Texas mom gets 99 years for gluing toddler to wall, beating her

[Updated at 4:22 p.m. ET] A Texas mother who super-glued her 2-year-old daughter's hands to a wall and beat her over potty training problems was sentenced Friday morning to 99 years in prison, a Dallas County felony records department district clerk said.

Elizabeth Escalona, 23, will be eligible to ask for parole in 30 years. She pleaded guilty in July to a charge of first-degree injury to a child, a crime punishable by anywhere between probation and life in prison.

"This mom was pure evil, and her children are better off without her," prosecutor Eren Price said after a judge delivered Friday's sentence. "Her five kids now have a chance to lead a productive life."

Escalona’s attorney said that the sentence was excessive and that an appeal would be filed, CNN affiliate KTVT reported.

Escalona's daughter Jocelyn Cedillo was less than two months shy of her 3rd birthday in September 2011 when Escalona used a powerful adhesive to glue her hands to a wall and beat her because of potty training troubles, authorities said. Three other children belonging to Escalona, who was pregnant at the time, witnessed the abuse, according to Dallas County district attorney's office spokeswoman Debbie Denmon.

The child urinated on herself during the ordeal, during which she was hit in head and kicked in the groin, among other forms of abuse, Denmon said.

Oefelia Escalona, the defendant's mother, testified during her daughter's sentencing hearing this week that she found the girl and took her to a hospital. Once Jocelyn was there, medical authorities noticed severe bruises to her face and head, as well as a severe brain injury that led to her temporarily being in a coma.

At this week's sentencing hearing, prosecutors showed pictures of Jocelyn's hands and bruised body and forehead.

"The entire picture was very shocking," said Dr. Amy Barton, then a child abuse pediatrician at Children's Medical Center of Dallas, choking back tears on the stand on Monday. "I see a lot of children, and this was one of the most shocking cases that I have seen."

Escalona asked for leniency during her sentencing hearing this week, saying she behaved like a monster but deserved a second chance, KTVT reported. Her mother asked the judge to sentence Elizabeth to probation, according to KTVT.

Price initially offered a plea bargain of 45 years in prison, but Escalona turned it down, the district attorney's office said.

Price said that the judge, after learning more about Escalona during the hearing, was justified in sentencing her to more time.

"Elizabeth Escalona wasn't sorry for what she did to 2-year-old Jocelyn. Elizabeth Escalona felt sorry for herself," Price said. "Those tears on the stand were for her and not for the toddler she tortured."

An attempt to reach Escalona's attorney for comment Friday was not immediately successful.

Before this incident, Escalona had been investigated by Texas Child Protective Services but never arrested or charged, Denmon said.

The child welfare agency put all of her children in foster care after Jocelyn was taken to the hospital. All five of them, including Jocelyn, are now in the custody of their grandmother, Oefelia Escalona.

A 23-year old with 5 kids...somewhere alone the line I bet she's been wounded as deeply as she hurt her kid(s). Society shows no compassion to the hurt and downtrodden. While her actions ARE horrible, she should have been put in some sort of rehabilitation program in addition to her incarceration. 99 years seems to me a little excessive to punish a person who's probably an abuse victim herself.

The sad part about what you just said is....you actually mean it. She is NOT the only to be abused in this country/world, yet they didn't turn out to be monsters. Maybe we should show leniency to pedophiles as well...they too were abused probably, let's rehabilitate them too!

Many people are abused - that doesn't justify it, nor change the fact that she deserves the sentence she rightfully received.

Ok this is enough to make me throw up, my gosh the sweet lil angel that the mother obviously hated 2 years old potty training rediculious......first place in my opinion to young to potty train any child. my concern now the mom has custody of all of the kids what if the mom is just like the loser daughter?

My thoughts as well. Most surely the grandmother is someone who is a questionable parental figure if she had a daughter who got knocked up so many times by such a young age. If she could not see fit to get her own daughter help she won't be much better managing 5 little ones. Someone please rescue those kids!

At what age is appropriate in your opinion to potty train...Both of mine were potty trained by the time they were 2 and going to preschool at 3...She should have gotten a life sentence!

Suzie, I agree this poor child should be loved and care for, not tortured and abused. 2 years old however, is not always too soon to potty train. I have 4 childrend that were all out of diapers by 15 months, but they didn't like dirty diapers and wanted to wear real underware. I have 9 grandchildren, the youngest 2 are 19 months and 23 months old, all of the first 7 were potty trained before the age of 2, and the last 2 are training themselves by watching their siblings. It all depends on the child. With that being said, this woman is not a mother! No mother would ever treat her child like this. I agree with the general consensus that something should have been done when she was reported the first time. I have first hand knowledge of child protective services ignoring repeated reports of abusive parents. Punishment does not fit the crime; how can we as a country change that?

Four little kids by age 23 and another on the way? I'd snap too. Of course she deserves an extensive sentence, but 99 years? It seems excessive. She's mentally ill, not a monster.

Is she a friend of yours? What a ignorant statement, she nearly killed her daughter and you think the judge was being too hard on her? Shame on you.

are you kidding me....?!?!? excessive?? I dont think so, this poor little 2 year old now has a severe brain injury because of her mother, changed the 2 year olds life forever!
But rest assured that when she goes to prison she will be LOVED because all the jail birds just love women who beat their children and put them in comas at 2 years of age........Just loved

Look Justme, very seldom can the mentally ill who have a history of abusing be rehabilitated. Whatever has caused this woman to be this way, she will be like this forever. I am a firm believer that child abusers should get the worst punishment of all criminals. AND, if the abuser causes the death of a child, then the death penalty is too good for the abuser; it's too quick and easy.

Thank god she will be incarcerated during her breeding years....five kids by 23? Do the math on that one. She could easily populate a small city. She will have to be buried in a "Y" shaped coffin.

Tammy, she should've been sterilized sooner. Who knows how much her other kids have suffered. She's been under investigation before- they should've taken the kids then. About counseling- also should've happened sooner, but the idea that she never had a choice in how she treated her kids? No way! If she knew suffering & had a conscience, she would NEVER let her kids suffer like that! Now I'm worried about them, in the hands of the grandmother that helped make her daughter the way she is (whether by doing things to her or not doing anything to stop her suffering), just the exposure to that family might be enough to make a whole new generation of abused kids.

There is an explanation as to why someone would do this, and the characterization as evil is not likely. I would say she was immature, impulsive, stupid and taking life's frustrations out on the wrong person for the wrong reasons. After a number of years people mature to the point where such conduct is unlikely. I do not think it would take 30 years for that to happen. Perhaps ten years, fifteen perhaps. 99 years suggests to me the judge is simple minded and reactive and has a poor understanding of people.

I thought she was kind of hot... until I saw the neck tat.

So sad... she was likely abused as a child and now perpetuates the cycle.Sometimes I wonder how some of these people's lives could have been different if I had been in the right place at the right time to act as a father figure / mentor for people like her and keep them from going down a horrible road.

99 years seems pretty harsh though – for all practical purposes a life sentence. Many murderers and rapists get less than that.

99 years is insane when you can murder someone and get alot less this woman needs to be re educated on how to control her temper and mothering classes while yes a jail sentence is needed here but nothing like 99 years she needs to learn how to break the abuse cycle through some form of edecation as with many other young mothers before they also inflict horrible injuries/death to an innocent child just a sad sad story but this is just 1 of millions
