that rejected the caste system and scriptures of Hinduism." Now anyone reading this is sub conciously led to hate Hindus. When talking about a non white country, the CNN authors always manage to slip in a bias against them.

Maybe it was just a guy who was mad at someone who happened to be Sikh. Are we so P.C. that if someone who is a minority is shot it has to be an act of racism?

India is a true democracy and don't want to split into countries based on religion. Also, I don't believe majority of Indians care about religin that much when compared to making their life better. This is how India works
    – Current Prime Minister is Hindu
    – The head ruling party is a Christian (Sonia Gandhi) not born in India
    – We had a President of India who was a Muslim

Actually, the current PM is a Sikh – the same religion as that of the people trapped in that Gurudwara.

    • No, current PM of India is Sikh

That's wrong. The Prime Minister of India is Manmohan Singh who is a Sikh. Get your facts straight. Sikhs are one of the most successful minority groups in India and make up over 50% of India's wealthiest state – Punjab.

Btw, I am a programmer and make 100 K/year. It is a "little" over minimum wage.

You need to do three things from now on that will make your life a little better 1) thinking 2) reading 3) refrain from posting idiotic comments without reading and thinking

Enough of this hatred! ENOUGH! Sikhs are innocent, peace-loving people. Many people are SO IGNORANT about who Sikhs are. THEY NEED TO LEARN. We live in the 21st Century in the United States of America. Please, make an effort to learn. Don't judge people on how they look. Sikhs wear TURBANS not towels; they keep their hair underneath it to keep it clean.

Please hold the Wisconsin Sikhs in the light. Please pray for them. We are a very peaceful community.
