Protesters climb U.S. Embassy walls in Cairo

[Updated at 5:38 p.m. ET] Angry protesters climbed the walls of the U.S. Embassy in Cairo on Tuesday and tore down the American flag, apparently in protest of a film thought to insult the Prophet Mohammed.

A volley of warning shots were fired as a large crowd gathered around the compound, said CNN producer Mohammed Fahmy, who was on the scene, though it is not clear who fired the shots.

Egyptian police and army personnel have since formed defensive lines around the facility in an effort to prevent the demonstrators from advancing farther, but not before the protesters affixed their standard atop the embassy.

The black flag, which hangs atop a ladder inside the compound, is adorned with white characters that read, "There is no God but Allah and Mohammad is his messenger," an emblem often used in al Qaeda propaganda.

It was unclear which film upset the protesters.

Is it just me or does it seem like some people are constantly looking for an excuse to flip the bird to Uncle Sam. First of all, the film they're protesting is Dutch, not American. Second, why can't these Egyptians learn a little self control? Why can't they learn to accept criticism and satire of their religion? You can justifiably criticize US foreign policy all you want or say that certain Christian groups are just as radical, but two wrongs don't make a right. The storming of a sovereign nation's embassy by a mob and the theft and desecration of its flag from that facility is in no way justified here. These protesters need to grow up.

All the "peace loving" Muslims, Mohammed, and Allah can collectively kiss the bottom of my shoe. They must be running out of little boys to bugger or women to kill. Taking up good oxygen the rest of us could be using....I remember 9-11. America rules....suck it all cowardly terrorists

Obama just gave these thugs $1 BILLION in debt relief as a reward for democratizing. He also promised loan guarantees. Immediately after the Arab Spring, he gave them $2 BILLION in extra cash on top of the $2 billion they get every year like clockwork.

This is not a democracy. Obama is wrong – again – to hand out money to people who hate our guts, especially while the US middle class evaporates. Where's our help for underwater houses? In the hands of Islamic fanatics in Egypt!

Go ahead fellas, keep at it. Show everyone your true colors, that way when someone finally does something about the Muslim problem the evidence will be irrefutable, provided by the extremists themselves.

It's more than just a Dutch's easy to understand that. The Mubarrak/Egypt relationship with the US wasn't a true friendship but more a bought friendship. Egypt was number 2 on the foreign-aid-from-the-US list (Israel (of course) was number 1). 2 billion a year to Egypt was shut up money....i.e. let Israel do what they want, keep quiet and you receive money. It looks more-and-more like people are being honest about the situation.

If you people don't stop kissing Mohammeds taint and start treating each other better than I'm going to come down there and make your wives the boss of you!

It saddens me that the fully competant, trained and armed Marine guard detachment is under the orders of the ambassador/administration. While naturally it would of course be ill advised and counter productive to demonstrate their capabilities to the crowd and all watching. It would have been a powerful message.

Nice. And on our day of extreme mourning. Black hearts with black flags. And about a movie apparently no one even knows about. I guess black is the color of most muslims. I had hope for the youth of Egypt after their uprising but this don't cut it. All muslims should return to their country of origin and America remove everything American from those countries. They don't deserve our help. Let other muslim countries take care of their own. Protectionism is a real good idea. The founding fathers are hurling in their graves over our stupidity.

This is anohter reason the USA should stop giving money away to countries just because we want them to be our friend. If they dont want us there then we should take our money and our support and leave. I feel qualitified to make this statement because I've completed numerous overseas tours as a US Soldier. It should be easy to leave and come home...

Im ignorant, but we should just fight once and for all. You can't change someones way of thinking if you don't pound it into them right? lol just saying I may as well be ignortheant too. muslims say everyone who is not islam is considered second class * to most 3rd and 4th class in the rankings of rats and roaches. Why not respect everyone's equal rights? The violence will continue to happen for decades to come. Why climb walls and replace the american flag who has nothing to do with this nonsense during the mark of 9/11? Why have an embassy in a muslim country? We continue to turn other way and only respond with the loss of thousands.

‘I was so depressed last night thinking about the economy, wars, jobs, my savings, social security, retirement funds, etc., I called a suicide hotline and got a call centre in Pakistan. When I told them I was suicidal, they got all excited and asked if I could drive a truck.

And by the way, how do Egyptian Muslims feel when they burn Christians alive in churches? The attacks are ongoing, but Obama turns a blind eye and deaf ear to it. How can he reward countries like this with billions and billions in foreign assistance?

So does the mainstream media. A blind eye to reelected their annointed candidate. And that is the biggest crime of all...not reporting the truth. TD01
