Packed SUV flips, killing 5 children on way to Texas water park

Five children, ages 2 to 13, died when an SUV they were riding in blew a tire and crashed on a Texas highway, police said.

A dozen people were packed into the 2003 GMC Envoy on Monday, on the way to a family outing at Splash Kingdom water park in Canton, Texas, according to Trooper Jean Dark of the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Driver Federico Acuna lost control when the right rear tire exploded on Interstate 20 just outside Canton in Van Zandt County on Monday afternoon, Dark said. Acuna apparently overcorrected and the vehicle flipped, she said.

None of the children who died was wearing a seat belt, Dark said.

    Condolences.
    Losing a child is awful.

Obviously there aren't a dozen seatbelts in an SUV. And if this were an accident involving a school bus, no mention of seatbelts would be made.
I lived in Texas many years, and travelled that sate extensively drilling for oil. It is a common everyday sight in Texas to see vehicles packed with people...even entire families packed in the back of a pickup truck with naked lady mudflaps.

@ melvinslizard, My sister has lived in Texas for over 25 yrs and she has seen illegals packed into flatbeds and pick-ups countless times... Just because it's law doesn't mean it's enforced.

There is no god. Your president only pretends to be a follower of Christ to get your vote. Give it up.

Totally inappropriate. A little more thought as to this tragedy.

There are no words that I can express to the families of the children who died in this terrible accident that will make them feel better. What I can do and have done is pray for th children who died & their families, asking the Lord to help them through this tragedy and lessen the horrendous grief they will have to endure. There is nothing worse than burying your child. Authored by a mother & her family who continues to grieve after 12 years.

Obviously there is a reason that a vehicle that holds 6 people should not have that many people crammed into it. My sympathy to all.

It would also help for people to learn that suvs, trucks and vans don't drive like cars. Remember when firestone got sued? It wasn't firestone's fault people were flipping theor suvs even though they still to this day make crappy tires.

People of the United States of America,
The parents screwed up for not making sure the children were seat belted in!

It is also illegal to work in Texas id you are an illegal bordercrosser. And it is also illegal to hire an illegal alien. But just as it is illegal to pack your truck with people in Texas, Texan's do by-and-large employ illegal workers. They're everywhere. Just like California. Goto any shopping center in the morning and dozens of illegals are lined-up to goto work for the illegal employer as local police look the other way.

The schoolbus driver messed up by not making sure all of the students were buckled in.
Not that there were 12 seatbelts in this crashed SUV.
Imagine the trouble a schoolbus driver would have making your kids buckle their seatbelts. (after just seeiing how helpless the busdriver AND fat old lady bus monitor had with your kids making fun of that largeness all flabby and stuff, like kids do)
LOL. I bet half your kids would tell the bus driver off and you would be upset that the driver was telling yer kid what to do! EXACTLY backwards of America before drugs.

Mr. and Mrs. Red Garner used to each drive a schoolbus up and down treacherous icy roads of The Colorado National Monument. Both Red and Thelma knew those windy roads like the backs of their hands. And they did this for free, and for nearly 20 years they did this for free. And then you took their paddles away from them and they had no more authority over the meaner of your kids, and so quit.
Now, parents drive their own kids up and down those roads to and from school. Each and every single year one of them gets in an accident.
Red has since passed away, and Thelma is in her 80s. When your kids began being allowed to disrespect fine Americans such as these without fear of having the snot beat out of them with a paddle, was not long after drugs became widely available. America's mind HAS been altered by drugs.

Its heart rending. A family outing and tragedy strikes. My prayers and thoughts with the family.Let us hope this serves as a lesson to folks who are not mindful of how they treat their vehicle.
