Police: Moviegoer accidentally shoots himself in the rear

A man carried a gun into a movie theater and accidentally shot himself with it, police in Sparks, Nevada, say.

According to an incident report, police received several calls Tuesday night reporting shots being fired inside the Sparks Century Theater downtown, where "The Bourne Legacy" was playing. Multiple police units and other emergency personnel rushed to the theater, but officers quickly determined that only one shot had been fired.

Witnesses told police the man's gun had gone off when he adjusted his position in his seat. They said he quickly got up, apologized to other patrons sitting near him and left the theater before police arrived.

Officers later found the man at the Veterans Affairs hospital in Reno with a gunshot wound to his buttocks. He told them his gun - for which he had a valid concealed-carry permit - fell out of his pocket and discharged when it hit the floor.

There was no panic in the auditorium, CNN affiliate KRNV reported. Police said only five people out of the 30 in the theater even heard the gun go off.

The 56-year-old Sparks resident, whom police did not name, cooperated with investigators, said police, who added he may be charged later with illegally discharging a firearm.

On July 20, a man opened fire inside a crowded movie theater in Aurora, Colorado, killing 12 and wounding 58 during a midnight screening of "The Dark Knight Rises." Former graduate student James Holmes, 24, faces charges in that case.

In a suburb of Cleveland, another man was arrested on August 4 after allegedly carrying weapons into a screening of "The Dark Knight Rises" there. An attorney for Scott A. Smith said his client was carrying the weapons for self-protection.

he may be charged later with illegally discharging a firearm???? That's a rather stupid BS law you can come up with. You give a guy a permit to carry a gun secretly and you are charging him when the gun goes off accidentally. It is as simple as carrying a coin. It may fall and a head turns up or a tail or none when it lands on its edge in a crack. I don't own a gun and I'm not a gun guy but I'm a fervent admirer of probability. There are many stupid police driving on the wrong side of the road to get to somewhere or somebody. They speed all the time for no apparent reason. When the police drive fast and carelessly, their cars are as capable of killing a person as any other normal car. Remember police have so many things that distract their attention, e.g. a flat screen monitor in their car.

If that guns shot another moviegoer in the face, you'll think it's no big deal too. Just an innocent accident.

Except that someone could have been KILLED because the doofus didn't have the safety on! If you are going to own a gun, you need to respect your weapon...or you could end up dead or in jail for negligent homicide.

A gun is not a coin. A gun can kill people. I think a person should be responsible for the discharge of their gun, even if it's an accident, because that accident could kill someone.

This perfectly illustrates why you should NEVER issue some mindless Bubba a carry permit. If you are too stupid to handle a firearm safely, you shouldn't have one.

They're some of the worst drivers on the road. Usually worse than drunks.

How exactly is charging him with illegally discharging his weapon stupid? He put every other person in that theater at risk by not properly handling his firearm. If you want to conceal carry, you should be held accountable for what happens with your firearm. There should be no way your handgun falls out of your pocket and fires.

Won't be long before somebody's concealed weapon shoots an innocent bystander in the face.

This is pretty serious I think. Good thing it didn't hit someone else but what if it hits someone else like an innocent child.

Ahhh, the only "liberal" interpretation a conservative can make is when it comes to the 2nd Amendment. Well, can't wait till every overweight Fox-brainwashed American recklessly carries around a gun like they drive 70 MPG through slick rainy roads. Now everybody needs a gun just to defend against the idiots who have a gun, and on and on it multiplies.

If he gets charged with discharging a gun then he won't be a law-abiding citizen anymore, so take his gun away. How many other people had guns in that theater? I'm never going in a theater again thanks to him and lots of others like him.

Don't most of you see how ridiculous it is to allow untrained civilians to own and carry handguns? And assault weapons?

It seems most people that want to ban guns are just really ignorant about them and stuck inside some type of bubble. Get real people...Guns are here and they are not going anywhere. Criminals don't follow the law. Get yourself a gun and the proper training. Don't rely on the good nature of the criminal to spare your life.

True. Yes, it is all fine but they need to be respected. Proper training. You need to get out and shoot. Plus, it is fun:)

I haven't had such a good belly laugh in weeks. Thank you, Mr. Unidentified Idiot. There are people who take gun ownership seriously, maintaining the requisite skills to be carrying a weapon out and about. They also possess a brain and common sense. Unfortunately, there's that other 90% of gun owners. They scare the crap out of me.
