Texas mom gets 99 years for gluing toddler to wall, beating her

[Updated at 4:22 p.m. ET] A Texas mother who super-glued her 2-year-old daughter's hands to a wall and beat her over potty training problems was sentenced Friday morning to 99 years in prison, a Dallas County felony records department district clerk said.

Elizabeth Escalona, 23, will be eligible to ask for parole in 30 years. She pleaded guilty in July to a charge of first-degree injury to a child, a crime punishable by anywhere between probation and life in prison.

"This mom was pure evil, and her children are better off without her," prosecutor Eren Price said after a judge delivered Friday's sentence. "Her five kids now have a chance to lead a productive life."

Escalona’s attorney said that the sentence was excessive and that an appeal would be filed, CNN affiliate KTVT reported.

Escalona's daughter Jocelyn Cedillo was less than two months shy of her 3rd birthday in September 2011 when Escalona used a powerful adhesive to glue her hands to a wall and beat her because of potty training troubles, authorities said. Three other children belonging to Escalona, who was pregnant at the time, witnessed the abuse, according to Dallas County district attorney's office spokeswoman Debbie Denmon.

The child urinated on herself during the ordeal, during which she was hit in head and kicked in the groin, among other forms of abuse, Denmon said.

Oefelia Escalona, the defendant's mother, testified during her daughter's sentencing hearing this week that she found the girl and took her to a hospital. Once Jocelyn was there, medical authorities noticed severe bruises to her face and head, as well as a severe brain injury that led to her temporarily being in a coma.

At this week's sentencing hearing, prosecutors showed pictures of Jocelyn's hands and bruised body and forehead.

"The entire picture was very shocking," said Dr. Amy Barton, then a child abuse pediatrician at Children's Medical Center of Dallas, choking back tears on the stand on Monday. "I see a lot of children, and this was one of the most shocking cases that I have seen."

Escalona asked for leniency during her sentencing hearing this week, saying she behaved like a monster but deserved a second chance, KTVT reported. Her mother asked the judge to sentence Elizabeth to probation, according to KTVT.

Price initially offered a plea bargain of 45 years in prison, but Escalona turned it down, the district attorney's office said.

Price said that the judge, after learning more about Escalona during the hearing, was justified in sentencing her to more time.

"Elizabeth Escalona wasn't sorry for what she did to 2-year-old Jocelyn. Elizabeth Escalona felt sorry for herself," Price said. "Those tears on the stand were for her and not for the toddler she tortured."

An attempt to reach Escalona's attorney for comment Friday was not immediately successful.

Before this incident, Escalona had been investigated by Texas Child Protective Services but never arrested or charged, Denmon said.

The child welfare agency put all of her children in foster care after Jocelyn was taken to the hospital. All five of them, including Jocelyn, are now in the custody of their grandmother, Oefelia Escalona.

I ask, is this a woman or a rabid animal?! I hope she is never released from jail. We don't need people like her walking/dirtying the streets of America.

She should be subjected to the same brutality that she inflicted on her toddler, by someone proportionately bigger. And you should be made to watch.

I agree. It's horrible. But several years in jail and she may figure out how to change... 99 years means a motherless child.

99 years is just and fair for what she did to this 2 year old. She glued her to the wall, punched her in the groin, and put her in a coma. What do you want to give her? A cookie?

Are you kidding me! Nine years is excessive? She beat a 2 year old senseless. She glued the child to the wall so she couldn't get away while she beat her. She beat the child so badly, the youngster was in a coma. She beat the child in front of her other children as a lesson to them.

Think about it. If this was a cop, who handcuffed an adult who could then not fight back and was completely subdued, and then beat that prisoner senseless by hitting the prisoner in head and by kicking the prisoner in the groin you'd probably want to jail the cop and throw away the key.

This is far worse. This is no simple abuse. The kid's own mother, the one person above all people who is supposed to protect her child beat her child into a coma. This is a woman who came within an eyelash of killing her child, or worse, turning her child into a vegetable.

And you think 9 years is too much? You sir need a heart and brain transplant.

@Eric, think about it a bit more. Aren't these children better off with their grandmother, who will love them and care for them, than by a women who might kill them the next time they make a kid's mistake. This woman might have given birth to these kids, but she's no mother. These kids were already motherless, long before the judge sent her to jail. That woman shouldn't be allowed near these or any other children, ever.

The judge should have sentenced her to 30 at least that will remove the chance that the sentence could be appealed because it is realistic. 99 years that will be seen by the court of appeal as cruel and unusual punishment and she will win the appeal.

Wow, 99 years? That's a bit extreme for child abuse. 5-7 years I can see.

Well, for me to funish a person is very hard decision to make especially out of your control, people make mistake by source of any means, so to judge a person like she must, it could be self explanatory, does she aware during the process or because she have this situation called unbalnced which means unfair.

What happens to the baby she is carrying now? Penguins would never do this to their babies. Penguins are nurturing animals, unlike this vile woman who was allowed to have four chldren with a fifth on the way. What a low life destined for hell spawn of satan pathetic less than human garbage! Nobody worth saving does that to her own toddler, someone who trusts her mother unconditionally. Ninety nine years is too easy. Let's dump her entire body in a caldron of glue and let it harden around her. Dump a million fire ants on her naked body.

All abusers of children deserve this sentence. I'm tired of seeing a constant revolving door for pedophiles and child murderers. Thank goodness this child survived, but the hell that stands before her as she goes through life is very worrisome. I hope this ends the cycle.

As long as she is in jail until these children are grown up, and she cannot have any more, they will be safe. I can't imagine that giving them to the maternal grandmother is a good idea unless the mother was a drug addict or something? Who created this monster?
