Protesters climb U.S. Embassy walls in Cairo

[Updated at 5:38 p.m. ET] Angry protesters climbed the walls of the U.S. Embassy in Cairo on Tuesday and tore down the American flag, apparently in protest of a film thought to insult the Prophet Mohammed.

A volley of warning shots were fired as a large crowd gathered around the compound, said CNN producer Mohammed Fahmy, who was on the scene, though it is not clear who fired the shots.

Egyptian police and army personnel have since formed defensive lines around the facility in an effort to prevent the demonstrators from advancing farther, but not before the protesters affixed their standard atop the embassy.

The black flag, which hangs atop a ladder inside the compound, is adorned with white characters that read, "There is no God but Allah and Mohammad is his messenger," an emblem often used in al Qaeda propaganda.

It was unclear which film upset the protesters.

    Arab spring huh?

Muslim spring holds more truth. Looks like we might just have to get rid of ALL of them.

CNN isn't telling the whole story here. Apparently, this a broader protest against foreign NGOs in Egypt. What can't CNN check Arab news sites to get more background?

".......hurt the religious feelings of Muslims.." Yes, hurt feelings are always a defensible and sensible reason for violence.

Guess the 'Arab Spring' didn't go so well in Eygypt. You cannot change looney Muslims and while I'm not saying all Muslims are looney, those that are part of their religion and 'are peaceful' should step up to the plate once in a while and denounce their 'brothers' who are anything but peaceful and reational.

Whatever... Let's shut down the embassy and get the hell out of the Middle East. We can trade with them, but that's it. Let them figure it out for themselves. They haven't solved their issues in a thousand years, and they won't in our lifetimes.

This is just another example of why religion is a bad thing, in general. People get too offended when you start questioning it, or mocking it. That's stupid. No ones imaginary friend is better than anyone else's. Grow up!

We lost Iran to Muslim fanatics under Jimmy Carter's watch and now Egypt under Obama's, any correlations?

Nah, use tar (its cheaper by the gallon right now than gasoline) and then lob a few moltov co☼ktails their way and watch the entertainment. Just be sure you are wearing your SPF-50 sunscreen.

I wish they'd understand that we don't make Dutch movies in the United States. Dutch movies are made in the Netherlands. Could somebody please send me their email addresses so I can pass this information to them. It won't take long to sort this out. What a terrible misunderstanding.

It doesn't matter. The US is the symbol of the West to these people, whether it's the US, UK, Europe, or Israel.

We deserve a kick in the head from this revolt as any brainless ass diplomat knew the radical no logic fanatics would take over Egypt and leave Israel in a mess. We should have saved Mubarak for stability sake as democracy has a zero chance survival in Muslim countries. Assad in Syria should continue to save his country at any cost.

Who cares about these countries and Israel? Let them all fight and kill each other! Our only policy for that region should be containment; keep the violence within the region and other big powers out, until there are only a few of them left, then go and take and rebuild whatever is left.
