Dismembered remains in Toronto from woman, 41, police say

[Updated at 12:36 p.m. ET] The body parts found in two Toronto area waterways in the past week belong to Guang Hua Liu, a 41-year-old woman from Toronto, police said Tuesday.

Liu was last seen on Friday, August 10, Peel Regional Police Inspector George Koekkoek said, according to a report from CNN affiliate CTV.

Liu was a Canadian citizen of Chinese descent who once owned a spa in Toronto, according to CTV.

Police have no suspects in the case, Koekkoek said, according to a report from the Toronto Star.

She had three children, one now an adult and two others who live with their father, CTV cited Koekkoek as saying.

[Posted at 10:08 a.m. ET] Police in the Toronto area were executing search warrants in the case of body parts found in two waterways in the past week, according to local news reports on Tuesday.

The parts - a head and foot found in the Credit River in Mississauga last Wednesday and Thursday, and an arm, two calves and a thigh found in West Highlands Creek in Toronto over the weekend - are likely from the same person, police said, according to a report in the Toronto Star. The two sites are about 60 kilometers (37 miles) apart.

"We have a female victim who unfortunately we’ve been able to find portions of her body in two jurisdictions," Peel Regional Police Sgt. Pete Brandwood said Monday, according to a report from CNN affiliate CBC.

He said there are "obvious similarities between the discovery of those body parts in Toronto and the recent discovery of our body parts here in Peel," the CBC reported.

The parts found on the weekend were in two different places in West Highlands Creek, according to the reports.

Cameron James came across the first set of remains Saturday while searching for golf balls, according to the Toronto Star.

"I came across a pungent smell. Upon further investigation it looked life a loaf of ham, and then I looked closer - it's not a ham, it's not a cow, it looked like a human calf," James said in an interview with the CBC.

A Toronto Star reporter discovered the second set of remains in the creek on Sunday when he nearly tripped over a garbage bag floating in the creek.

"Somebody's been chopped up, put in this bag and thrown in the river - and that's pretty sick," the reporter, Dale Brazao, said in an interview with the CBC.

Last Wednesday and Thursday, a head and a foot were found about a kilometer (0.6 mile) apart along the Credit River, which runs near Hewick Meadows Park in Mississauga, a city of 700,000 west of Toronto and not far from Lake Ontario.

Police said Monday they are closer to identifying the victim, according to the news reports.  The Toronto Sun, citing an unnamed police source, said the remains may be linked to a missing Scarborough woman. Scarborough is the Toronto neighborhood where the remains were found over the weekend.

Peel Regional Police Constable Fiona Thivierge said police are being methodical in the investigation.

"It’s just a question of trying to be as patient as possible and allow the evidence to take us where it needs to go in order to get answers to this puzzling situation," the CBC quoted her as saying.

Once the victim is identified, police can then look for a suspect, Thivierge told the Star.

“In order to have a suspect they’d need to know who the victim is,” she told the Star.

The case is the second involving body parts to make big headlines in Canada this year.

In May, police found a human torso in a trash bin outside a Montreal apartment. The victim's hand and foot were mailed to the headquarters of Canada's two main political parties in Ottawa.

Luka Rocco Magnotta, a 29-year-old porn actor, was arrested and charged with first-degree murder in that case in June. He pleaded not guilty.

Body parts linked to the Magnotta case were also mailed to schools in British Columbia, according to authorities.

Agreed. It is sad that people will use a time like this to try to score some lame comedic points. I am a big fan of the first amendment, but I do not think that this means that all news stories have to be open for comment.

Some things are President Obama's fault. Even just his honest mistakes. Why is it you think he has done nothing wrong?

  8. Huh?

I think every new organization that exists needs to shut these sites down. They are breeding grounds for filth and vulgar ideas conjured by some really nasty people. Thus I sign off and walk away.

Totally agree. For the most part, I stopped reading the comments for the same reason (and yes, I did read a few of these). I believe other news sites have shut down their comments sections for presumably the same reason. In the past (LONG past) there used to some good comments, but now it's mainly kids (or idiots)

A naturalized citizen? I doubt it. If you want to ramble on about taxes, I would strongly suggest reading about 10,000 pages of the U.S. Tax Code, before you come back here.

Why are we focusing on this instead of the economy? I bet the democrats had a hand in this. Trying to shift blame away from Obama.

Really horrifying anyone could murder and then dismember somebody like they'd casually dice up a potato. That must be some kind of overwhelming hate and rage writhing within him to do such a heinous crime. Mygawd! What kind of monsters walk among the rest of us? Whatever this woman did, she certainly didn't deserve that kind of awful fate! May she be at peace.

Might not be hate at all. Might just be all in his/her head. Slim that it would be a female killer but it's been known to happen. I had a patient once who drank oil and swallowed a box of bullets in hopes it would make her go faster.
