Slain ambassador warned in '08 about extremists near Benghazi

Before he became U.S. ambassador to Libya, J. Christopher Stevens warned in a 2008 diplomatic cable of jihadist sentiment growing not far from Benghazi.

Stevens, who became ambassador to Libya this year,  was killed this week in an attack that U.S. sources tell CNN was planned by a pro-al Qaeda group of extremists. While it is not definitively clear whether this group, or what group specifically, is behind the attack, it's clear that Stevens expressed concern about a radical movement fomenting in the port city of Derna.

The cable was leaked in the trove that WikiLeaks released in 2010 and 2011, and CNN reported on it last year.

In his 2008 missive Stevens, who at the time was U.S. deputy chief of mission in the North African nation, wrote about that "one Libyan interlocutor likened young men in Derna to Bruce Willis' character in the action picture "Die Hard", who stubbornly refused to die quietly."

There is "frustration at the inability of eastern Libyans to effectively challenge" Moammar Gadhafi's regime, Stevens wrote.

That and "a concerted ideological campaign by returned Libyan fighters from earlier conflicts, have played important roles in Derna's development as a wellspring of Libyan foreign fighters in Iraq."

Moammer Gadhafi was killed in October 2011, at the hands of Libyans.

"Other factors include a dearth of social outlets for young people, local pride in Derna's history as a locus of fierce opposition to occupation, economic disenfranchisement among the town's young men. Depictions on satellite television of events in Iraq and Palestine fuel the widespread view that resistance to coalition forces is justified and necessary," Stevens wrote.

Stevens describes Derna: "The lower-middle class neighborhood, comprising poured concrete homes crowded along largely unpaved streets, sits on a hill overlooking the town ... A number of residents were on the streets; however, they were visibly more wary and less friendly than in other Libyan towns."

Wow. So he warned Hillary of the pro Al Qaeda eastern tribes in 2008, and in her infinite wisdom she still chose to arm the tribes to topple Qadafi, and now those armed tribes killed him. Dude, I am sorry. You forfeited your life working for a complete imbicile.

This result reminds me of the blame being put on Bush because of 9/11. If President Obama was told of this information, he should have been more cautious about Libya and Egypt instead of embracing it. Looking back with his statements last year about the Arab Spring, he looks like a complete fool.

In defence of John. You guys don't win an argument by calling someone with a differing position a moron. What you are trying to do makes you the same as the mob in Benghazi and Cairo – you are pawns in the hands of the powerful few. All you are doing is trying the silence the voice of dissent. Check out the history of what happened in post-Tsar Russia and pre-WWII Germany, in Cuba, in North Korea and China. You guys are doing the same thing to John, who has been just someone who articulated a personal view different from the mob bias/status quo of CNN.

Instead of attempting to force censure on another person which is frankly hypocritical, you could listen to both and form your own opinions balancing the opinions of both sides. Its fairly rare that anyone has an objective opinion anymore. But go ahead, you can tell me to take myself off somewhere to be shut up by those of you who don't want to hear what I have to say either. Guess what, you can choose to disregard it, or continue hating each other. I still get to say it and I wouldn't stop Fox news or CNN or anyone else from saying anything the feel they want to say, misguided or not, its not hate mongering its a difference of opinion or is anyone that disagrees with those of you hating on the orgininal comment automatically a horrible person. Two or three sentences of a differnce of opinion and this guy's a hate breeding insult deserving moron? Come on, don't be a hyprocrite and open your mind a little. This is a trajedy to be mourned, not to cause more infighting between what are decent people who are saddened by this event and lashing out at each other over the details, failing the big picture.

I'm not a diplomat nor have I ever lived in Iraq but even I as an American observer would have told you during the Libyan 'resistance' that America was cutting its nose to spite its face. The one sided reporting in Libya by the Western media killed the last remaining faith I had in reporting. Sarkozy the cheerleader, along with Cameron and Obama helped caused this mess in Libya as well as Mali. Ironic that this happened on Sept 11 by groups the US had armed and 11 years ago, the people who bombed the twin towers had also previously been armed by the US to fight in Afghanistan. With US foreign policy as it is, it might be better to let children decide our foreign policy.

I'm from Canada. I am a independent observer of America Politics. I find CNN completely unreliable as a news source. NBC, CBS have infuriated me at times too. Believe it or not, Fox News is actually fair and balance. Their Opinion shows are just that, but look at their news reports, they actually do a good journalistic work. CNN failed by every standard of journalism, in my view, though.

No, I do not claim that everything I disagree with is a lie. And I do my own research, and I've found flaws in things that are said by both sides. I also see truths that are distorted and spun to reinforce the opinions of both parties, especially their extreme wings. The reason I consider myself a liberal lies in my belief that this should be ONE nation, not a country divided along the lines of ideology. I can not support a party which proudly proclaimed that their primary objective is to "make sure that Obama is a one term president" when the country needed true bipartisanship to resolve a crisis. I believe that we should be able to talk to one another without resorting to name calling and insults. I am not a robot, and I will make up my own mind as to who I choose to support.

Yesterday, the extremists armed by Hillary Clinton killed four Americans. Plain as the nose on your face. Come on, Arab Spring is a total disaster.

I am so sick and tired to the "standard Muslim response" of total irrational violence tyrannical response to everything they don't like in the name of Mohammed and Islam. Who died and left them boss? They don't put their pants on one leg at a time? What if everytime we were slighted we went beserk. What kind of society would we be? I find it hard to welcome any Muslims at this point, knowing that their core values are so on the edge of violence. Ridiculous!

A typical muslim society. Majority of muslims are not religious but they don't dare to confess their opinions because of fear. Thats how terrorists have taken over the muslim world.

Oooo, the festering rodents sqeal in unison. It is no wonder you are devoted sycophant disciples of a failed administration. The arming of the known pro Al Qaeda eastern tribes was completely and thoroughly a Hillary/Barack initiative, and to disavow that betrays you as apologists of failure. This man is dead for the mistakes of your leader, and you still defend him? Islamic Brotherhood are standing on the wall of the US Embassy in Cairo tearing down the US flag while raising the Al Qaeda flag, and you still defend him? The Arab Spring installs extremist regimes hostile to the US, and you defend that.

Outnumbered, I am pleased to be opposed to you. Your position is indefensible and all the backslapping clamoring "We're right and we don't watch fox" won't change that.

So what are your thoughts on George Bush, were you a supporter, everything he did was right on. How about Reagan who actually gave weapons to Osama bin Laden in the 80's. Your pathetic and ignorant beyond comprehension.

Bill. You are on the right track. Don't mind them. John won't respond to actual logic, it is a foreign concept. He is actually suffering from some kind of complex, seen in his comment about standing outnumbered against the world. Tom and John shield their partisanship by attacking your grammar. They couldn't write a paragraph between them without errors. And Sid, well, I can't tell where he is coming from, but when you use capital letters...what can I say? My experience with half of the GOP partisans is this: for them it is emotional, not rational. Trying to convince them of something is useless. Write what you want to write to get your point across so the 10 percent undecided might read a different point of view. These guys will never be convinced nor will they change. 🙂

Here's a novel concept you partisan hacks. Both Bush and Obama were wrong in putting us smack in the middle of sectarian violence and ruining any inkling of stability that previously existed. Wait what? Obama and Bush were the same? How could that be?!!

    "Experts point to al Qaeda"
I wonder if it could be some of the "flickers of al Qaeda" members that were indicated by an American general during the assistance of Libyian rebels to overthrow Omar? So again, America planted the seeds of violence towards itself.

You are correct. They will never be civil towards the West. Their "religion" is at odds with everything we stand for. Infidels must either convert to Islam or be killed. Those who believe that Islam is a peaceful "religion" are very misguided.

They have trained groups worldwide to create 'pearl harbor events' as they wish.

You need better conspiracy theories. For a decent starting point a conspiracy theory must, most importantly, make sense. THEN try and build a case.

If the parties committing the conspiracy are harming themselves by committing it, as is the case you are describing, why would they do so? All 9/11 did for Israel was make sure the US was already too engaged to do much about Iran's nukes.

There is a factual mistatement in tis article...'..Ghaddafi killed at the hands of Libyans". The whole truth is there was a NATO airstrike on his convoy and he was gravely wounded. Then, he was killed at the hands of a jihadist mob.
