Police: Moviegoer accidentally shoots himself in the rear

A man carried a gun into a movie theater and accidentally shot himself with it, police in Sparks, Nevada, say.

According to an incident report, police received several calls Tuesday night reporting shots being fired inside the Sparks Century Theater downtown, where "The Bourne Legacy" was playing. Multiple police units and other emergency personnel rushed to the theater, but officers quickly determined that only one shot had been fired.

Witnesses told police the man's gun had gone off when he adjusted his position in his seat. They said he quickly got up, apologized to other patrons sitting near him and left the theater before police arrived.

Officers later found the man at the Veterans Affairs hospital in Reno with a gunshot wound to his buttocks. He told them his gun - for which he had a valid concealed-carry permit - fell out of his pocket and discharged when it hit the floor.

There was no panic in the auditorium, CNN affiliate KRNV reported. Police said only five people out of the 30 in the theater even heard the gun go off.

The 56-year-old Sparks resident, whom police did not name, cooperated with investigators, said police, who added he may be charged later with illegally discharging a firearm.

On July 20, a man opened fire inside a crowded movie theater in Aurora, Colorado, killing 12 and wounding 58 during a midnight screening of "The Dark Knight Rises." Former graduate student James Holmes, 24, faces charges in that case.

In a suburb of Cleveland, another man was arrested on August 4 after allegedly carrying weapons into a screening of "The Dark Knight Rises" there. An attorney for Scott A. Smith said his client was carrying the weapons for self-protection.

What makes this guy stupid is carrying a gun in his pocket (from what the story says) instead of in a decent holster. If he was carrying it correctly it never would have accidentally went off.

Ok, before you guys start whining for more gun control, consider first that most people who have a CCW handle their weapons a lot better that this idiot. He shot himself because he was stupid.

We do not trust any of you hicks. That is the problem. You are a bunch of childish losers who are so cowardly that you need a gun. You are no warrior. You are babies.

Actually.... he got shot because HE lost his gun control! Ya see.... that's what Madison, Jefferson, Washington, and all the rest of those old fashioned guys were referring to: government control of ANYTHING is bad... WE, as individuals, MUST be in control of everything! NOT government....

30000 people killed by firearms annually in US. Three times as many wounded, this is not even news except for the theater link.

He is gd lucky it hit HIM and not some innocent person seated in front of him. Good god, if you're going to carry, at least make sure it's secured in a holster or something! Carrying a loaded gun in such a way that it can easily fall and go off isn't very smart.

Wait a minute. Never mind whether or not it is legal to carry in a theater, but you have a permit and your gun falls out of your pocked and ACCIDENTLY discharges (and shoots you in the butt) and YOU get charged with "illegal discharge of a firearm??? Come on law enforcement. You can do better than that. How about charging for littering for dripping blood on the sidewalk. Sheesh.

Guns have safeties. Idiots who have emotional issues and have to carry their guns in public like macho men don't have safeties.

One thing though, if you guys are going to start carry guns in theaters, don't "overreact" now if you go see a movie in IMAX 3D and a scene "seems" real. Remember from back in the day "it's only a movie, only a movie". Just sayin.

Given this story, I suggest we let more untrained careless morons obtain guns and carry them around in public.
