It appears Joran van der Sloot is about to add a new role to his résumé - father.
Van der Sloot became well-known around the world for the murder of Stephany Flores in Peru and for being arrested twice, but never charged, in the 2005 disappearance of U.S. teenager Natalee Holloway in Aruba.
Now the Dutch citizen may be preparing to welcome a new child into the world while he is serving 28 years in a Peruvian prison for Flores' death, according to the Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf, which says it confirmed the news over the phone with van der Sloot himself.
2011: Video shows van der Sloot confessing that he killed woman
The mother, identified only as "Leidi" by the newspaper, met van der Sloot in prison and became pregnant after an unsupervised visit with the jailed 28-year-old, the paper said.
Van der Sloot's lawyer said he did not confirm the pregnancy, as stated by the newspaper. But Maximo Altez told Mayra Cuevas of "In Session" that Leidi is registered as van der Sloot’s girlfriend at Piedras Gordas Prison and they have had conjugal visits. Van der Sloot can receive visitors once or twice a month. Altez says he met Leidi in prison through another inmate.
This isn't the first time rumors have swirled around van der Sloot's love life since he's been in the spotlight. Earlier reports that he was getting married behind bars were knocked down as false.
Van der Sloot admitted to killing Flores, 21, in his Lima hotel room in 2010. The judges gave him a sentence two years short of the 30-year maximum. They ordered that he be expelled from Peru at the end of his sentence and required him to pay about $74,500 in reparations to Flores' relatives.
Van der Sloot confessed to robbery in addition to murder, admitting that he stole Flores' belongings, including more than $300 in local currency, credit cards and the victim's van as a means to leave the country. He fled to Chile and was arrested a few days later.
Another van der Sloot attorney, Jose Luis Jimenez, has said that his client was under special stress the day of the 2010 murder, which marked five years after Holloway, an 18-year-old from Alabama, disappeared while vacationing on Aruba.
Investigators have said they believe van der Sloot killed Flores after she found something related to the Holloway case on his computer while visiting him in his hotel room. The two met while van der Sloot was in Lima for a poker tournament.
He was caught in a taxi near the Chilean central coastal city of Vina del Mar.
Holloway's body has not been found, and no one has been charged in relation to the case in Aruba.
Natalee's mom to van der Sloot: 'I can't close the book'
In June 2010, a federal grand jury in Alabama indicted van der Sloot after allegations that he tried to extort $250,000 from Holloway's mother, Beth Holloway. Van der Sloot offered to provide what turned out to be bogus information about the whereabouts of Holloway's remains in exchange for the money, according to the indictment.
He was allegedly given $25,000, which authorities say he used to travel to Peru for the poker tournament.
If found guilty of extortion, he could be sentenced to 25 years in prison.
Peruvian prisons apparently have much nicer amenities than San Quentin...
how did he get a man pregnant, thats what I woud like to know
Did you read the article? SOME people's children...I swear. you shouldn't make comments on here if you arent' really reading what has been said for crying out loud!
I swear you have no sense of sarcastic humor in your entire family.
Todd, to annswer your query in all seriousness, he likely was taking the same hormone pills as you are.
He is living proof that prison justice is a myth. He is alive and doing well in a peruvian prison after murdering the daughter of a prominent and influential peruvian man. Go figure.
Sounds to me like Leidi is being passed around by the inmates. The pregnancy is either accidental or calculated; wonder which?
It`s the future of the child that may be jeopardized. I just hope that there are people around to ensure that the infant will be genetically his.
Just Grand!...all we need is an offspring of his becoming the future sociopath to commit more murders.
That is what I'm thinking – the poor child is doomed!!!!!!!!!
A credible case for the pro-choice movement.
Real tough prisons they have down there in Peru. If this guy was in an American jail, chances are he'd be dead by now, which is exactly what he deserves.
got that right
the poor man is just misunderstood!
should have got the rope and the trap door for this psycho basket case.Prison is too good for this loser. He is getting women pregnant in prison?..wow nice one, doing hard time has a new meaning
I forget. Why is this guy still alive?
Wow! Women are insane. No doubt about it. That kid's future is going to be a disaster. She should be forced to give up the child be because she is obviously unfit to raise children. Having the genes of a murderer is about as bad as it gets.
Why would they give him these rights? He should not be allowed to breed!
The Peruvian government should be embarrassed and ashamed that this animal is allowed conjugal visits.
Worst news I could possibly hear today.
Peru... LOL
Hope the kid doesn't get his dad's big ears. Well, that and his psychopathic killing gene.
yes, of course .. indeed in all developed countries of the world all children with big ears are systematically exterminated cause it is known and verified that big ears are a gene for crime and indeed in the USA the GOP has recently proposed an exception to the anti abortion law, where if it is shown through ultra sound inspection that the unborn baby has large ears, he not shall shall be aborted, but it is very strongly recommended to be aborted as a preemptive death sentence
@pbernasc: It's a shame that your mother didn't know you had big ears before you were born
