Texas mom gets 99 years for gluing toddler to wall, beating her

[Updated at 4:22 p.m. ET] A Texas mother who super-glued her 2-year-old daughter's hands to a wall and beat her over potty training problems was sentenced Friday morning to 99 years in prison, a Dallas County felony records department district clerk said.

Elizabeth Escalona, 23, will be eligible to ask for parole in 30 years. She pleaded guilty in July to a charge of first-degree injury to a child, a crime punishable by anywhere between probation and life in prison.

"This mom was pure evil, and her children are better off without her," prosecutor Eren Price said after a judge delivered Friday's sentence. "Her five kids now have a chance to lead a productive life."

Escalona’s attorney said that the sentence was excessive and that an appeal would be filed, CNN affiliate KTVT reported.

Escalona's daughter Jocelyn Cedillo was less than two months shy of her 3rd birthday in September 2011 when Escalona used a powerful adhesive to glue her hands to a wall and beat her because of potty training troubles, authorities said. Three other children belonging to Escalona, who was pregnant at the time, witnessed the abuse, according to Dallas County district attorney's office spokeswoman Debbie Denmon.

The child urinated on herself during the ordeal, during which she was hit in head and kicked in the groin, among other forms of abuse, Denmon said.

Oefelia Escalona, the defendant's mother, testified during her daughter's sentencing hearing this week that she found the girl and took her to a hospital. Once Jocelyn was there, medical authorities noticed severe bruises to her face and head, as well as a severe brain injury that led to her temporarily being in a coma.

At this week's sentencing hearing, prosecutors showed pictures of Jocelyn's hands and bruised body and forehead.

"The entire picture was very shocking," said Dr. Amy Barton, then a child abuse pediatrician at Children's Medical Center of Dallas, choking back tears on the stand on Monday. "I see a lot of children, and this was one of the most shocking cases that I have seen."

Escalona asked for leniency during her sentencing hearing this week, saying she behaved like a monster but deserved a second chance, KTVT reported. Her mother asked the judge to sentence Elizabeth to probation, according to KTVT.

Price initially offered a plea bargain of 45 years in prison, but Escalona turned it down, the district attorney's office said.

Price said that the judge, after learning more about Escalona during the hearing, was justified in sentencing her to more time.

"Elizabeth Escalona wasn't sorry for what she did to 2-year-old Jocelyn. Elizabeth Escalona felt sorry for herself," Price said. "Those tears on the stand were for her and not for the toddler she tortured."

An attempt to reach Escalona's attorney for comment Friday was not immediately successful.

Before this incident, Escalona had been investigated by Texas Child Protective Services but never arrested or charged, Denmon said.

The child welfare agency put all of her children in foster care after Jocelyn was taken to the hospital. All five of them, including Jocelyn, are now in the custody of their grandmother, Oefelia Escalona.

Apologies for trying to advance my own agenda into a topic, but it's ridiculous to think that gay parenting is substandard and should be prevented/outlawed. Look at this piece of feces mother, and her automatic, assured right to parent with any lack of care or love. Gay people cannot have children on their own biologically so they PLAN and PREPARE for taking on a child in their lives. I realize no one is perfect and there will be good and bad parents of every kind. In fact that is my point, let everyone BE a parent or guardian who wants to... to please consider not to be fooled by, or perpetuate the misguided notion that somehow a straight parent(s) are inherently better than gay parents. Thanks.

Cezza, that chick has 5 kids at the age of 23 and was knocked up at the time of the beating. Lesbians do sometimes utilize AI but this chick is just a breeder like any other animal taken to the pound for spaying.

Watch "the tall man" film. The world needs more dedicated people like the one's portrayed. Save the children, Save the species.

You people are out of your minds trying to justify 99 years! Put your emotions on hold for a second and consider the punishments that murders, rapists, and child molesters are getting....nowhere near this long. Mothers who killed their children get shorter sentences. Take her children away, sterilize her (I wish that was legal!), and give her 10-20 years....or execute every murderer, child abuser, and rapist currently serving time, at least be consistent.

They offered her a plea deal and she turned it down. It also states that the more the judge learned about her, the more time he added on. Guess she's just not that great of a citizen to have walking around free. Although at 23 and having 5 kids, I don't think she spent a lot of time walking around if you know what I mean. I think it's too bad they put her in jail for the rest of her like. I say stick her in the electric chair, along with every other murderer, child abuser, rapist, etc.

We are out of our minds??? Anyone that harms a child in any which way, especially a mother should get a stiff sentence. NO excuses. Hopefully you do NOT have children if you do not recognize the seriousness of this abuse and yes, crime!

She is eligible for parole in 30 years, and she will likely serve less than that if she gets good behavior.

The prosecutor offered her 45 years in prison, which meant she was looking at parole in closer to 15-20 years. But she refused that deal and took it to a jury trial instead. Where the judge got to KNOW HER, and the judge felt like 45 years was TOO leninient....

come on man. Its not necessarily the crime, its the person, the mentality, and the actions. She showed no remorse for her actions and is clearly a threat to any other children she could come into contact with. I think 30 years in prison is the best for her and the rest of America

She badly beat a two year old toddler.....said again....She badly beat a two year old toddler. Think about what you are writing. She deserved a worse sentance that what she received. The other criminals that you mentioned deserve worse as well.

Are you a troll or just a complete moron? 99 years is more than fair for a monster like this. If I were the judge, also would have had her sterilized in case she ever gets out on parole!

There is no such thing as fair when regarding monsters who abuse children. Parole and appeals should not be an option. What they should do in prison is find inmates who are victims of child abuse and (off the books of course, regarded only as a coincidence) room them with these worthless excuses for humans.

What a shock.... Not white, has tattoo that is visible on neck, multiple piercings, 5 kids before 25... If only it was more clear she was a liberal. Gotta get that free welfare and pop out a few more to max out your income without taxes. Hell if she wasn't likely a catholic she could get free birth control that she would use wrong to thwart the 4 incoming pregnancies...

Really? You think people like this have any political affiliation? Also, top states that do not file income taxes vote RED. They voted McCain and will also vote Romney.

Right. So how about we defund planned parenthood so NO low-income families have access to free birth control

Now THAT will prevent all situations like this from EVER happenning.

      Oh wait?..... It won't?

The judge should have let her free on the streets, and declared open season on her by vigilante justice for 48 hours...if she gets away, she's free. That way, anyone trying to help or protect her would get some too...don't need people like her, or people that think that her being beat to within an inch of her life, or further, isn't the right punishment for this crime. Along with absolutely no contact with any child, especially her own, except under strict supervision, and NEVER alone...and no other children born from her can be touched or given birthright by her...ever. (I wanted to just say "never have kids again", but something in my values makes me less cruel about things and more to the point.)
I am however, surprised at the 99 years given...that hasn't been the normal lately. But she does get to go in front of a parole hearing in 30 years. THEREIN lies the only sentencing problem I see with this, and many others like this, case. You are sentenced to 99 years...you DO 99 years! That's how that should work.
    But wait...I'm being 'uncivilized" aren't I? *pfft*

In closing, I'd like to emphasize that I hope that Jocelyn, and anyone affected by this have the best recovery as possible..mentally and physically.
I felt I should put this in the reply, because that inhuman woman doesn't even deserve to have her daughter's name around anything about HER...even in comments.

This sentence was too light. Execution is the only sentence that should even be considered in a case like this.

She effectively got a death sentence if she serves the full term. I don't have a problem with it; in fact, I prefer that she linger on – and on, and on, and on – and gets to spend many, many years pondering her loss of freedom. Killing her is quick, and for her, much easier than serving a long prison sentence.

I'm glad she's going to prison. Do I think 99 yrs is excessive, probably. My first concern is for the children. I hope she never has the opportunity to lay hands on her children. With so many people out there that want to be parents & cherish a child I find it sad that one who was blessed with them would squander her blessings. My youngest daughter is 2 yrs old & I can't fathom the idea of putting hands on her in anything but love.

A second chance ? Really ? Did this monster gave a second chance to this baby ? Just picture this childs face looking at her mother begin her " please mommy give a chance "as she glued her little hand to the wall ,and hit her to a point to put her in a coma . She is were she needs to be , now she will have to beg the inmates to give her a 2nd chance because they will have no mercy on her .Maybe they will do the same thing to her ....

Leave her in jail for life. She's a waste of space and children are in danger if she is allowed freedom. She should be super-glued to the jail cell wall and beaten.

Sweet baby Jocelyn... I'm so sorry for all you suffered at the hands of that woman who bore you. She is NOT a mother...good mothers PROTECT their young with everything in them, they nurture them, want the best for them and their touch is not to be feared. Clearly, this lady is NOT your mother-at least not any longer!
I do not know your fate but I hope you survived and ultimately will thrive in a loving home where monsters exist only in the occasional bad dream or fairy-tale. God Bless you little one!
