Texas mom gets 99 years for gluing toddler to wall, beating her

[Updated at 4:22 p.m. ET] A Texas mother who super-glued her 2-year-old daughter's hands to a wall and beat her over potty training problems was sentenced Friday morning to 99 years in prison, a Dallas County felony records department district clerk said.

Elizabeth Escalona, 23, will be eligible to ask for parole in 30 years. She pleaded guilty in July to a charge of first-degree injury to a child, a crime punishable by anywhere between probation and life in prison.

"This mom was pure evil, and her children are better off without her," prosecutor Eren Price said after a judge delivered Friday's sentence. "Her five kids now have a chance to lead a productive life."

Escalona’s attorney said that the sentence was excessive and that an appeal would be filed, CNN affiliate KTVT reported.

Escalona's daughter Jocelyn Cedillo was less than two months shy of her 3rd birthday in September 2011 when Escalona used a powerful adhesive to glue her hands to a wall and beat her because of potty training troubles, authorities said. Three other children belonging to Escalona, who was pregnant at the time, witnessed the abuse, according to Dallas County district attorney's office spokeswoman Debbie Denmon.

The child urinated on herself during the ordeal, during which she was hit in head and kicked in the groin, among other forms of abuse, Denmon said.

Oefelia Escalona, the defendant's mother, testified during her daughter's sentencing hearing this week that she found the girl and took her to a hospital. Once Jocelyn was there, medical authorities noticed severe bruises to her face and head, as well as a severe brain injury that led to her temporarily being in a coma.

At this week's sentencing hearing, prosecutors showed pictures of Jocelyn's hands and bruised body and forehead.

"The entire picture was very shocking," said Dr. Amy Barton, then a child abuse pediatrician at Children's Medical Center of Dallas, choking back tears on the stand on Monday. "I see a lot of children, and this was one of the most shocking cases that I have seen."

Escalona asked for leniency during her sentencing hearing this week, saying she behaved like a monster but deserved a second chance, KTVT reported. Her mother asked the judge to sentence Elizabeth to probation, according to KTVT.

Price initially offered a plea bargain of 45 years in prison, but Escalona turned it down, the district attorney's office said.

Price said that the judge, after learning more about Escalona during the hearing, was justified in sentencing her to more time.

"Elizabeth Escalona wasn't sorry for what she did to 2-year-old Jocelyn. Elizabeth Escalona felt sorry for herself," Price said. "Those tears on the stand were for her and not for the toddler she tortured."

An attempt to reach Escalona's attorney for comment Friday was not immediately successful.

Before this incident, Escalona had been investigated by Texas Child Protective Services but never arrested or charged, Denmon said.

The child welfare agency put all of her children in foster care after Jocelyn was taken to the hospital. All five of them, including Jocelyn, are now in the custody of their grandmother, Oefelia Escalona.

I really try my best to be a christian, but when I see things such as this..I have a hard time. It is said that God doesn't do things with his signature because then everyone would believe in Him and faith would be irrelevant. But I can't understand why He could not prevent people like her from having children. How hard would that be for the Creator? Why must the children suffer? Of course, someone will answer with another "it's His will and no one can understand or we would be His equal". They always have an obscure answer.

The Creator does NOT have sympathy or mercy for those that harm children. It's one of the biggest missing punishments in the Bible because the sickest men removed it to try and minimize the guilt. Doesn't matter if it's catholic priests or regular people – he has NO mercy. And, neither do I.

God has nothing to do with this, real people own their own and don't blame others, I'm a Christian by name and faith and moved past blaming God years ago ...

Yeah, meant to ask if you were one of those God haters. Only those with a God complex or brain damaged pacifists would say such things. Hope you support merciless justice against animals like this.

The reason you're struggling with this is that jesus and god are delusions. Neither existed, nor exist now. We are somewhat evolved animals who are still capable of heinous acts. The mom's acts are horrible but chalking it up to imaginary friends only leads to more ignorance.

I am not a christian. But I believe that there is no such thing as "Good" and "Evil". Just like as you've learned in Physics class there is no such thing as "Hot" and "Cold". There is just temperature. Similarly, these are just events that HAD to have happened at the appropriate time. Why? you may ask. For this you need to understand that 'The God' you are talking about does not live in the past, present or future. There is a reason why it is said 'He' is all knowing.

Each event has an intended effect. Causality if you will. And this is hard to put down for us as Humans who are confined to the present and cannot say what will happen in the next coming second. Know that whatever happened could not have happened any other way. 😉

'SheWasChristian' comments here that they don't believe there is good or evil but only shades in between. This shows the typical atheists lack of having guiding moral principles other than their own convenience or comfort. The problem is such people as 'SheWasChristian' and the mother in this article do not have any means of knowing which end of the spectrum is 'good' or 'evil' since they believe their own 'intelligence' should guide their acts instead of any sense of morality.

What 'SheWasChristian' never shows is any proof that this mother had any religion.

It is because God had nothing to do with the evils that happened to this girl. It is God and God alone that can help heal this girl's emotional scars. It's because of God that good men and women are inspired to help, step in and rescue her from this situation and give her something better.

Without Christ, we have no hope, and this life is brutal. Its miserable, and ends in no hope. It offers nothing but pain. With faith in Christ, he can give us the hope and promise of so much more if we are valiant, serve Him by serving others like this girl, and keeping his Commandments.

Bryan,You are misguided and don't really understand your own faith. It sounds like you just got back from bible camp or something.... The "Creator" is not responsible for the GOOD or the BAD in the world, and I also don't believe we were created simply to serve Him. People/(Humans) are responsible for both the good, the bad, and everything in between. Live your life not serving, but being....

Piece of animal sh1t! This is what third world animals skipping the borders is bringing the states. It's bad enough we have to deal with our own 4th generation inbred rejects. She should stay in prison the whole 30 years, or agree to be permanently spayed so she can't have any more children, EVER!

Oh, eligible for parole in 30 years. Burn her tubes anyway and keep in till there's no possible risk to having more children. In fact, if she's in the states illegally without proof of birth right – her and the children's father(s) – kick them out of the country for good. The father(s) are half as guilty not taking care of those kids. NO MERCY!

It's easy to blame the monster and forget about child services. They left the children with this monster, despite complaints.

CNN, pretend that you are actually journalists, and investigate why child services hadn't acted. Maybe there wasn't a sign that trouble was coming, or maybe there was. To protect our children, we need to know if child services messed up.

A few more seconds of abuse and this would have been a murder. I'm so glad someone found the little girl in time. I can't imagine a 2 or 3 year old doing anything that would warrant any kind of physical abuse. The poor kid had trouble potty training because her idiot of a mother didn't take the time to teach her over a year ago like she should have.

Sad thing is that child abuse is happening everywhere, people. Your neighbors, friends, family, these monsters exist and it's not going to stop, that is, unless child abuses cases like this were followed up with automatic death sentences.

It's sad to see some wonderful, caring women, who would make great mothers trying so hard to fall pregnant whilst on the other hand total misfits having 3, 4 or more kids. Some people should never become moms and this Escolana is one of them. The judge did the right thing before she killed one of her own.

She was christian. That's why she did this. What's that thing in the bible, spare the rod and something else happens? I suprised nobody mentioned this. Had she been some muslim mother, you'd read comments disparaging Islam and culture. 😛 stereotypes. 😛

I think we all believe that what Elizabeth Escalona did to her children was horrific. The important question in our society is to ask, "why" we believe her actions were unacceptable. Is it only current opinion that makes it wrong to abuse children, or is there an immutable moral standard that states that such actions can never be right no matter how many people say it's "OK"? And in our society, I don't see how anyone who supports abortion can complain about what she did. If she had aborted the children, having them burned with saline then torn apart before being sucked out of her body, the pain of the children would have been much worse. "Pro-choice" is "pro-child torture," you just can't hear the screams. Let your emotions cloud the facts as much as you want, but the facts don't lie. A child in the womb, a child in the home....why is it a mother's choice to kill or maim her child before birth but not afterward? There is not a shred of medical evidence to suggest that a child's physical being fundamentally changes simply by changing the mode of oxygen/CO2 exchange from an umbilical cord to lungs...none.

Its a horrible thing to do to a child, but 99 years is far far far far too much. 10 years would have been more than enough. I think the people sentencing her are bigoted, holier than thou, brainless hicks and to me, they're worse than she is. It doesn't serve any purpose than to make them "look good" but only in their own reflections in the mirror.

This woman did a sick, sick thing for which she should be punished. But doesn't this sentence seem excessive? We sentence murderers to life in prison....Not to say that what she did wasn't horrendous. It was.

You do realise that in Texas, the normal sentence for almost any crime is longer? I am very happy that she did this in Texas so that she will receive the time she deserves.

Such acts are symptoms of the people who comment on such forums against religion. These people have no moral guiding principles and believe they are the ultimate determiner between what is good and bad. This leads them to believe that their convenience can be placed above how they treat others including their own children. The shame is that society will have to pay for all of the years of this woman's internment.
