Dismembered remains in Toronto from woman, 41, police say

[Updated at 12:36 p.m. ET] The body parts found in two Toronto area waterways in the past week belong to Guang Hua Liu, a 41-year-old woman from Toronto, police said Tuesday.

Liu was last seen on Friday, August 10, Peel Regional Police Inspector George Koekkoek said, according to a report from CNN affiliate CTV.

Liu was a Canadian citizen of Chinese descent who once owned a spa in Toronto, according to CTV.

Police have no suspects in the case, Koekkoek said, according to a report from the Toronto Star.

She had three children, one now an adult and two others who live with their father, CTV cited Koekkoek as saying.

[Posted at 10:08 a.m. ET] Police in the Toronto area were executing search warrants in the case of body parts found in two waterways in the past week, according to local news reports on Tuesday.

The parts - a head and foot found in the Credit River in Mississauga last Wednesday and Thursday, and an arm, two calves and a thigh found in West Highlands Creek in Toronto over the weekend - are likely from the same person, police said, according to a report in the Toronto Star. The two sites are about 60 kilometers (37 miles) apart.

"We have a female victim who unfortunately we’ve been able to find portions of her body in two jurisdictions," Peel Regional Police Sgt. Pete Brandwood said Monday, according to a report from CNN affiliate CBC.

He said there are "obvious similarities between the discovery of those body parts in Toronto and the recent discovery of our body parts here in Peel," the CBC reported.

The parts found on the weekend were in two different places in West Highlands Creek, according to the reports.

Cameron James came across the first set of remains Saturday while searching for golf balls, according to the Toronto Star.

"I came across a pungent smell. Upon further investigation it looked life a loaf of ham, and then I looked closer - it's not a ham, it's not a cow, it looked like a human calf," James said in an interview with the CBC.

A Toronto Star reporter discovered the second set of remains in the creek on Sunday when he nearly tripped over a garbage bag floating in the creek.

"Somebody's been chopped up, put in this bag and thrown in the river - and that's pretty sick," the reporter, Dale Brazao, said in an interview with the CBC.

Last Wednesday and Thursday, a head and a foot were found about a kilometer (0.6 mile) apart along the Credit River, which runs near Hewick Meadows Park in Mississauga, a city of 700,000 west of Toronto and not far from Lake Ontario.

Police said Monday they are closer to identifying the victim, according to the news reports.  The Toronto Sun, citing an unnamed police source, said the remains may be linked to a missing Scarborough woman. Scarborough is the Toronto neighborhood where the remains were found over the weekend.

Peel Regional Police Constable Fiona Thivierge said police are being methodical in the investigation.

"It’s just a question of trying to be as patient as possible and allow the evidence to take us where it needs to go in order to get answers to this puzzling situation," the CBC quoted her as saying.

Once the victim is identified, police can then look for a suspect, Thivierge told the Star.

“In order to have a suspect they’d need to know who the victim is,” she told the Star.

The case is the second involving body parts to make big headlines in Canada this year.

In May, police found a human torso in a trash bin outside a Montreal apartment. The victim's hand and foot were mailed to the headquarters of Canada's two main political parties in Ottawa.

Luka Rocco Magnotta, a 29-year-old porn actor, was arrested and charged with first-degree murder in that case in June. He pleaded not guilty.

Body parts linked to the Magnotta case were also mailed to schools in British Columbia, according to authorities.

Obomba doing damage control, claiming he did not approve the ad that said Romney had something to do with a ladies death. Bla bla bla. This guy actually expects me to believe this. Whatever...

I'd attribute this to a failure of the education system – even the mafia can be taught that you gotta weigh down the body parts before throwing them in a river. Amateurs....

Look for a fisherman that practices chumming. Or one that may have been trying to sell supplies to bait shops and got turned down.

I'm not a homicide detective. At first glance, I'd say they are not dealing with an animal (not human), because animals don't go to the local grocery store for trash bags. And if it was a case where they were dealing with a bonifide cannibal just trying to survive, why would they take the time putting remains in a bag and tossing it in a creek or a river? This perp is "on the move" and wants to "get caught". They delibratly throw remains in a flow so they will be found. And that is the perps calling card. Unless the law can't I.D. the victims, this perp is going to be difficult to catch. If they don't find prints, whoever it is, is going out of thier way to leave no evidence.
