Police chief: Temple shooting being treated as "a domestic terrorist-type incident"

[Update 5:16 p.m.] Oak Creek, Wisconsin, police Chief John Edwards said authorities are treating Sunday's shooting at a Sikh temple in that community as a "domestic terrorist-type incident," adding that the FBI will head the investigation. There was a service going on at the time of the shooting. Edwards was not willing to divulge any information about the shooter or the victims. No one is still inside the temple, he said.

[Update 4:52 p.m.] President Barack Obama said Sunday in a statement that "at this time, the people of Oak Creek must know that the American people have them in our thoughts and prayers" and vowed to "provide whatever support is necessary." He added, "As we mourn this loss which took place at a house of worship, we are reminded how much our country has been enriched by Sikhs, who are a part of our broader American family."

[Updates 2:45 p.m.] Greenfield police Chief Brad Wentlandt says four people were found dead inside the temple, three dead outside; one of those outside was the gunman.

[Updates 2:27 p.m.] The suspect shot by an officer was killed, authorities said.

[Update 1:57 p.m.] One officer was shot multiple times, and one suspect was also shot, Greenfield police Chief Brad Wentlandt said. The officer is expected to survive. Wentlandt said the suspect was "put down."

[Update 1:42 p.m.] People are believed to be trapped inside the temple, the area's city councilman said. "As far as I know, it is still an active situation," Alderman Dan Jakubczyk told CNN.

Carman, couple of things – Sikhs are not muslims. I suppose if you came out of the shower with a towel wrapped on your head, we should shoot you right because you look like a taliban. ignorant.

secondly – if you are caucasian, keep this thought in mind – in the world of hitler, you wouldn't qualify, so don't act doesn't become you.

    thirdly – stop embarrassing us.

Now remember this article has nothing to do with the evils of Hinduism, but the author manages to slip in " Sikhism rose up 500 years ago in India as a monotheistic religion that rejected the caste system and scriptures of Hinduism." Now the shooter is a white Christian. The author however manages to use even this to make a statement against Hindus. Reading that statement again, seems like the author is trying to say, Hindus are the people that you really want to shoot at, coz they are the evil ones with the caste system.

I bet the author will censor this comment, because his bias would then be exposed.

Why are you assuming the shooter is a Christian? So far the news sources have not even identified the shooter. Do you have some ability that magically allows you to determine a persons heart and intention. Shame on you.

Please educate the public about Sikhism. There seems to be A LOT of people who don't know anything about the difference in religions. To see such ignorance in this day and age brings such sorrow to my heart. Please, we can only move forward as a nation if everyone in this country is educated about their neighbors, no matter what country or religion they are from.

CNN and the media should shut up and let the police do their work. Trying to zoom in from the parking lot across the temple, talking about texts coming from inside etc. put everybody inside in further danger. Just shut up. Journalism is one thing. Making it sensational and doing the opposite of what police told your reporters is plain wrong. I hope you gets sued.

In Vancouver I'm more than happy to have Sikh neighbours. Gentle and kind people. You should be so lucky to live next to one if they ever ask you to come to one of their wedding celebrations!

I feel bad for these people but they are all getting rich off their Indian casinos. I heard if they live on their reservations they get a check each month from the federal government, don't have to pay taxes, plus get part of their casino profits. These Indians have it made.
