Protesters climb U.S. Embassy walls in Cairo

[Updated at 5:38 p.m. ET] Angry protesters climbed the walls of the U.S. Embassy in Cairo on Tuesday and tore down the American flag, apparently in protest of a film thought to insult the Prophet Mohammed.

A volley of warning shots were fired as a large crowd gathered around the compound, said CNN producer Mohammed Fahmy, who was on the scene, though it is not clear who fired the shots.

Egyptian police and army personnel have since formed defensive lines around the facility in an effort to prevent the demonstrators from advancing farther, but not before the protesters affixed their standard atop the embassy.

The black flag, which hangs atop a ladder inside the compound, is adorned with white characters that read, "There is no God but Allah and Mohammad is his messenger," an emblem often used in al Qaeda propaganda.

It was unclear which film upset the protesters.

Its only a matter of time before those that live of the dollars of tourist (90+% of the country) come riding in to break this crap up. I have been to Egypt a few times and many Egyptians do love America but like anything else you will have those that are against us, you will never have 100% satisfaction no matter what you do.

I really wish the reporter would offer some explanation as to why the US Embassy was attacked because some Dutch guy made a movie. Makes NO sense.

You should care because, basically, Egypt just invaded sovereign US land.

@Josh No they did not invade sovereign land. There is no legal convention that states an embassy is sovereign land, it is something Hollywood made up. If you want to know more reference the Vienna Conventions that deal with Embassies and diplomats.

Contrary to popular belief, diplomatic missions do not enjoy full extraterritorial status and are not sovereign territory of the represented state.[5][6] Rather, the premises of diplomatic missions remain under the jurisdiction of the host state while being afforded special privileges (such as immunity from most local laws) by the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations. Diplomats themselves still retain full diplomatic immunity, and (as an adherent to the Vienna Convention) the host country may not enter the premises of the mission without permission of the represented country. The term "extraterritoriality," therefore, is often used in this broader sense when applied to diplomatic missions.

Anyone else find it ironic that this is happening on 9/11? Or are you all too stupid to see the connection?

Do you think it is ironic that CNN is also running an opinion piece about Muslims in the US and how they feel afraid and as if their rights are being tested along with this article?

    Cesspool islamic state @Paul ??
As Mark Twain had said. Travel is the enemy of bigotry, ignorance and prejudice. had you traveled to these 'cess pools' before we took it upon ourselves to invade and occupy you would have found that we westerners always had a jolly good time there even deciding to retire in those 'cess pools'.

Why weren't the US Marines defending our Embassy and our Flag ?

They don't have a battalion of Marine guards at the Embassy. They have, at most, like 10 on duty and/or available. There were hundreds of protesters, and unless they were firing on the Marines, it is very unlikely that the Marines would fire first.

Don't you just love that CNN has an opinion piece today that preaches about misunderstood muslims living in fear in the USA; and why muslims are unjustly feared because it's only a small minority that hates America, LOL.

Hey CNN. You can take all the articles you're running today about being sympathetic toward Muslims and shove 'em right up your routers. Thanks to Islam for reminding us today that this war will never end.

I agree. Let them find someone else to kill in the name of their god. They should make a dutch film where Mohammed sends every person to hell that killed in his name..........where are my virgins? They are in hell and they are hung like horses. They are the pin, you're the cushion, hahahahahah
