Police chief: Temple shooting being treated as "a domestic terrorist-type incident"

[Update 5:16 p.m.] Oak Creek, Wisconsin, police Chief John Edwards said authorities are treating Sunday's shooting at a Sikh temple in that community as a "domestic terrorist-type incident," adding that the FBI will head the investigation. There was a service going on at the time of the shooting. Edwards was not willing to divulge any information about the shooter or the victims. No one is still inside the temple, he said.

[Update 4:52 p.m.] President Barack Obama said Sunday in a statement that "at this time, the people of Oak Creek must know that the American people have them in our thoughts and prayers" and vowed to "provide whatever support is necessary." He added, "As we mourn this loss which took place at a house of worship, we are reminded how much our country has been enriched by Sikhs, who are a part of our broader American family."

[Updates 2:45 p.m.] Greenfield police Chief Brad Wentlandt says four people were found dead inside the temple, three dead outside; one of those outside was the gunman.

[Updates 2:27 p.m.] The suspect shot by an officer was killed, authorities said.

[Update 1:57 p.m.] One officer was shot multiple times, and one suspect was also shot, Greenfield police Chief Brad Wentlandt said. The officer is expected to survive. Wentlandt said the suspect was "put down."

[Update 1:42 p.m.] People are believed to be trapped inside the temple, the area's city councilman said. "As far as I know, it is still an active situation," Alderman Dan Jakubczyk told CNN.

As a person who lived in India for 3 years, I've witnessed first hand how they treat others. They are racist. They make us look like the good guys...

Trust me, it is hard to make Muricans look like nice guys. You are a shining example. Shift the blame to the victim, why don't ya?

    @Indian-Hindu
They are not one. Sikhs are much different from Hindus. I respect all of God's religions but I'm not going to say we Sikhs are same as Hindus. We get labeled as the cow worshippers and get alot of hatred from that. Can't forget what Hinduism has done for Sikhism. Dude how can you practice both religions. If you can't stay with one religion you probably don't have much respect for your religion. I'm a Sikh I respect Hinduism as a separate religion but it's not the same as Sikhism. And there's is a difference between the two religions how can you not know and why go around saying don't separate the two of them?

Also, just for the record, the shooter was white. Any racists putting BS in the hands of other races need to stop. This is a prime example of why you can't blame a whole race for someone's actions. We need to put a stop to this terrorism; there were kids in the temple!

The proper term, which is not considered racist, is to call people from India "East Indian" Or Indian. Native Americans are just that, Native Americans.

"Indian" is used in this context as the term refers to the 'country' India. While native american is used for the native dwellers of America who were also called Indians. Both Indians are different

Native Americans often run casino's, specially if they are on their specific reserve. Has NOTHING to do with people from India. Try using your Google..it's pretty awesome for expanding your brain.

I've travelled to over 60 countries. India is the worst of the worst in terms of their treatment of people that don't measure up to their caste system.

I am in Canada, and i just happened to put on my scanner, when i saw on one of the feeds about the shooting. As i listened, i thought i heard that 8 people were dead. Was a white man with a backpack, baseball cap, that police were looking for. This was before the news broke on HLN, ( i only know this because i was watching HLN). They also had a blue barrel checked, but it was confirmed it was only water in the barrel. They were calling for greif counsellors to come out for family members waiting outside the Sikh.

I REALLY wish the reporters would stop telling those that they are questioning to be careful of what they say. DONT ask them if you dont want to hear them - Only the REPORTERS have to be careful of what they say, not the person they interview. Get better reporters CNN.

CNN needs to stop the hate propaganda against Hinduism. While it is true that Sikhs emphasize monotheism, the do derive their core beliefs from Hinduism. Like Hindus, Sikhs believe in Karma and reincarnation.

This is just one more instance of ignorance and hate mongering among the US media that causes people to enter temples with guns. CNN needs to apologize for suggesting that Hindus were better targets than sikhs?

Can CNN not show more sensitivity?

BTW: CNN-IBN, channels partners in India are well known for their misreporting and propaganda. The US parent does not seem to be any better.

Why @Vivian, are you on CNN if you so much despise what they do? Easy to hate the messenger unless, of course, the messenger presents the "news" your way.
