Police chief: Temple shooting being treated as "a domestic terrorist-type incident"

[Update 5:16 p.m.] Oak Creek, Wisconsin, police Chief John Edwards said authorities are treating Sunday's shooting at a Sikh temple in that community as a "domestic terrorist-type incident," adding that the FBI will head the investigation. There was a service going on at the time of the shooting. Edwards was not willing to divulge any information about the shooter or the victims. No one is still inside the temple, he said.

[Update 4:52 p.m.] President Barack Obama said Sunday in a statement that "at this time, the people of Oak Creek must know that the American people have them in our thoughts and prayers" and vowed to "provide whatever support is necessary." He added, "As we mourn this loss which took place at a house of worship, we are reminded how much our country has been enriched by Sikhs, who are a part of our broader American family."

[Updates 2:45 p.m.] Greenfield police Chief Brad Wentlandt says four people were found dead inside the temple, three dead outside; one of those outside was the gunman.

[Updates 2:27 p.m.] The suspect shot by an officer was killed, authorities said.

[Update 1:57 p.m.] One officer was shot multiple times, and one suspect was also shot, Greenfield police Chief Brad Wentlandt said. The officer is expected to survive. Wentlandt said the suspect was "put down."

[Update 1:42 p.m.] People are believed to be trapped inside the temple, the area's city councilman said. "As far as I know, it is still an active situation," Alderman Dan Jakubczyk told CNN.

Comments on this prove that American's are intolerant and ignorant. Stop making uneducated, racist comments, and focus on what happened. Someone (or many people - who know's who or why) went into a place of worship and shot people. That is sick!!! This is why you AMERICAN's need to focus and lobby to get guns off the street! Stop your idiotic comments, and get with the story!!

Don Lemon's decision to cut off the Sikh national spokesman in mid-sentence was inexcusable. The man was making a very important point, even if it does not fit the "if it bleeds, it leads" definition of news these days. He was suggesting one possible outcome, and providing information on the shooting of a Sikh adherent as the first retribution for 9/11. I would have liked to hear him out.

So much ignorance about hinduism. Hinduism is a customizable religion with different concepts of God. Yet, it believes that there's only one God, but that God can assume any form. If God is all-powerful, why not? Hinduism believes that every person is temperamentally different and is attracted to a certain concept of God. So they created different concepts of the One God to make it easier for people to worship. So, Hinduism is quite monotheistic, they just accommodate everybody. It's the only all-inclusive religion in the world. And they lived in peace, until the foreign invaders came. They were also very prosperous. Casteism was a social problem, where the upper castes decided to exploit the lower castes. No where in Hindu religious scriptures is it written that the upper castes should exploit the lower castes. It's kind of like how the 1% runs the country and pays little tax, and the 99% pay more taxes than their pay.

Hi art, thanks for the comment. From what I've learned so far about Hinduism, what you've said is very well put. And Jenny, They are Indians. Not Native Americans, but what you say is correct about people calling Native Americans Indians, this should stop. If anything because it's confusing, not to mention insulting. God Bless everyone, and please everyone pray for these people, and give aid to them. We've got to spread love whenever possible, so this type of hatred is stopped. God Bless, everyone.

I thought hinduism had 3 gods which took different forms. I've never heard of hinduism being monotheistic.

Hi riamb60, Very true. You read my mind, one of the first things I thought is that this gunman(or these if there are multiple) were probably so ignorant of facts they thought these people were Muslim, given the anti-Muslim sentiment that's been apparent lately. We've got to stop this racism & hate. Everyone must do their part to educate everyone they come in contact with about love. God Bless.

"Sikhism rose up 500 years ago in India as a monotheistic religion that rejected the caste system and scriptures of Hinduism." Although this article had nothing to do with Hindus, anyone reading this is subconsciously led to hate Hindus for their caste system.( is the author trying to suggest that Hindus are the guys we should be really shooting at )

Like fox news presents facts in a way tailored to put the democrats down, similarly CNN puts the facts tailored to show anyone different from the average white man as evil.

Shows how much you were educated when you were a youth. Shame on you people. Media = Violence. My prayers are with you Sikh brothers and sisters!

I disagree with you and for your information Sikhs came about as the result of Islam. If you are familiar with the Hindu Holocaust you would know better. The Sikhs are very good fighters and have been dead enemies of Islam since their very inception, Remember that India was invaded several times by Muslims and the Muslims murdered millions of their people and as a result Sikhism was born as a group sworn to defend the lives of non-Muslims.
