No bombs found after evacuations at 2 universities

[Updated at 1:51 p.m. ET] No explosives were found at two U.S. universities that had ordered evacuations after they received bomb threats Friday morning, officials said.

The evacuations happened at the University of Texas at Austin and North Dakota State University. People were allowed back into the University of Texas buildings at noon CT Friday, though Friday's classes have been canceled, the school said on its website.

Police and federal authorities, including a bomb squad, investigated the Texas threats. A University of Texas police spokesman told CNN that "it was a general bomb threat on campus." A university spokeswoman told CNN affiliate KXAN that a male claiming to be with al Qaeda called the university and said that bombs were placed all over campus, and that they would go off at about 10 a.m. CT (11 a.m. ET).

About 51,000 students attend the flagship university, which is located in central Texas. University spokeswoman Rhonda Weldon said that at any time up to 70,000 people could be on campus.

North Dakota State University told its students and employees to leave campus entirely by 10:15 a.m. CT, according to its website. A NDSU official later said that the campus had been swept, and classes would resume at 2 p.m. CT.

I dont understand the Russia comments on this blog. They are enemies just like Muslims. Russia has been broken apart so much that are no threat at all whatsoever.

White people pretend to be Al Qaeda terrorists and claim they have bombs at UT in order to cancel their classes to push back exam date. They do that so they can have more time to study for exams. Stupid white people. White people ruin everything.

Well the same happened at North Dakota State so presumably this was not a single student worried about a quiz. And as far as far as your perception of racism goes...maybe you should heed your own advice bigot.

So the Texas school told people to "immediately evacuate ALL buildings and get as far away as possible", but the FBI and a university spokeswoman downplayed the seriousness of the threat.

Valpo University now has a high level threat of 'an unspecified threat'

The threat was made through unspecified graffiti, (whatever THAT means) and although there is an increased security present, no classes have been canceled.

Several of you joke about this being a student not wanting to take exams... the "funny" thing is that we DO have radical muslims living here in the US and I for one do not think they will remain "quiet" for very long. - We take threats as SERIOUS as we should. This is not a time to kick back and relax but to tighten up security within the US as well as our embassies. Nuclear Power Plants, Water treatment facilities, mail processing centers, all govnmt blgs, food processing plants...those would be a few good places to start... Anyone remember Anthrax? It's not just bombs, planes, guns, or fires that we have to worry about these days. The very air we breathe can be deadly. -- So as for me, I'll wait and watch with abated breath!

They *have* to take bomb threats seriously; not doing so would be foolhardy.
Being as it seems that there were threats phoned in to two uni's at the opposite ends of the country, I am wondering if there is an electronic footprint that can be followed to catch the perps; Twitter, FB?

Hey guys, stop the lazy student meme. I was there as a member of our bldg safety evacuation team. After clearing my assigned floor, I go outside to make sure no one goes back in my assigned entrance. I spent a great deal of time arguing with students worried about missing class or an exam. This is not funny. We take any kind of alarm seriously.

Another point. Al Qaeda is to Islam what the KKK is to Christianity. You are confusing peaceful religions with extremist groups claiming to act in the name of those religions.

The Koran plainly quotes Allah commanding "Repel the invading infidels" and to treat Renegade Muslims who join forces with infidels "harshly".
There are muslims obedient to the Koran, and then there are Muslims obedient to invading nations. (like Vichy French who sided with Hitlers Nazis)
The bible clearly quotes God commanding "Vengeance is MINE." (not yours)
There are those who are obedient to Allah and there are thise obedient to God. And then there are those ignorant of holy writings, and so pretent to be faithful to the word of their chosen God. (hypocrites and rebels)

Both the Koran and the bible discriminate between those whom are obedient to God, and those whom are obedient to nations.
It is impossible to slave for two masters, for one will despise you eventually. God is jealous when you serve other godz ya know.

Didn't realize that God was so shallow, or that He/She/IT suffered from such a base, human emotion such as jealousy. That ought to tell you something right there about God.

@Mary – Opening yourself up to God's word? Sounds trite. Can you elaborate? God has never spoken to me. Nor has Satan. I'm a good person who does good things, helps people out when I can, etc. I like to think I'm a good person, not to curry favor with some omnipotent being that will guarantee me everlasting life, but because it's the right thing to do.

Whew, my baptism record. Got that when I was six....Should be around someplace in case I get asked for it. Oh, I could get a new one, but the church I was baptized in is now a public park and the diocese didn't keep all the records over 40 years. Oh and Obama speaks Arabic? Which one of the 26 dialects does he speak?

White, but OB has led us to a greatest economic time since the Great Depression and he looks Cool on TV and speaks really well and has spent more $$ than all the potus's combined with nothing to show for it. Its like a huge Roman candle- it looks cool, even makes people awstruck then you realize all your money went up in smoke and have nothing to show for it- but he is a great talker and the other countries love us now.
