Police chief: Temple shooting being treated as "a domestic terrorist-type incident"

[Update 5:16 p.m.] Oak Creek, Wisconsin, police Chief John Edwards said authorities are treating Sunday's shooting at a Sikh temple in that community as a "domestic terrorist-type incident," adding that the FBI will head the investigation. There was a service going on at the time of the shooting. Edwards was not willing to divulge any information about the shooter or the victims. No one is still inside the temple, he said.

[Update 4:52 p.m.] President Barack Obama said Sunday in a statement that "at this time, the people of Oak Creek must know that the American people have them in our thoughts and prayers" and vowed to "provide whatever support is necessary." He added, "As we mourn this loss which took place at a house of worship, we are reminded how much our country has been enriched by Sikhs, who are a part of our broader American family."

[Updates 2:45 p.m.] Greenfield police Chief Brad Wentlandt says four people were found dead inside the temple, three dead outside; one of those outside was the gunman.

[Updates 2:27 p.m.] The suspect shot by an officer was killed, authorities said.

[Update 1:57 p.m.] One officer was shot multiple times, and one suspect was also shot, Greenfield police Chief Brad Wentlandt said. The officer is expected to survive. Wentlandt said the suspect was "put down."

[Update 1:42 p.m.] People are believed to be trapped inside the temple, the area's city councilman said. "As far as I know, it is still an active situation," Alderman Dan Jakubczyk told CNN.

Who belongs to the Sikh community?

[Update 1:22 p.m.] Two men have been admitted to Froedtert hospital, a hospital spokeswoman said. One is in critical condition in the surgical intensive care unit; the other has been sent to an operating room.

[12:39 p.m.] Authorities responded to an incident at a Sikh temple in Milwaukee County on Sunday, where at least one body was seen lying in the parking lot. CNN affiliate WTMJ is reporting that multiple people may have been shot outside the temple.

WTMJ reports that the gunman may be on the loose. Aerial pictures show multiple bodies in the parking lot.

The shooting happened at about 10:40 a.m. local time, according to WTMJ.

Sikhism rose up 500 years ago in India as a monotheistic religion that rejected the caste system and scriptures of Hinduism.

I heard from one Sikh as saying that christians, Muslims, judiasm is more closer to us then hindus as because Hindus are idol worshippers but Sikh aren't. Second he told me about the atrocities commit in India against them due to which they shift to other countries like USA, Canada, And UK. He also told me that no religion in the world is more threatening as Hindus because they are allowed to kill people who do not believe in idol worshipping. From the comments, I m seeing many Hindus are now trying to find similarities...

My heart goes out to all that were injured or killedin Wisconsin, however, this is yet another reason that I am so against organized religion. The longest and deadliest wars (most wars) that have been fought on this planet have been over RELIGION !!!! Religion has always been about CONTROL, TORTURE, HARASSMENT, SLAVE LABOR, DEGRADING, DEMEANING, HIDING WEALTH and CORRUPTIO;; don't believe me ??? Then just re-read your history books !!! Even Jesus Christ, himself, was killed because of HIS religious beliefs !!!! If organized religion is allowed to continue on this road of self righteousness and judgmental bigotry, then we should expect this SHOOTING problem to continue on a regular basis and then turn into an everyday occurrence !!!! Since today's news media, television and the Internet tells the world about each religion's beliefs, those who do not believe that way, get mad, go crazy and commit murderous acts like these !!! History is FULL of violent acts all because of RELIGION !!! When will religiousnpeople learn to BEHAVE THEMSELVES, MIND THEIR OWN BUSINESS and WORSHIP WHO OR WHATEVER IN PRIVATE, (keeping their ideas of religion to themselves and for their followers only) so that everyone can worship and believe (or not believe) the way that they want to and have a right to ????? If everyone would MIND THEIR OWN BUSINESS, we would not have wars and shootings like this !!!! Now I understand what John Lennon meant , in his song "Imagine", when he spoke of "NO RELIGION TOO" and how wonderful that would be !!!! WHEN RELIGIONS LEARN TO MIND THEIR OWN BUSINESS, these problems will stop !!! TennesseeEd

  4. Say it As You See It

It is strange that Sikhs and Hindus are trying to find similarities. Trying to be Indians. They may try to fool the Americans but not others who know them well. Folks, Sikhs and Hinduism are like oil and vinegar. They have been at each others throats for centuries. In fact, Sikhs have been wanting a separate nation for themselves as they are oppressed in India. Marginalised.

Quiet misleading. Pakistan has been using a small minority of Sikhs to create trouble in India. Members of LeT, a Muslim terrorist organization wearing Indian army unifrom killed 35 Sikhs at point blank range before President Clintons visit to India. This was done to cause a split between Sikhs and Indian army. Pakis also kill Indian Muslims and hindus to divide Muslims and Hindus. On 26/11 Bombay terrorist attacks, 10 Paki terrorists killed 40 (INDIAN MUSLIMS) and 135 non-Muslims (including 6 Americans). Indian Muslims refused to bury dead paki terrorists on Indian soil. tried to Say as I see it

WELL, HERE WE GO AGAIN! Another tragedy and more posts that ONLY show the ignorance of those making them! Racism, hate, uneducated, misguided, mislead, manipulators of truth, and on and on! Isn't it wonderful to see how much WE, as a people, have IMPROVED, over the ages! YES, my prayers & thoughts for those involved, ESPECIALLY, for the police officer, in critical condition, who KILLED this "thing" Let's WAIT and see what this "things" story turns out to be.

First of all, very sad to hear this tragic news, my prayers goes out to all those involved. Secondly, would like to praise the emergency services for potentially saving further lives. However its evident that the states still need to get grips of different faiths within the Asian community. As a british Sikh, i can only admire the UK for being diverse in this area. However please lets focus on the victims and their families on this occasion rather than getting drawn ignorant and stupid remarks about ones faith.

Ironic how this is a "Domestic Terrorist-Type incident" yet the Ft Hood shooting was not. Oh thats right, Major Hassan was a Muslim and it wouldnt be politically correct to call him what he is..a terrorist. It also would take away Obama's the ability to claim there hasnt been any acts of terrorism on our soil since he became POTUS. It also serves as an opportunity for those on the left along with liberal media outlets like CNN (propaganda mills) to further their agenda of destroying the 2nd Amendment. The hypocrisy displayed by those on the left never cease to amaze me.

racists like you 82 Airbone(yeah I too was at Ft Bragg NC,went to Pope AFB and did my eight jumps with the old T-10 chute) are allways trying to show your fake so call patriotism by justifying another right wing sick minded tea partyer. Types like you will hopefully be dwindled down to the nothingness that you belong too!

@ S kel. Nothing racist was in my original post. Everything in it was simply fact. You claim you went to Pope AFB and "did your eight jumps"? You werent 82nd very long then. I was simply pointing out the hypocrisy constantly displayed by those on the left, sorry if that hurts your liberal pride. Ill say it again, it's Ironic how the Ft Hood shooter was refered to as everything BUT a domestic terrorist incident yet this shooter was immediately labeled a terrorist. The guy was a deranged misguided active shooter, but not a terrorist. Terrorist attempt to exact political change through violence or fear often based on religious beliefs. But hey, dont lets facts stand in the way of your misguided and uninformed rants.

And why is the shooting in colorado bring taken as domestic terrorism, oh ya because the powers that be are using that as anti 2nd amendment rights platform as well. gun control is not the issue here folks, the issue is curbing hate and intorerance, something that is also counter to what the ruling elite want

American 'numpties' cannot even get their terrorism targets right can they. Sikhs are a different Asian sect to the madmen behind '911', but to most US citizens, could they even identify Asia? even if handed a map or globe? Even CNN thinks that "Middle East" is in a different place than "Asia".
