Texas mom gets 99 years for gluing toddler to wall, beating her

[Updated at 4:22 p.m. ET] A Texas mother who super-glued her 2-year-old daughter's hands to a wall and beat her over potty training problems was sentenced Friday morning to 99 years in prison, a Dallas County felony records department district clerk said.

Elizabeth Escalona, 23, will be eligible to ask for parole in 30 years. She pleaded guilty in July to a charge of first-degree injury to a child, a crime punishable by anywhere between probation and life in prison.

"This mom was pure evil, and her children are better off without her," prosecutor Eren Price said after a judge delivered Friday's sentence. "Her five kids now have a chance to lead a productive life."

Escalona’s attorney said that the sentence was excessive and that an appeal would be filed, CNN affiliate KTVT reported.

Escalona's daughter Jocelyn Cedillo was less than two months shy of her 3rd birthday in September 2011 when Escalona used a powerful adhesive to glue her hands to a wall and beat her because of potty training troubles, authorities said. Three other children belonging to Escalona, who was pregnant at the time, witnessed the abuse, according to Dallas County district attorney's office spokeswoman Debbie Denmon.

The child urinated on herself during the ordeal, during which she was hit in head and kicked in the groin, among other forms of abuse, Denmon said.

Oefelia Escalona, the defendant's mother, testified during her daughter's sentencing hearing this week that she found the girl and took her to a hospital. Once Jocelyn was there, medical authorities noticed severe bruises to her face and head, as well as a severe brain injury that led to her temporarily being in a coma.

At this week's sentencing hearing, prosecutors showed pictures of Jocelyn's hands and bruised body and forehead.

"The entire picture was very shocking," said Dr. Amy Barton, then a child abuse pediatrician at Children's Medical Center of Dallas, choking back tears on the stand on Monday. "I see a lot of children, and this was one of the most shocking cases that I have seen."

Escalona asked for leniency during her sentencing hearing this week, saying she behaved like a monster but deserved a second chance, KTVT reported. Her mother asked the judge to sentence Elizabeth to probation, according to KTVT.

Price initially offered a plea bargain of 45 years in prison, but Escalona turned it down, the district attorney's office said.

Price said that the judge, after learning more about Escalona during the hearing, was justified in sentencing her to more time.

"Elizabeth Escalona wasn't sorry for what she did to 2-year-old Jocelyn. Elizabeth Escalona felt sorry for herself," Price said. "Those tears on the stand were for her and not for the toddler she tortured."

An attempt to reach Escalona's attorney for comment Friday was not immediately successful.

Before this incident, Escalona had been investigated by Texas Child Protective Services but never arrested or charged, Denmon said.

The child welfare agency put all of her children in foster care after Jocelyn was taken to the hospital. All five of them, including Jocelyn, are now in the custody of their grandmother, Oefelia Escalona.

As a survivor of horrendous abuse for 13 years (in the 1950's and 60's) – my question is?
Has the grandmother of these children been 'screened' adequately? to insure that her daughter, the perp of this crime, was not mimicking or repeating the treatment she received as a child? Frightening to see – that the most violent place on earth, these days, appears to continue to be in the unseen, secret environs of the family unit! This woman's behavior may have been 'learned' during her own childhood.

Good point LCB! Why are the children left with this POS's mother? She obviously didn't know what she was doing when she raised her own daughter. She should probably be locked up too!

You people have no idea what you are talking about. You have no clue about the grandmother so how about save the uninformed judgements for your favorite gossip group.

They don't give child rapists/murderers this much time...but a least by the time she is up from parole, she will still have a little life left.

This is ridiculous! She deserves a lot of time in prison, but considering how she didn't kill someone, and murderers get 1/4 of that time in prison, this is crazy! (What she did is absolutely horrible, but murderers deserve life)

The fact that these children have been given to the woman's mother shows that the system has failed. Where do you think people learn abusive traits like this?

I would let her rot in that prison...but first, i would make sure someone super-glued her hands to a cell wall and beat her.

yeah, you'd take her child away – all 5 of them? that she popped out before the age of 21? and i guess you would be adopting the next 10 kids she would pop out as soon as she would be out?

Can we have some type of sterilization in this country. I mean we are paying for everyone of these kids as there is NO way these people can afford to raise the endless kids they pop out.

I think she should have gotten a severe sentence, but I agree that this sentence is excessive. As said above, murderers get less years of prison. The legal system is crazy!

Yeah, the very person that was asking the judge to give the mother probation. Sounds like a safe place to be.

No, what she did to that child was ridiculous. She's lucky to only get 99 Years. She deserves the death penalty.

I'm opposed to the death penalty in all cases. She must be locked up for life, not because punishing her will teach her a lesson, but because she is a dangerous person who can never be trusted to live freely among others.

Death penalty for beating a child ? Huh. My mom did it all the times. Not using glue, but a hour long strictly enforced corner time was not very comfortable either. Death penalty for my mom ? LOL

She can't get that because she didn't murder the child. It's not stipulated in the law.

she is an awful monster. 23, 5 kids, no way to support them. 99 years might keep the kids safe, break the cycle and sent a message. Don't beat kids. She almost beat a 2 year old to death while glued to a wall. That is evil

P.S. Texas actually knows how to handle the justice system. The rest of the nation can learn from Texas. (No I do not live in Texas)

From what I have read and studied, Texas can get a little, err, over-ambitious in their convictions. Their policy appears to be convict (and sometimes execute) first, try to find out if the person was really guilty, umm, never - unless external agencies force them to admit to executing the wrong people.

I'll admit this woman seems to have done something terrible, and I do not second-guess their decision here. But don't hold Texas up as a standard that others should consider - it is far to eager to punish innocent people in order to satisfy a false image of justice.

Severe but effective punishment should be meeted out in such an instance, but the ineffective imprisonment and unduly long time period does more harm than good. The woman, if she come out, will come out a harsher person, and will tie ;up prison space and taxpayer money, the whole thing and much else in the system is stupid, stupid, stupid and the judge usually does this to appease the public and get more votes, they are politicians first you will note.

Agreed! Texas makes a point with it's prosecution and stand on the death penalty! So what if she dies in prison but the point is 99 years makes a statement to any person that would be charged with "injury to a child!" She asked for a second chance, why? So she could finish what she started?! No thanks! Honestly and the mother asking for probation. I was just discussing this case and KNOW if either of my boys EVER put their hands on a child, my sympathy is out the door and stays with that child not mine! Where are all of her children's fathers?! I vote death penalty! Either that or and eye for an eye... Kick her in the groin while she is pinned and helpless and put her in a coma...nurse her back and do it until she dies (99years).
