Dismembered remains in Toronto from woman, 41, police say

[Updated at 12:36 p.m. ET] The body parts found in two Toronto area waterways in the past week belong to Guang Hua Liu, a 41-year-old woman from Toronto, police said Tuesday.

Liu was last seen on Friday, August 10, Peel Regional Police Inspector George Koekkoek said, according to a report from CNN affiliate CTV.

Liu was a Canadian citizen of Chinese descent who once owned a spa in Toronto, according to CTV.

Police have no suspects in the case, Koekkoek said, according to a report from the Toronto Star.

She had three children, one now an adult and two others who live with their father, CTV cited Koekkoek as saying.

[Posted at 10:08 a.m. ET] Police in the Toronto area were executing search warrants in the case of body parts found in two waterways in the past week, according to local news reports on Tuesday.

The parts - a head and foot found in the Credit River in Mississauga last Wednesday and Thursday, and an arm, two calves and a thigh found in West Highlands Creek in Toronto over the weekend - are likely from the same person, police said, according to a report in the Toronto Star. The two sites are about 60 kilometers (37 miles) apart.

"We have a female victim who unfortunately we’ve been able to find portions of her body in two jurisdictions," Peel Regional Police Sgt. Pete Brandwood said Monday, according to a report from CNN affiliate CBC.

He said there are "obvious similarities between the discovery of those body parts in Toronto and the recent discovery of our body parts here in Peel," the CBC reported.

The parts found on the weekend were in two different places in West Highlands Creek, according to the reports.

Cameron James came across the first set of remains Saturday while searching for golf balls, according to the Toronto Star.

"I came across a pungent smell. Upon further investigation it looked life a loaf of ham, and then I looked closer - it's not a ham, it's not a cow, it looked like a human calf," James said in an interview with the CBC.

A Toronto Star reporter discovered the second set of remains in the creek on Sunday when he nearly tripped over a garbage bag floating in the creek.

"Somebody's been chopped up, put in this bag and thrown in the river - and that's pretty sick," the reporter, Dale Brazao, said in an interview with the CBC.

Last Wednesday and Thursday, a head and a foot were found about a kilometer (0.6 mile) apart along the Credit River, which runs near Hewick Meadows Park in Mississauga, a city of 700,000 west of Toronto and not far from Lake Ontario.

Police said Monday they are closer to identifying the victim, according to the news reports.  The Toronto Sun, citing an unnamed police source, said the remains may be linked to a missing Scarborough woman. Scarborough is the Toronto neighborhood where the remains were found over the weekend.

Peel Regional Police Constable Fiona Thivierge said police are being methodical in the investigation.

"It’s just a question of trying to be as patient as possible and allow the evidence to take us where it needs to go in order to get answers to this puzzling situation," the CBC quoted her as saying.

Once the victim is identified, police can then look for a suspect, Thivierge told the Star.

“In order to have a suspect they’d need to know who the victim is,” she told the Star.

The case is the second involving body parts to make big headlines in Canada this year.

In May, police found a human torso in a trash bin outside a Montreal apartment. The victim's hand and foot were mailed to the headquarters of Canada's two main political parties in Ottawa.

Luka Rocco Magnotta, a 29-year-old porn actor, was arrested and charged with first-degree murder in that case in June. He pleaded not guilty.

Body parts linked to the Magnotta case were also mailed to schools in British Columbia, according to authorities.

Some sicko saw the huge international publicity generated by Magnotta, and decided s/he wanted some of that publicity.

Either that, or an inept killer trying to hide traces of a murder, and not doing an effective cover-up.

Before it was said they were not sure it was a homicide? Why would someone want to be chopped up? Duh

It reminds me of this Newfie (someone from Newfoundland) they had discovered a Person, dead, tied up, with gunshot wounds, stuff in a duffle bag and thrown into the atlantic. and this newfie is like; "it's pretty scary ya know eh, cuz ya know, it could've been a homicide!" lol, no sheet

We are not a "State" – we are a country. Unfortunately, this kind of thing happens more often than people think. When Magnotta was captured police stations from all over the U.S. were contacting the Montreal police because it resembled dismemberment cases in their states.....

Toronto is a pretty safe place still. As an example, we had 49 gun-related homicides last year in Toronto. That's the total for a couple weekends in a major US city. Now we have a couple crazy people who like to dismember. Hopefully the video isn't online for this one!

I know this article is very sad, but didn't anyone else find this a poor choice of words funny?

A human calf? Is that like a man-cow? Or a man-bear-pig, half man, half bear, half pig.

think about it. the last thing he's expecting to find are human remains on the golf course. it's difficult for the human brain to fathom and process body parts right there in broad daylight. you are hoping against hope that it's some other creature, not human. i found a dead body once. he had been dead and inside his apartment for four days. it is horrifying and the stench is unreal. so give the guy a break. those of you laughing laugh because of the shock factor or whatever particular mood you're in. it's okay but after that you gotta pause and say a little prayer or something.

Mockingjay, this has nothing to do with this poor woman being dismembered, and you need to show a little respect for this woman. If your mother WAS killed, would you want this posted on a thread just because you hate the prez? Good Lord, child!!

I agree. The president isn't that bad. People should be more accepting and accept his greatness. Also everyone needs to realize that he is smart and awesome and good. Those that disagree with this are obviously just not too smart.

Luka Magnotta has ties to the Mafia, no doubt. With a name like Magnotta?!...definitely. When is Magnotta getting the Guillotine/Chair/Firing Squad/Lethal Injection?? Give him ALL of them at the same time, he deserves it, so badly.

Wow – the comments on here are so crude and unfeeling it's just sad. Just goes to show we are way too desensitized to this stuff.

She was a human being and her children or mother could be reading this. Show some respect and compassion.

This story reminds me of when a boy drowned in my hometown's reservoir back in the late 1960s. The entire reservoir was drained and it took two days to find his dead body. During the course of the search several dozen other drowned bodies were found. All of them fetuses and newborns drowned by someone.
We always cry for the victims. But what happened to the perps that would give them the idea to dismember a human or drown a fetus/newborn? Something terrible, for sure.
