Protesters climb U.S. Embassy walls in Cairo

[Updated at 5:38 p.m. ET] Angry protesters climbed the walls of the U.S. Embassy in Cairo on Tuesday and tore down the American flag, apparently in protest of a film thought to insult the Prophet Mohammed.

A volley of warning shots were fired as a large crowd gathered around the compound, said CNN producer Mohammed Fahmy, who was on the scene, though it is not clear who fired the shots.

Egyptian police and army personnel have since formed defensive lines around the facility in an effort to prevent the demonstrators from advancing farther, but not before the protesters affixed their standard atop the embassy.

The black flag, which hangs atop a ladder inside the compound, is adorned with white characters that read, "There is no God but Allah and Mohammad is his messenger," an emblem often used in al Qaeda propaganda.

It was unclear which film upset the protesters.

Cultural Resepect is a two way street that we try to help defend. If this is the way of the world and the way the world see's the USA, maybe it is time to send some troops to Egypt-Iraqistan to visit. Let them try to take the flags then. RIP 9/11 Lets Roll!!!!

the embassy is condemning a peaceful file maker and side with the aggressors who stormed the embassy? lol, nice job obama administration did there.
egypt was once a peaceful country until obama decided to fund the so called "arab spring" and help his brothers in faith to take over

Who told you it was a Obama that funded the Arab spring? The repubs in the house were totally down for it, in fact thought we should take a more proactive role in toppling the old regimes. So, you can thank your republicans just as much, if not more than the President.

As an Egyptian-born I have one word to say to those protestors:
What a cheap attempt to label Egypt as a pro-terrorism in post-Mubarak era. What a bunch of morons. I am sorry USA, stupidity has no religion.

I appreciate your response, Talal. It means a lot. It frustrates me to see people become violent in defense of their religion, especially over something that is so small that CNN can't even figure out what it is about! I hope that people can appreciate that Arabs can and do make great Americans, as well.

The he11 with Egypt. We _still_ send them close to $1B a year in 'assistance'.
I can think of a number of better uses for that money.

I am sure if the 1.3 million U.S. tax dollars in aid suddenly dried up and removed from the Egyptian governement and its people, the EGY governement would figure out a better way to insure the safety of the US Embassy and its people. We surely could use that 1.3 million dollars here in the US since they want to do harm to the hand that aides in feeding them.

So much for helping to free them from Hosni Mubarak. Why are we helping these people free them from dictators and in turn they protest against us (Egypt, Libya, Iraq, ….)? STAY AWAY from Syria. As much Syrians want us to help them in getting rid of Assad, once we help and Assad is gone, they will NOT like USA the next min.

Is this really news? This happens quite often. Everything upsets them. If they didn't have anything to get upset about, they would have nothing to do

These Muslim protestors remind me of Christians protesting at abortion centers.

Why are all religious people so wacko about their fantasy gods.

Sorry, but unlike religious people, I believe in Dinosaurs and Carbon Dating.

You mean like that relic they found in Texas that was petrified and dated back to a couple of million years that turned out to be the heel off a cowboy boot?

    • sly

Not sure, as I don't go to Texas.

But yes, I do believe in carbon dating, science, and the existence of Dinosaurs.

And yes, I think religious people are rather misguided in their irrational beliefs.

But I believe that societies should tolerate religious beliefs, and tolerate people having different political beliefs.

Heck, I even think it is pointless for Yankee fans to argue with Red Sox fans about who is the 'best' team.

Ahh the typical "tolerant" athiest once again showing their ignorance.

Remind me again the last time a Christian group attacked an abortion clinic in the same manner that these Muslims have attacked our embassy.

While you're at it, why don't you show me where the official stance of Christianity is that dinosaurs don't exist and carbon dating is false.

      I'll wait....

    Muslims are unhappy!

    They're not happy in Gaza.
    They're not happy in Egypt.
    They're not happy in Libya.
    They're not happy in Morocco.
    They're not happy in Iran.
    They're not happy in Iraq.
    They're not happy in Yemen.
    They're not happy in Afghanistan.
    They're not happy in Pakistan.
    They're not happy in Syria.
    They're not happy in Lebanon.

    So, where are they happy?

    They're happy in Australia.
    They're happy in England.
    They're happy in France.
    They're happy in Italy.
    They're happy in Germany.
    They're happy in Sweden.
    They're happy in the USA.
    They're happy in Norway.
    They're happy in Canada.

They're happy in every country that is not Muslim.

    And who do they blame?

    ... Not Islam.
    ... Not their leadership.
    ... Not themselves.

Excuse me, but how much dumber can WE get for allowing this to happen in our Country???

You speak too generally. There are many Muslims that are happy in countries that are predominantly Muslim but those happy Muslims do not sell newspapers or advertisements. Unfortunately, the media, in the predominantly Christian U.S., focus on the negative side of the religion.

They aren't speaking too generally at all. Muslims do not like christians. They do not like jews. They do not like anybody. They have a nice happy face when there's money involved, but when they're at their temples, they're cursing the world they live in. Islam's ultimate goal is to take-over humanity and convert it to Islam. It's the the quaran/koran/wh0re-an/whatever. Don't fool yourself for a second.

Jimmy, currently please be specific, that would be the Muslim religion. Think about that next time you drive by a hospital or charity in the US whose name starts with the word "Saint". On the flip side, you don't really see too many hospitals anywhere on earth with the name "Islam" or "Mohammed" or "Muslim"..well you get the idea.

Just mentioning this so that when Liberals try to paint all religion as a problem, in the last 100 years, it has been really on one that is a problem. They have yet to go through their reformation. And that one is ...Islam. TD01

The greatest possible insult to the "blessed prophet" is simply to tell the truth about him.
