Protesters climb U.S. Embassy walls in Cairo

[Updated at 5:38 p.m. ET] Angry protesters climbed the walls of the U.S. Embassy in Cairo on Tuesday and tore down the American flag, apparently in protest of a film thought to insult the Prophet Mohammed.

A volley of warning shots were fired as a large crowd gathered around the compound, said CNN producer Mohammed Fahmy, who was on the scene, though it is not clear who fired the shots.

Egyptian police and army personnel have since formed defensive lines around the facility in an effort to prevent the demonstrators from advancing farther, but not before the protesters affixed their standard atop the embassy.

The black flag, which hangs atop a ladder inside the compound, is adorned with white characters that read, "There is no God but Allah and Mohammad is his messenger," an emblem often used in al Qaeda propaganda.

It was unclear which film upset the protesters.

II feel sorry for the dead Ambassador and his family but we do not and can not dare even to say something wrong about Jesus Bless him. He is holy to us as Moses and all Gods messengers. It is a sin in Islam to say anything bad about him or any of Gods messengers. I hope mercy and peace for the Ambassador family. I really feel painful for this innocent person and family that have nothing to do with the incident. Wish and hope peace and justice gets served. There are evil people on both sides that do bad and innocent people pay the price. God have Mercy on all of us living until we get back to him then we all see fair and actual justice from the source of mercy and justice.

Last year during the 9/11 rememberance...Michelle leaned over with a disgusted look on her face and said "all of this for a damm flag!" Her husband with a sarcastic grin...nodded.

Well, the American flag, a symbol of of the United States, is going to be the undoing of Obama. Thank you God!

how interesting this occurred on the same day that Obama denied the Israeli Prime Minister's request for a meeting while he was in Washington because his schedule was "full"... Yet Obama is scheduled to appear on Letterman. Why were the Marines (posted to all US Embassies) not ordered to open fire on these Islamist zealot thugs as soon as our sovereignty was invaded. The silence from the White House is deafening.

Fellow Americans should take the embassy attack seriously and to heart, as well as other matters in the Middle East. Here's the deal... It is not our flag that gives us power, but our God who has blessed us. Our flag is just another flag – without God it and we are powerless. US elected officials who are non believers or cling to their religion of evolution or atheism have all but banished our Lord from the public while allowing our Protestant roots to be trampled on. Ancient Israel thought for a while they were all that and more... until they lost sight of the very God who blessed them with power and might. This can easily happen to the USA as well. WAKE UP AMERICA!

Finally, a politician who understands a non-violent stance to aggression is the right approach. Martin Luther King would be proud!

ahany: What are yu talking about!? The embassador killed was in Libya, NOT Egypt! And the guy was killed by the U.S> NATO-backed rebels.

As for the Egyptians, good on them! They picked the actual arm of israel, the U.S. who has the weaponry, and who will attack whoever israel wants.

    NO WAR

Obama should have thought of increasing security before his policies destabilized the region and they started murdering Americans.

    Another foreign policy failure.
