Texas mom gets 99 years for gluing toddler to wall, beating her

[Updated at 4:22 p.m. ET] A Texas mother who super-glued her 2-year-old daughter's hands to a wall and beat her over potty training problems was sentenced Friday morning to 99 years in prison, a Dallas County felony records department district clerk said.

Elizabeth Escalona, 23, will be eligible to ask for parole in 30 years. She pleaded guilty in July to a charge of first-degree injury to a child, a crime punishable by anywhere between probation and life in prison.

"This mom was pure evil, and her children are better off without her," prosecutor Eren Price said after a judge delivered Friday's sentence. "Her five kids now have a chance to lead a productive life."

Escalona’s attorney said that the sentence was excessive and that an appeal would be filed, CNN affiliate KTVT reported.

Escalona's daughter Jocelyn Cedillo was less than two months shy of her 3rd birthday in September 2011 when Escalona used a powerful adhesive to glue her hands to a wall and beat her because of potty training troubles, authorities said. Three other children belonging to Escalona, who was pregnant at the time, witnessed the abuse, according to Dallas County district attorney's office spokeswoman Debbie Denmon.

The child urinated on herself during the ordeal, during which she was hit in head and kicked in the groin, among other forms of abuse, Denmon said.

Oefelia Escalona, the defendant's mother, testified during her daughter's sentencing hearing this week that she found the girl and took her to a hospital. Once Jocelyn was there, medical authorities noticed severe bruises to her face and head, as well as a severe brain injury that led to her temporarily being in a coma.

At this week's sentencing hearing, prosecutors showed pictures of Jocelyn's hands and bruised body and forehead.

"The entire picture was very shocking," said Dr. Amy Barton, then a child abuse pediatrician at Children's Medical Center of Dallas, choking back tears on the stand on Monday. "I see a lot of children, and this was one of the most shocking cases that I have seen."

Escalona asked for leniency during her sentencing hearing this week, saying she behaved like a monster but deserved a second chance, KTVT reported. Her mother asked the judge to sentence Elizabeth to probation, according to KTVT.

Price initially offered a plea bargain of 45 years in prison, but Escalona turned it down, the district attorney's office said.

Price said that the judge, after learning more about Escalona during the hearing, was justified in sentencing her to more time.

"Elizabeth Escalona wasn't sorry for what she did to 2-year-old Jocelyn. Elizabeth Escalona felt sorry for herself," Price said. "Those tears on the stand were for her and not for the toddler she tortured."

An attempt to reach Escalona's attorney for comment Friday was not immediately successful.

Before this incident, Escalona had been investigated by Texas Child Protective Services but never arrested or charged, Denmon said.

The child welfare agency put all of her children in foster care after Jocelyn was taken to the hospital. All five of them, including Jocelyn, are now in the custody of their grandmother, Oefelia Escalona.

Why not superglue her to the stand in court...and leave her there for a hot minute.

I think it is too hash on this woman. She must have mental problems, temper problem, and who know drug problem. Lock her up 99 years and taking her kids away does not solve anything but simply tearing this family apart for the final. Some years (say 20) behind bars, mental and psycho evaluation, taking her kids away would be enough. If her daughter actually died would be a different story.

I agree with everything you said. I was appalled when I saw the sentence, three days after Sandusky's sentence. Makes his sentence look like a slap on the wrist. Shame on this judge! Take the kids away from her, forever, and leave her in jail for 20 years or so, until she can no longer procreate, and then send her into exile. 99 years was harsh.

she deserves 99 years, she was offered 45, but said no. the judge said fine, 99 it is. she cried for herself, not her children and she was not sorry for what she did.

Sticks and stones, robby boy. Thanks for miscegenation and polluting the gene pool. Society is only as strong as its weakest link (I'm looking at your kids). While I'd like to believe you are a responsile father figure, I discern from your poor spelling that brains aren't your strong point. Tell me, do you support your children or do you foist the consequences of your poor decisions onto others by accepting "public assistance"? (That's a nice way to say I think you're a welfare recipient obama voter).

Might want to check your own spelling before dumping on others for theirs.

Another example that mothers are NOT always the best choice for the children.. Lets get to a 50/50 split and i'll bet you we see better parenting and better kids.

How can anyone see the picture of that poor little girl laying there and not agree wholeheartedly that her monster of a mother deserves every second of that 99 years. God bless that little baby's heart. I hope she can forget what that POS did to her.

Sad to say......but stuff like this happens every day across this country. Just that most are never caught at. You comment as though this is something out of the ordinary, but sadly, it is not. The sentence is a little harsh, for someone with obvious impulse control and anger issues. She could be rehabilitated in time, and for all we know, could be very remorseful and just needs help. Putting her in the slammer for 99 years (basically a death sentence if they never parole her) for this is too harsh.

Just another example of an out of control police state. There must be big profits for the politicians and judges in those for profit prisons they run down there. Really, she doesn't get mother of the year award but do you want to pay taxes to keep her locked up for 99 years? The system is just milking us 24/7. We need to do away with the state and settle these problems on a local level. Attackthesystem is a great website that addresses the problems of the tyranny that we suffer under.

There's probably lots more just like her that simply haven't been outed yet. These trailer trash "moms" do a lot of stuff the rest of people would cringe over. Same stuff here in Fl.

She should have her hands glued to a wall and then she should be beaten. 99 years is not long enough for her and by the time she is out on parol hopefully she wont be able to have any more kids.

She gets 99 years for gluing her child to wall. That guy in Norway gets 21 years. Ridiculous.

I think 99 days would have been appropriate to have a good lesson about not to harm her own child. It is indeed ridiculous to separate her permanently from her own children.

Apparently, you did not read the whole story. It did not say she got 99 years for just gluing the child's hands to a wall. It said the mother kicked and hit her daughter continuously until she urinated on herself and ended up in a coma. No, 99 years is not enough b/c she could still get out and have some quality of life that she does not deserve. A better punishment for her would have been the death penalty!!!
