Police chief: Temple shooting being treated as "a domestic terrorist-type incident"

[Update 5:16 p.m.] Oak Creek, Wisconsin, police Chief John Edwards said authorities are treating Sunday's shooting at a Sikh temple in that community as a "domestic terrorist-type incident," adding that the FBI will head the investigation. There was a service going on at the time of the shooting. Edwards was not willing to divulge any information about the shooter or the victims. No one is still inside the temple, he said.

[Update 4:52 p.m.] President Barack Obama said Sunday in a statement that "at this time, the people of Oak Creek must know that the American people have them in our thoughts and prayers" and vowed to "provide whatever support is necessary." He added, "As we mourn this loss which took place at a house of worship, we are reminded how much our country has been enriched by Sikhs, who are a part of our broader American family."

[Updates 2:45 p.m.] Greenfield police Chief Brad Wentlandt says four people were found dead inside the temple, three dead outside; one of those outside was the gunman.

[Updates 2:27 p.m.] The suspect shot by an officer was killed, authorities said.

[Update 1:57 p.m.] One officer was shot multiple times, and one suspect was also shot, Greenfield police Chief Brad Wentlandt said. The officer is expected to survive. Wentlandt said the suspect was "put down."

[Update 1:42 p.m.] People are believed to be trapped inside the temple, the area's city councilman said. "As far as I know, it is still an active situation," Alderman Dan Jakubczyk told CNN.

[Update 1:22 p.m.] Two men have been admitted to Froedtert hospital, a hospital spokeswoman said. One is in critical condition in the surgical intensive care unit; the other has been sent to an operating room.

[12:39 p.m.] Authorities responded to an incident at a Sikh temple in Milwaukee County on Sunday, where at least one body was seen lying in the parking lot. CNN affiliate WTMJ is reporting that multiple people may have been shot outside the temple.

WTMJ reports that the gunman may be on the loose. Aerial pictures show multiple bodies in the parking lot.

The shooting happened at about 10:40 a.m. local time, according to WTMJ.

Sikhism rose up 500 years ago in India as a monotheistic religion that rejected the caste system and scriptures of Hinduism.

What do you know about Sikhs and Hindus? And you are already jumping to conclusions as to who the Gunman is. Is it because he is one of yours? I am a Hindu and we love Sikhs as they are hard working, sincere and helpful people. Do you know why the Indian Govt went into Sikh Gurudwara? To flush out terrorists, just like Wisconsin Police had to enter now. If Indian Govt is wrong, so is Wisconsin Police.

This is truly a sad situation when even places of worship are not safe anymore. I do also want to share my disappointment with CNN. First, I can't believe the anchor called the place a "church". After the break, he was probably made aware of his ignorance that this was a temple and not a "church". Although it is the same thing (place of worship), I can't believe a CNN anchor would be this ignorant to not know the different names used by different cultures. In addition, I agree with the comments posted here that if you want to interview people who are closest to the tragedy, give them the right of free speech. I wonder how much was controlled or censured during interviews with the victims of a mass shooting else where.

May god be with the victims in this tough time and bring peace on earth to prevent these type of crimes against innocence in the future.

Sikhism is closer to the muslims than the hindus, as they share same ideology of using violence against the opponents.

Sikhism is its OWN religion and is close to NO OTHER. All they do is promote peace and equality of all people. How about you get educated and then decide to post comments? Ignorant.

Excuse me, I do not know what your sources are but they are incredibly wrong. There is no facet of Sikhism that condones violence. We are a monotheistic religion that believes in one God and equality for all. So please spare us of creating controversy over things that are not true.

using violence against your opponents has nothing to do with ideology and is in no way something that is unique to Muslims. Christians have been killing and maiming people in the name of god for a very long time now. The level of ignorance of other cultures in the US always amazes me. And no I'm not Muslim, I'm a white Canadian boy who thinks all religious doctrine is a load of crap

You are an ignorant indeed, suggest that you read about Islam before judging because not everything that your media says about Islam is right. you didn't even know anything about Islam before September 11 which proved to be a conspiracy, an event that gave America the green card to invade rhe world no questions asked. Gorge bush needed to invade iraq for oil and for personal benefits so he convinces you that it's Islam, Islam is the enemy when in reality it's capitalism.
What about jewdisim since you think you are so aware of religions, Israelis today kill Palestinians every minute every day for no reason, they stole the land and kill civilians everyday and no one dares to say anything about judisuim, why????? You are afraid to be called an anti Sami.
