Texas mom gets 99 years for gluing toddler to wall, beating her

[Updated at 4:22 p.m. ET] A Texas mother who super-glued her 2-year-old daughter's hands to a wall and beat her over potty training problems was sentenced Friday morning to 99 years in prison, a Dallas County felony records department district clerk said.

Elizabeth Escalona, 23, will be eligible to ask for parole in 30 years. She pleaded guilty in July to a charge of first-degree injury to a child, a crime punishable by anywhere between probation and life in prison.

"This mom was pure evil, and her children are better off without her," prosecutor Eren Price said after a judge delivered Friday's sentence. "Her five kids now have a chance to lead a productive life."

Escalona’s attorney said that the sentence was excessive and that an appeal would be filed, CNN affiliate KTVT reported.

Escalona's daughter Jocelyn Cedillo was less than two months shy of her 3rd birthday in September 2011 when Escalona used a powerful adhesive to glue her hands to a wall and beat her because of potty training troubles, authorities said. Three other children belonging to Escalona, who was pregnant at the time, witnessed the abuse, according to Dallas County district attorney's office spokeswoman Debbie Denmon.

The child urinated on herself during the ordeal, during which she was hit in head and kicked in the groin, among other forms of abuse, Denmon said.

Oefelia Escalona, the defendant's mother, testified during her daughter's sentencing hearing this week that she found the girl and took her to a hospital. Once Jocelyn was there, medical authorities noticed severe bruises to her face and head, as well as a severe brain injury that led to her temporarily being in a coma.

At this week's sentencing hearing, prosecutors showed pictures of Jocelyn's hands and bruised body and forehead.

"The entire picture was very shocking," said Dr. Amy Barton, then a child abuse pediatrician at Children's Medical Center of Dallas, choking back tears on the stand on Monday. "I see a lot of children, and this was one of the most shocking cases that I have seen."

Escalona asked for leniency during her sentencing hearing this week, saying she behaved like a monster but deserved a second chance, KTVT reported. Her mother asked the judge to sentence Elizabeth to probation, according to KTVT.

Price initially offered a plea bargain of 45 years in prison, but Escalona turned it down, the district attorney's office said.

Price said that the judge, after learning more about Escalona during the hearing, was justified in sentencing her to more time.

"Elizabeth Escalona wasn't sorry for what she did to 2-year-old Jocelyn. Elizabeth Escalona felt sorry for herself," Price said. "Those tears on the stand were for her and not for the toddler she tortured."

An attempt to reach Escalona's attorney for comment Friday was not immediately successful.

Before this incident, Escalona had been investigated by Texas Child Protective Services but never arrested or charged, Denmon said.

The child welfare agency put all of her children in foster care after Jocelyn was taken to the hospital. All five of them, including Jocelyn, are now in the custody of their grandmother, Oefelia Escalona.

Should just put her down like the dog she is. No reason to pay to keep garbage locked up for so long... costs too much.

I agree that she deserves to be punished, because a 3 years old could not defend herself. But what law will this judge use to justify the 99 years, he just opened the room for appeal because the court of Appeal will find this a cruel and unusual punishment.
I say the judgement is unjustified, I would say the judge made his decision based on his feelings and not based on any law.

You have deemed the 99 years 'cruel and unusual punishment' for the mother, and that is your opinion and right to state so.

I'm curious as to what you would label, describe, assess the punishment the monster inflicted on her baby?

      I anxiously await your reply.

And to you I would say that the judge was justified in giving this sentence, and did it to show both this woman and everyone else that you don't always get second chances. That is what she wanted, a second chance. But you have to live life as if there are no second chances, and that means not abusing your children on the off-chance that you get a second chance.

There is nothing wrong with the sentence.

I read in the article that she could get probation to life seems like the judge was well with in the law.

A man legally buys 600 guns and illegally sells them in Chicago and gets found for four years in jail.

This woman does something terrible and gets 99?

The justice system is so reversed.

Sandusky gets at most 60? For raping multiple children.

A latino woman gets 99 for beating one.

I wonder if any of Escalona's future cell-block peers will glue her hands to the wall and apply some instant karma?

I say we glue her hands to the wall so we can hit her in the head and kick her in the groin.

THAT, as they say, IS justice.

The article said the children were given to the Grandmother I wonder where the mother learned that it was ok to beat up her children.

And Sandusky gets 30-60 years for squirting glue into 10 boys. I guess a ife sentence is a life sentence.

Where in this article does it comment on her financial situation, immigration status, lack of education, absentee father or any of the other things posted? Making these statements without facts is discriminatory and leads for false assumptions. The only things we know are what was reported – that something horrible was perpetrated on a child and some punishment was proscribed.

Broken home, poverty, blah-blah-blah, people need to be realistic, and adult makes choices. Who isn't from a broken home, who hasn't been abused.

I don't know... I can't defend this terrible woman... but this punishment certainly seems obscene and too long. The woman never should be allowed near her children. The woman most certainly be considered a felon.

Her actions and evil behaviour were not a 'mistake'. It was deliberate and calculated evilness.
There is no cure for that – not even 99 years in prison.

Her parents did not teach her well on what's right and what's wrong otherwise she wouldn't have 5 kids at 23. On top of it, dealing with 5 kids made it even insane and she likely lost her cool (which she likely did not even have). Now she and her kids will all suffer unfortunately (some people here think that at least her kids are now okay ...rethink: they don't have mom and dad too take care ..how are they okay?).
