Protesters climb U.S. Embassy walls in Cairo

[Updated at 5:38 p.m. ET] Angry protesters climbed the walls of the U.S. Embassy in Cairo on Tuesday and tore down the American flag, apparently in protest of a film thought to insult the Prophet Mohammed.

A volley of warning shots were fired as a large crowd gathered around the compound, said CNN producer Mohammed Fahmy, who was on the scene, though it is not clear who fired the shots.

Egyptian police and army personnel have since formed defensive lines around the facility in an effort to prevent the demonstrators from advancing farther, but not before the protesters affixed their standard atop the embassy.

The black flag, which hangs atop a ladder inside the compound, is adorned with white characters that read, "There is no God but Allah and Mohammad is his messenger," an emblem often used in al Qaeda propaganda.

It was unclear which film upset the protesters.

I thought Muslims were peaceful and tolerant in their religion? I'll be sure to burn an effigy of Mohammed later.

The American Embassy in Cairo is considered American soil and this is no different than if they were to raise these Islamic flags at the site of where the twin towers used to stand. What the he$$ are we doing about this?

This makes me madder than hell that they are doing this on 9/11.

If a French buddist farts in Cairo the U.S. embassy gets sacked. So much for diplomacy. Time to go... Move whatever aid were were sending to Egypt to Israel until the Muslim Brotherhood pays for damages to OUR embassy.

"Respect for religious beliefs is a cornerstone of American democracy"

You got that one wrong champ. Respect isn't mandatory, liberty is. Making fun of your religion does NOT impact your ability to practice it.

Radical Muslims storm the American Embassy over a DUTCH film?! Well, nobody ever accused them of being intelligent. We need to stop all foreign aid to places like Egypt and Pakistan.

People make silly comments without realizing what they mean. If we cut off all aid to Pakistan they would simply not allow us to use their supply routes into Afghanistan. If we cut off all aid to Egypt they might forget about that little peace accord with Israel. We use aid as a foreign policy tool, not because we give a damn about homeless and hungry people.

It is time to bring home all our troops, and close all bases and embassies in every country except for our trusted allies. Stop all support and oh yah, all funding as well. Let's see who the world wants back in a couple years. Time for us to stop trying to buy friends and let the world wreck itself.
