U.S. delegation will not attend Ahmadinejad's U.N speech, spokeswoman says

The U.S. delegation "has decided not to attend" the speech to be delivered by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad before the United Nations General Assembly, Erin Pelton, spokeswoman for the U.S. Mission to the United Nations, said in a statement Wednesday.

"Over the past couple of days, we've seen Mr. Ahmadinejad once again use his trip to the U.N. not to address the legitimate aspirations of the Iranian people but to instead spout paranoid theories and repulsive slurs against Israel," Pelton said.

The Iranian leader's addresses to the assembly have often generated controversy in the past. The tensions over Tehran's disputed nuclear program and speculation over a possible attack on Iran by Israel offer ample material for drama this time around.

In previous years, several delegations have walked out during Ahmadinejad's speeches, which have assailed the United States and criticized countries that he said used the Holocaust as an "excuse to pay ransom to Zionists."

Five things we learned from Day One of the U.N. debate

He will be taking to the podium Wednesday, a day after President Barack Obama told the assembly that while Washington remains committed to a diplomatic solution to Iran's nuclear program, the United States "will do what we must to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon."

Iran says its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes and to fill energy shortages, but Western leaders believe Tehran is an aspiring armed nuclear power. U.N. inspectors have also expressed doubts about the program's aims.

This is a leader who is so off track it hurts. Anytime you hear the words "new world order" you have just got to stop yourself from barfing up your last meal. Especially as we are looking at a new way into the solar system... we have robots exploring planets and soon we will be mining resources in outer space. This will require vast amounts of USA's technologies and expertise...it is just ridiculous to listen to someone from the back of the room calling for reorganization in this world when it is about to achieve the greatest advancements ever know to man.

Anyone with an IQ over 10 knows that Iran is seeking to acquire nuclear weapons. Iran knows that this is the best chance they have – the U.S. has gotten significantly worn out from the unnecessary war in Iraq. They're following the same path as India and Pakistan – pretend to be only interested in energy and then explode test devices once you have mastered the technology.

Iran has already exploded a test device – they refused to let nuclear inspectors near it.

The United Nation's International Atomic Energy Agency was created to stop proliferation of nuclear weapons. They are useless. Obama has kicked this problem down the road four years. He is useless. Most amazingly, jews still donate 70% of Obama's campaign contributions, and vote 70% democrat. It's hard to muster sympathy for them. They want the US to take this problem so Hezbollah doesn't barrage them with all the ordnance stockpiled across southern Lebanon. Your problem jews, figure it out. In a perfect world, they'll launch at the same time and wipe each other out.

If US is not even willing to listen to what Iran has to say, so much for the talk on diplomacy and such right? Obama said, there is still time for discussions. He follows it up by not listening. So, to Obama, discussions woudl mean "listen to me and I need not listen to you"?

Who one earth said he wasn't listening?
Because he wasn't physically in the room?

The *good* thing is we do not have to listen to anymore rambling speeches by this guy who is nothing more than a ventriloquist's dummy for the Ayatollah.
      This was his last appearance.

First off, I'd like to assure you our President was listening. He has huge giant floppy ears and can hear stuff on the moon. Just because he wasn't in the building doesn't mean he couldn't hear what was said. He is smart and keeps one ear to the ground.

Not listening in the room speaks volumes. Obama knows what is said, they don't have to be in the room and listen to his crap.

I think the American delegation should write a song about how stupid Ahmadinejad is and sing it at the UN.

I think exposing his true thoughts is enough. Now we should put what he says on the airwaves in Iran. He is second fiddle to the religious leader.

Is that diner, if not, what is a niner? I think it is show and tell with the UN. You state your views and it is televised, if you go back on your word or intentions it is on tape. If you listen to M.J. he says they are peaceful and have no nuclear intentions. Israel should sit back and see what his intentions are and then react. Starting a war is what M.J. wants so he can blame the jews and the US. Dismiss him and ignore an idiot.

the usual knee jerk reactions, juvenile babbling out ones own view point, without considering others, and semi aware opinions, Iran is unfairly attacked for the oil, hypocrisy by the US, mad dog name calling and lack of vision, the UN could work, when all countries are treated equally it will, the day is coming

don't get me wrong. i am in no way on his side. i am on the side of respect and up holding true American values. what kind of a message are we sending the people of Iran when we will not even sit in the same room as that countries leader. to see the protest outside of this persons hotel, and the humiliation that this person was put through on American soil makes me embarrassed to be on American. I believe the proper thing to do would be to give the same respect (regardless of personal views) that we give our allies. because otherwise we are hypocrites in the whole free speech area. we don't choose to walk out or not show up if our president has something to say that we don't want to hear or disagree with. or maybe America is a hypocrite nation. i mean we have laws and regulations that protect our workers in factories and industries and we protect our environment. but when American big business step outside of the u.s. to do business with other poor countries we could care less..come one we most certainly don't follow or even insist on having those same policies for the working people of those countries now do we.
