Comments: Time for another Civil War? Or not? Readers debate disagreement

Editor's note: We're listening to you. Every day, we spot thought-provoking comments from readers. Here's some comments we noticed today.

The Civil War we read about in U.S. history books took place in the 1860s, but even today people are talking about the possibility of it happening again. A Lubbock County, Texas, judge named Tom Head stirred up controversy when he said the United States would enter such a civil war if Obama were re-elected. Texas Democrats are calling for his resignation. The story got more than 17,000 comments about political boundaries, and about what it means to disagree and fight.

Texas Democrats: Judge who said Obama could trigger civil war should resign

Does it matter who is president? (Putting aside views about what constitutes a "good president" for a moment.)

Picturamadoj: "If we didn't have a Civil War when Bush was in office, why would anyone think we'd have a Civil War with a good president like Obama?"

bhartman36: "We had a civil war when Abraham Lincoln was in office, too. The quality of the president has nothing to do with whether or not there's civil war."

Some readers griped about Republicans.

kkhjlh: "Talk about extreme politics. Does the Republican party really endorse this garbage? And they want to run the country."

But some blamed the president.

Jakerman: "Proof of how Obama has divided the country? Read the posts on here."

And a few others said maybe secession isn't such a bad idea.

RubinL: "So secede already! This time, not only won't we try to stop you, we'll even help you pack."

What do you think? Does the judge's commentary matter? Share your opinion in the comments area below and in the latest stories on CNN.com. Or sound off on video via CNN iReport.

A house divided among itself cannot stand. Unless of course, its a reality tv show.

Jackson was pretty bad, but everyone liked him so yeah that sounds just about right.

Just compare blue states to red states. Blue states hopelessly in debt, crime ridden, drug ridden, gang ridden, high poverty rates vs red states, balanced budgets, jobs, right to work, etc.

Sheesh, this judge already stated his comments were takin out of context. In case no ones realized it yet, Judge Tom Head is a republican and isnt it election year for judges too? Hes trying to explain his reasons for supporting a huge tax hike in his co.

No its because the government forgot their purpose. The government serves the people not tje other way around. Obama and his loony lefties have that backwards.

Thomas Jefferson said these two important things: 1tyranny is when the citizens fear the government but freedom is when the government fears the citizens. 2freedom stops when those who don't work oitweigh those who do work. The tea party tried to tell the government in a civil tone that we will not stand for an intrusive, oversized, overregulating, overcontrolling, and wasteful government. The itizens have asked for border security in a civil tone, the government didn't listen to either and Obama and his left wing media demonize the tea party and Governor brrewer while supporting the communist occupy movement. That is exactly how the American Revolution was started.

The judge is half right. There could be civil war again but only if Obama loses. The Black Panthers, Illegals, and welfare queens will riot if they don't get their way!

When one hears the term Civil War, they think of what they read in history books. His use of that term was unfortunate. It doesn't matter who is elected we are already seeing people's whose lives are in the balance. Labels being implicated based on where you live, who your friends are, what your net worth may be, whether you go to a house of worship, what color your skin is. I am a University professor and an automatic label is applied that I may be liberal or a radical. I am neither. Now people are fearful going to movie theatres thinking that a nut job may open fire on them and kill them. I've been called a Yankee when I married into a southern family. @Hamsta, Thomas Jefferson is rolling over in his grave seeing what this nation has become. The Fed has become too big and too intrusive in our lives. People are tired of not being citizens but consumers. The big banks who really run the global economy want debtors and their malpractice goes unpunished. Civility no longer exists, no matter what side of the political angle you may be on. Just take care of you and your own and if you want to donate something make it your time not money. I donate a lot of my time to animal shelters, nothing makes me feel better, so this is selfish not selfless. Ok the dazzle rant is over.

You too dazzle. And you know, I finally stopped telling people I volunteered at animal shelters. I actually HID it from certain people because they tried to guilt me into volunteering for THEIR causes. How backward is that?

@raven, I know what your saying but don't ever feel the need to hide who you are. I cleaned kitty litter boxes and walked dogs with many well know people who keep their volunteerism private only because they will be asked to do more and give more just because they have a famous name. Many an organization wants to donate money just because they can and want top billing on publicity. Some of the Junior League types come in and chat me up and ask "what do you do when you aren't here." Answer, "I am a mom." They cluck their tongues and walk away. They don't need to know that I have letters after my name or that I live in a certain zip code. Boring!!

@chrissy, that's exactly why I got it. Profits over people and they don't realize that motivated people can create profit in a normal economy.

You know what's NOT going to happen?
Another Civil War, and anyone who thinks this a great idea should be the first to put on whatever little uniform they deign to wear...but be very careful what one wishes for; 2012 is NOTHING like 1860, and the stakes and the potential loss of life are staggering...and do NOT forget who the commander-in-chief is.
    Want another Syria?
    I don't.
    Don't like this country?
    Then. Get. The. Heck. Out.

This is an act of sedition. Sedition is defined as: rebellion or incitement: actions or words intended to provoke or incite rebellion against government authority, or actual rebellion against government authority.
