Police chief: Temple shooting being treated as "a domestic terrorist-type incident"

[Update 5:16 p.m.] Oak Creek, Wisconsin, police Chief John Edwards said authorities are treating Sunday's shooting at a Sikh temple in that community as a "domestic terrorist-type incident," adding that the FBI will head the investigation. There was a service going on at the time of the shooting. Edwards was not willing to divulge any information about the shooter or the victims. No one is still inside the temple, he said.

[Update 4:52 p.m.] President Barack Obama said Sunday in a statement that "at this time, the people of Oak Creek must know that the American people have them in our thoughts and prayers" and vowed to "provide whatever support is necessary." He added, "As we mourn this loss which took place at a house of worship, we are reminded how much our country has been enriched by Sikhs, who are a part of our broader American family."

[Updates 2:45 p.m.] Greenfield police Chief Brad Wentlandt says four people were found dead inside the temple, three dead outside; one of those outside was the gunman.

[Updates 2:27 p.m.] The suspect shot by an officer was killed, authorities said.

[Update 1:57 p.m.] One officer was shot multiple times, and one suspect was also shot, Greenfield police Chief Brad Wentlandt said. The officer is expected to survive. Wentlandt said the suspect was "put down."

[Update 1:42 p.m.] People are believed to be trapped inside the temple, the area's city councilman said. "As far as I know, it is still an active situation," Alderman Dan Jakubczyk told CNN.

The shooting happened at about 10:40 a.m. local time, according to WTMJ.

Is it a wonder why this country is in trouble, which in my view CNN itself is contributor to that end, by focusing so much on crime and violence. Yes, it is deplorable what is happening. Authorities are taking care of it. You can give small segments from time to time, if you must.

It is too bad that you are preempting a worthy program. Specially one that educates

look, at then end of the day, Guns are not the problem. relaxed gun laws are. I own and gun and live is a state where getting a gun is next to impossible (MA), and im glad for that. but, people will get a gun one way or another, you cant fault all of the law abiding, sane armed citizens for act of a nut job.

You know it's some STUPID White person!

If you ban white people from having guns this type of crime would cease to exist. Sure you may have the minorities killing each other but at least those involved know each other and it isn't innocent people being slaughtered.

LD, you're absolutely right! I can't remember the last time some black, uneducated, wanna be gangster shot up some innocent people! Has that even ever happened????

    • Really

Yes, you idiot, it has happened. If you think innocent people, babies, etc. haven't been caught in the crossfire of two gang members beef, you are very uninformed. Yes, mass shootings seem to involve whites more and gang/inner city crime associates with blacks and latinos. That doesn't mean a black person hasn't been involved in a workplace shooting because it certainly has happened before. Doesn't matter it it's a mass shooting or street crime, INNOCENT people can always be victims.

THE REPUTATION of CNN sinks even lower in my estimation. I tune in to Fareed every week, because he has insight
good guests etc. You've preempted his program for a shooting? that happened 2 hours ago in a Sikkh temple that
perhaps wounded some people, your "reader" has no idea what the religion is, you know NOTHING about the event.
Ordinarily one might break in to Fareed IF you had news. I note AD time continues. WHAT IRRESPONSIBILITY!!

Actually they don't need computers and internet connections to be idiots; but those things help them spew their hatred anonymously as they don't really have the courage of their convictions.

    1. gun control would not fix this – if a criminal wants a gun bad enough do you think they will buy it the legal way? duh NO.
    2. it is not just Muslims that kill people – not all are bad people – criminals come in all shapes and sizes and colors
    3. personally I believe that it is not insecurity but criminally and mentally ill people who kill
also it is not only in America

I'm not sure who put the article together, but it took me a moment or two to determine that Milwaukee County was indeed in Wisconsin. That wasn't clarified, and who knows....there could be a Milwaukee County in other states. You never know. Just a small oversight in a sad story.
