Police: Moviegoer accidentally shoots himself in the rear

A man carried a gun into a movie theater and accidentally shot himself with it, police in Sparks, Nevada, say.

According to an incident report, police received several calls Tuesday night reporting shots being fired inside the Sparks Century Theater downtown, where "The Bourne Legacy" was playing. Multiple police units and other emergency personnel rushed to the theater, but officers quickly determined that only one shot had been fired.

Witnesses told police the man's gun had gone off when he adjusted his position in his seat. They said he quickly got up, apologized to other patrons sitting near him and left the theater before police arrived.

Officers later found the man at the Veterans Affairs hospital in Reno with a gunshot wound to his buttocks. He told them his gun - for which he had a valid concealed-carry permit - fell out of his pocket and discharged when it hit the floor.

There was no panic in the auditorium, CNN affiliate KRNV reported. Police said only five people out of the 30 in the theater even heard the gun go off.

The 56-year-old Sparks resident, whom police did not name, cooperated with investigators, said police, who added he may be charged later with illegally discharging a firearm.

On July 20, a man opened fire inside a crowded movie theater in Aurora, Colorado, killing 12 and wounding 58 during a midnight screening of "The Dark Knight Rises." Former graduate student James Holmes, 24, faces charges in that case.

In a suburb of Cleveland, another man was arrested on August 4 after allegedly carrying weapons into a screening of "The Dark Knight Rises" there. An attorney for Scott A. Smith said his client was carrying the weapons for self-protection.

Just imagine if this idiot had been in that theater during the Dark Knight. But somehow we're all safer with more guns.

How about banning NAACP, ACLU and the USA? Would you like that? You are a confused imbecile. This is free country like no other and the guns are part of it. Like it or not. What the "H" NRA had to do with this? Quit sticking you toxic tongue out before you accidentally poison yourself

So you can get a permit to carry a concealed weapon even if you're enough of a klutz to do this? What if that bullet had hit someone?

Where was Dick Cheney when this happened? That's what the investigators need to find out.

I couldn't of done what that guy did. My backside would of been laying out on the other side of the aisle. I don't think they'd want anything with a 29 inch barrel comming into there anyways.

That's why guns need to be BANNED in America. Because it's not banned, things like Colorado shootings and this dumb incident will probably happen again. Guns have NO purpose whatsoever! Trust me

Yea, disarm all of America so criminals could just have an easier time. Hell why do we even need police officers? All people are good, and will always do the right thing.

So what would have happened if he did "accidentally" shoot someone? A slap on the wrist? So many people would justify this mans right to bring a loaded weapon (Safety off, and not properly holstered) into a theater. I wont. I go to the gun range, just about every week, I believe every American has the right to own guns. But I also know TOO many Americans are just TOO stupid to own guns.

Lots of people say if someone else had a gun in the theater in Colorado not as many people would have been killed. But they fail to consider the gas the shooter used as well as the body armor he was wearing. The gas was so bad police who first responded couldn't even get into the theater to get to many of the victims.

We are supposed to believe people like this guy, who can't even keep his weapon properly holstered and secured, will be effective against a heavily armored man across a dark theater filled with gas.

So this guy with a permit carried the gun in his pocket instead of some kind of holster, dropped it out on the floor, it somehow hit the safety against something turning it off, and then discharged while aimed directly at his rear end? Lemony Snickett wouldn't even buy that story.

Do you even own a firearm? It is totally plausible to shoot yourself in the rear. You'd be a moron to do so...but it's possible.
