Texas mom gets 99 years for gluing toddler to wall, beating her

[Updated at 4:22 p.m. ET] A Texas mother who super-glued her 2-year-old daughter's hands to a wall and beat her over potty training problems was sentenced Friday morning to 99 years in prison, a Dallas County felony records department district clerk said.

Elizabeth Escalona, 23, will be eligible to ask for parole in 30 years. She pleaded guilty in July to a charge of first-degree injury to a child, a crime punishable by anywhere between probation and life in prison.

"This mom was pure evil, and her children are better off without her," prosecutor Eren Price said after a judge delivered Friday's sentence. "Her five kids now have a chance to lead a productive life."

Escalona’s attorney said that the sentence was excessive and that an appeal would be filed, CNN affiliate KTVT reported.

Escalona's daughter Jocelyn Cedillo was less than two months shy of her 3rd birthday in September 2011 when Escalona used a powerful adhesive to glue her hands to a wall and beat her because of potty training troubles, authorities said. Three other children belonging to Escalona, who was pregnant at the time, witnessed the abuse, according to Dallas County district attorney's office spokeswoman Debbie Denmon.

The child urinated on herself during the ordeal, during which she was hit in head and kicked in the groin, among other forms of abuse, Denmon said.

Oefelia Escalona, the defendant's mother, testified during her daughter's sentencing hearing this week that she found the girl and took her to a hospital. Once Jocelyn was there, medical authorities noticed severe bruises to her face and head, as well as a severe brain injury that led to her temporarily being in a coma.

At this week's sentencing hearing, prosecutors showed pictures of Jocelyn's hands and bruised body and forehead.

"The entire picture was very shocking," said Dr. Amy Barton, then a child abuse pediatrician at Children's Medical Center of Dallas, choking back tears on the stand on Monday. "I see a lot of children, and this was one of the most shocking cases that I have seen."

Escalona asked for leniency during her sentencing hearing this week, saying she behaved like a monster but deserved a second chance, KTVT reported. Her mother asked the judge to sentence Elizabeth to probation, according to KTVT.

Price initially offered a plea bargain of 45 years in prison, but Escalona turned it down, the district attorney's office said.

Price said that the judge, after learning more about Escalona during the hearing, was justified in sentencing her to more time.

"Elizabeth Escalona wasn't sorry for what she did to 2-year-old Jocelyn. Elizabeth Escalona felt sorry for herself," Price said. "Those tears on the stand were for her and not for the toddler she tortured."

An attempt to reach Escalona's attorney for comment Friday was not immediately successful.

Before this incident, Escalona had been investigated by Texas Child Protective Services but never arrested or charged, Denmon said.

The child welfare agency put all of her children in foster care after Jocelyn was taken to the hospital. All five of them, including Jocelyn, are now in the custody of their grandmother, Oefelia Escalona.

Bringing children into the world only to be tortured by their mother is something pro-lifers should consider. And their God wants this?

Abortion is legal and has been for a long time. Nothing stopped her from abortions. So your argument isn't relevent. At any rate, you saying all her kids are all better off dead?

If you don't the patience to be a good mother stop spreading your legs open and spoil kid's lives..Such a monster lady and she doesn't deserve probation..she would learn the hard way on what happen when they harm kids..Hope the kids get to be a better person in life without her.

I am a father with several children, the youngest being 2 1/2. Every day I'm blown away by the insightful things she says, the compassion she shows, and her innocence. I'm proud to say she's way ahead of the game in terms of potty training, but as any experienced parent knows, it will likely be years until she can completely control it.
Even yelling at a child for anything at this age makes so little sense. The exception would be things like starting to wander towards a busy street or about to touch a hot stove. The shock of a yell may save their life, now or in the future. Yelling for a potty training accident is just completely irrational. Hitting/slapping is barbaric. (Yeah, I know... your parents slapped you and you turned out fine. Oh wait, you grew up and are now slapping children. Hmm.)

How anyone could do this to a human, much less their own innocent child is mind boggling. Could you imagine what she would do if she was unmonitored with your own child?
Look at what this monster has done. I wouldn't even give her the same punishment. It's just beyond wrong. In my government this mother would be quietly put to sleep like a dog.

You and me are with sounded mind, controlled mind, and a better word, doing well ones. The story didn't say where the man or men? It looked as she was left raising these kids by herself. Imagining getting up all night long to feed four young children for years, this alone would make us walking no so straight as well.

Are you insane this monster should have the same treatment she gave to the child for the rest of her life!!!

I don't care if you had a bad child hood it does not justify what she did!!!! A 23 YO with 5 Kids how about keeping your legs closed or even better how about using bith control.

Why would they give the children to her mother? She is the same one who asked for probation for her daughter.

99yrs? while rapist and killers get 5-25yrs with parole. Is this judge using Sheria law, because obviously the judge lacks common sense. Next you will serve 99yrs for speaking against the president.

Rapists & murders should face similar charges. This little girl is lucky to be alive and on top of that, she'll be a vegetable the rest of her life.

Her whole future was destroyed by the one person who's supposed to protect her in this world.

This is a joke right? 99 years for child abuse? Anders Breivik got 10-21 years. Anders Breivik killed 77 people. What is wrong with this country?

Thats too much. 99 years its too much, at least 10 years would have been enough, she was woman enough to carry and deliver that child, some women i know abort theirs and don't get a punishment

In 10 years she'd be eligible for parole even sooner. And even if she served the entire 10 years she'd still be young enough to have more children to abuse. And with her current 5 living with her mother she'd be free to start up again with those 5. She might even blame Jocelyn for her imprisonment and succeed in killing her this time.

Overall comment: It's not that 99 years for this monster who called herself a mother is too long. It's that other sentencing is not long enough.
