3 U.S. Marines shot in Mexico

Three U.S. Marines were injured in a shooting south of Mexico City on Friday morning, a Mexican military official told CNN Mexico.

The motive behind the attack on the American servicemen, who were on a diplomatic mission, was not immediately known.

Unknown gunmen inside what was described as a Mexican federal police vehicle fired upon a U.S. Embassy vehicle that carried the U.S. servicemen, said the official, who declined to be named for security reasons.

The injured Marines were transported to a hospital in Cuernavaca, Mexico.

US marines on a 'diplomatic' mission in Mexico?
I sure hope these soldiers survive and get back home.

      "They're not soldiers. They're Marines."

Marines are part of the Navy, so doesn't that make them sailors?

A "diplomatic" mission, as opposed to a military mission, probably means they are assigned to the U.S. embassy in Mexico City. The Marines guard all of our embassies around the world.

Marines are routinely tasked with guarding US embassies and diplomats. There is nothing untoward about having them in Mexico City, where the USA has a LOT of active interests.

RayRay: I'm not a marine, but please have a friend take and post the video of when you tell a marine to his (or her) face that he's a sailor. Find one that's had a drink or two first.

MARINES, the smartest of the armed services. They get the navy to make their payroll.

Of course Marines are part of the Navy. Gives sailors someone to dance with on ship.

The Marines are NOT part of the navy. The U.S. Marines and the U.S. Navy are two distinct and separate military services. BOTH of them fall under the "Dept of the Navy", a CIVILIAN federal government organisation responsible for sea based military action. Thus why the Marines are NOT under the direction of the chief officer of the Navy (DNO) but both services ARE under the direction of the civilian secretary of the navy.

Most likely Marines assigned to the US Embassy. Since Marines on Embassy duty come under the control of the State Department, they have "diplomatic" status

      Unless you live in Chicago.

Obama started his community organizing in Chicago, so the illegal aliens are already organized into drug gangs and have the drive by shootings down pat Chicago.

But, you are right. We are still waiting for Obama's second term for him to bring this type of change to the rest of America.

With all the violence in beloved Mexico, families have to vacation in the U. S. What a shame that drugs can make real men and women want to kill each other. May La Virgen de Guadalupe to protect the innocent people, and ask Her Son, Jesus Christ, the Great Lion of Judah, to save the souls of these misguided drug dealers. Amen and amen.

what the heck are US Marines doing in Mexico? Trying to re-create another "Camarena" situation? Stop sending us guns and bullets from your country and stop consuming drugs, it is all US fault and only the US can stop it.

Marines are assigned to U.S. Embassy's abroad. They provide security for the embassy

US Marines provide security to all US embassies around the world. They also can be dispatched on various tasks from the embassy for such reasons as checking on the safety of American citizens. (This was done for my family when my father went missing in Nigeria for several days in the 1970's.) They are part of the embassy staff hence the "diplomatic" adjective.

It amazes me how that works. The drug trade is fueled by The U.S. consumer. The gun trade is fueled by the U.S. supplier. Illegal Immigration is fueled by jobs in the U.S. It is the U.S. fault that tens of thousands of kids speak english but wave Mexican flags. In a way I agree with you.

The U.S. should have never given Mexico back after the war. We should have kept it after we whupped 'em and it would have solved many of the problems today.

"The drug trade is fueled by The U.S. consumer. The gun trade is fueled by the U.S. supplier. Illegal Immigration is fueled by jobs in the U.S."

Are you seriously kidding me right now? You've just completely contradicted yourself. If the drug trade is fueled by the U.S. consumer, then the gun trade is fueled by the violent Mexican consumers. You can't have it both ways.

And illegal immigration is fueled by America being better than Mexico.

And the border is going to be tightened up. But it will be to keep the middle class from leaving with what little money they have left, not to keep the illegals out.

Maybe Mehico would like us to solve their war on crime problem for them. Take about 5 or 6 days at my estimate. Put the Marines, spec ops people at the border point south and say "go to panama, kill all things bad on the way"

It would take a LOT longer to fix the cartels. Because of their extreme wealth, cartels have infiltrated about 3/4 of the economy in Mexico. Cartels own parts of just about everything. If you travel Mexico, you are giving money to the cartels. It would be close to impossible to unwind the cartels from the Mexican economy – and their federal and state governments.

Mexico has been lost to cartels indefinitely. We're kidding ourselves if we think there is a quick fix.

No, gun running and cover-ups are the specialty of the Department of Justice and Attorney General Eric Holder.
