Texas mom gets 99 years for gluing toddler to wall, beating her

[Updated at 4:22 p.m. ET] A Texas mother who super-glued her 2-year-old daughter's hands to a wall and beat her over potty training problems was sentenced Friday morning to 99 years in prison, a Dallas County felony records department district clerk said.

Elizabeth Escalona, 23, will be eligible to ask for parole in 30 years. She pleaded guilty in July to a charge of first-degree injury to a child, a crime punishable by anywhere between probation and life in prison.

"This mom was pure evil, and her children are better off without her," prosecutor Eren Price said after a judge delivered Friday's sentence. "Her five kids now have a chance to lead a productive life."

Escalona’s attorney said that the sentence was excessive and that an appeal would be filed, CNN affiliate KTVT reported.

Escalona's daughter Jocelyn Cedillo was less than two months shy of her 3rd birthday in September 2011 when Escalona used a powerful adhesive to glue her hands to a wall and beat her because of potty training troubles, authorities said. Three other children belonging to Escalona, who was pregnant at the time, witnessed the abuse, according to Dallas County district attorney's office spokeswoman Debbie Denmon.

The child urinated on herself during the ordeal, during which she was hit in head and kicked in the groin, among other forms of abuse, Denmon said.

Oefelia Escalona, the defendant's mother, testified during her daughter's sentencing hearing this week that she found the girl and took her to a hospital. Once Jocelyn was there, medical authorities noticed severe bruises to her face and head, as well as a severe brain injury that led to her temporarily being in a coma.

At this week's sentencing hearing, prosecutors showed pictures of Jocelyn's hands and bruised body and forehead.

"The entire picture was very shocking," said Dr. Amy Barton, then a child abuse pediatrician at Children's Medical Center of Dallas, choking back tears on the stand on Monday. "I see a lot of children, and this was one of the most shocking cases that I have seen."

Escalona asked for leniency during her sentencing hearing this week, saying she behaved like a monster but deserved a second chance, KTVT reported. Her mother asked the judge to sentence Elizabeth to probation, according to KTVT.

Price initially offered a plea bargain of 45 years in prison, but Escalona turned it down, the district attorney's office said.

Price said that the judge, after learning more about Escalona during the hearing, was justified in sentencing her to more time.

"Elizabeth Escalona wasn't sorry for what she did to 2-year-old Jocelyn. Elizabeth Escalona felt sorry for herself," Price said. "Those tears on the stand were for her and not for the toddler she tortured."

An attempt to reach Escalona's attorney for comment Friday was not immediately successful.

Before this incident, Escalona had been investigated by Texas Child Protective Services but never arrested or charged, Denmon said.

The child welfare agency put all of her children in foster care after Jocelyn was taken to the hospital. All five of them, including Jocelyn, are now in the custody of their grandmother, Oefelia Escalona.

Sounds broken to me. She gets 99 years and Sandusky got 30. Yeah, broken.

As unfortunate as that is (and I'm not disagreeing that it's right at all) Sandusky and this woman were through two entirely differen't court systems. Also, even with only 30 years sentencing, that IS pretty much a life sentence for Jerry Sandusky.

Smith111, I don't think it's broken at all! The reason that Sandusky got 30 is because we all know he won't live past 30 years...heck he will be lucky if he makes it past one year! Both of them had their lives taken away from them because they abused children and that to me is equal and just!

Yeah, with this case. But what about another case with a serial killer/rapist that murders over twenty people and only goes to jail for like ten years. t makes no since that she woud pretty much get ife and a serial killer/rapist would only get a few. And it has happened before and no doubt will happen again. The system is beyond corrupted.

Mexicans don't spare the rod as much as Americans do. Having said that, there is no excuse for what she did. Yet, even so, there are serial killers who have received less than 99 years for their crimes.
      Texas judges are extremely corrupt!!!!!!!!!

This kind of sentence for this kind of crime is a perfect illustration of how broken the Texas legal system is. This obviously dysfunctional family needs professional help. Rather than use modern family therapy and common sense, Texas did what any 19th century court would have done....used a cannon deal with a fly. What a disgrace.

Yes she deserves mega time...but life? Seriously, you think this person couldn't learn from the mistake, ever? There is a lot worse going on in this country and they get less punishment than this. Aurora Movie Shooter won't get this sentence, I'm willing to bet.

No moron, people who hurt innocent children are the lowest of the low. People that act this way deserve to never see the light of day again. As a father of two, it appals me that anyone could ever harm their children. And the way she did it? Gluing her to the wall. That's just sick!

Really? What's a worse crime than gluing a two-year-old to a wall and beating her until she's in a coma? It's not a murder only through sheer luck.

And worse will continue if we don't make an example out of people. The system needs to put heavier fines on everything. All these people that think she deserves a 2nd chance know NOTHING about psychology, a broken and violent mind can be repaired, but never fixed. Either way she should never see her child and be constantly supervised, 99 years in prison is better for everyone except us paying taxes on it. People saying this is to harsh are funny, I think it was not harsh enough. We have so many misbehaving children, young violence, etc because we are to soft on people actions these days. Personally a rapist should be publicly castrated, a murderer should be stoned to death, I know it is archaic and brutal, but it would teach these people that there are EXTREME consequences for their actions and they WILL think twice. Now, a murderer if caught gets to sit around in a free jail cell for the rest of life and get free food. A rapist gets same thing but could get out on parole, STOP BEING HUMANITARIANS AND BE HUMANS PEOPLE. Monsters are monsters, treat them that way.

i agree i feel for the children but again 99 years is ridiculous murders have gotten less time this year alone there was a murder in massachussettes 12 year sentence was given for 1st degree murder. I know she's a monster for what she did but again it shouldn't be a life sentence maybe 3-5 years max and go ahead and respond with your negative comments im not bothering to look at this comment again

I don't care how sorry she is... she wasn't sorry when she was beating a glued and defenseless baby. She should be dragged from the courtroom and executed. Publically.

I was abused when I was younger, so her sad and pathetic excuse means nothing. You don't glue your kid to a wall and beat the crap out of them. There IS no justification. She isn't human, I have no pity at all, she can cry all she wants and beg all she wants... because it will fall on deaf ears. All I hear is the sound of a crying child, and I know why that child is crying. Gutless, and evil witch to do that to a kid.
