California governor signs gay conversion therapy ban

California Gov. Jerry Brown has signed a bill banning therapy aimed at turning gay kids straight, saying such efforts "will now be relegated to the dustbin of quackery."

"This bill bans non-scientific 'therapies' that have driven young people to depression and suicide," Brown tweeted.

The California Senate passed the bill in May. It will kick in on January 1.

The bill prohibits efforts to change the sexual orientation of patients under age 18.

Hello Kenney- I am glad at least you will be BACK. I think all of us were worried about your statement the other night. Now we know you will be okay and back with your advise and insight. I am fine and busy with local government. I know noone should have to make such a bill. I think some people have been so called "turned straight", and now are married and have opened centers where they *turn* others (gays) straight.

@ bombo thats a good question,,,its a fear of being different from others i would thimk and then the rejection of society,,,but in the long range future there is a good chance that a few of these kids will revert back knowing that they will be excepted,,,and then again it could be a choice of parents being ashamed,,,the immediate gay and lesbian community is very strong and thats where they would find such support relevant support that is i had no support to a point until i got on cnn blogs it all depends on how the person reaches out of the closet and seeks the right people to help them in this

@Bombo-No but with his life in shambles because he could not tell the truth even to his wife who cares. (LIAR) that he is.
@Kenney- Quack science is scary. Damage could be done with an experiment on children. Maybe worse than being bullied. I also see it as being more confusing to young adults who are gay. Be safe, Kenney.

Some psychotherapists kept advertising cures "Conversion Therapy" for kids under 18.....There never was a "law" for or against it. Although science has caught up with reality, the practice is still in use in most areas. California decided it was quackery and now bans it!

      You are spot on, PT.
I have found that it is mostly the *parents* who are ashamed and unaccepting of the supposed stigma of their child being gay is who take their kids to these "conversion" centers.
After the child is an adult, and can make choices legally for themself, if they so choose, they can avail themselves to these services.
I'm not the greatest fan of Jerry Brown, but this bill is a good thing.
PS: Shame on the parents who cannot accept their child for their gender preference; it's not a disease; it's an affair of the heart.

Thanks Tony for clearing that up. Are you saying it has been proven to work and are studies that have proven the therapy to work? It is so new I would think there would not be enough of a study to validate it to be able to "cure" someone from being gay.

Obama Mama, this practice has been going on for a long, long time; kept under wraps because of the absolute quackery of it.
There are people who have stopped acting on their feelings to fall in love with the gender they prefer; this is no way a cure, but just a cessation and tamping down of their natural inclination to the gender they prefer.

Thank you banasy, I did not know how long this had been practiced. Now I see how the govenor would want to put it out of practice and that a study of gays could have been done by the people who have been thru the process. I learn something new everyday.

@Kenney sometimes when you hide and then reveal, I think you find the people who have always loved you, still do.

@@@banasy c,,,i didnt have a choic it was either come out and be honest with it or lose my daughters because of pint up frustration,,,i chose the healthier way,,,and further more if someone is gay male or female it does not require action or to act on it,,,i know this as a fact,,,but warrior ? Maybe,,,its the younger generation that will see the most change in society and exceptance of them,,,we older folks just paved the way,,,for them,,,now they are at the helm
