[Updated at 4:22 p.m. ET] A Texas mother who super-glued her 2-year-old daughter's hands to a wall and beat her over potty training problems was sentenced Friday morning to 99 years in prison, a Dallas County felony records department district clerk said.
Elizabeth Escalona, 23, will be eligible to ask for parole in 30 years. She pleaded guilty in July to a charge of first-degree injury to a child, a crime punishable by anywhere between probation and life in prison.
"This mom was pure evil, and her children are better off without her," prosecutor Eren Price said after a judge delivered Friday's sentence. "Her five kids now have a chance to lead a productive life."
Escalona’s attorney said that the sentence was excessive and that an appeal would be filed, CNN affiliate KTVT reported.
Escalona's daughter Jocelyn Cedillo was less than two months shy of her 3rd birthday in September 2011 when Escalona used a powerful adhesive to glue her hands to a wall and beat her because of potty training troubles, authorities said. Three other children belonging to Escalona, who was pregnant at the time, witnessed the abuse, according to Dallas County district attorney's office spokeswoman Debbie Denmon.
The child urinated on herself during the ordeal, during which she was hit in head and kicked in the groin, among other forms of abuse, Denmon said.
Oefelia Escalona, the defendant's mother, testified during her daughter's sentencing hearing this week that she found the girl and took her to a hospital. Once Jocelyn was there, medical authorities noticed severe bruises to her face and head, as well as a severe brain injury that led to her temporarily being in a coma.
At this week's sentencing hearing, prosecutors showed pictures of Jocelyn's hands and bruised body and forehead.
"The entire picture was very shocking," said Dr. Amy Barton, then a child abuse pediatrician at Children's Medical Center of Dallas, choking back tears on the stand on Monday. "I see a lot of children, and this was one of the most shocking cases that I have seen."
Escalona asked for leniency during her sentencing hearing this week, saying she behaved like a monster but deserved a second chance, KTVT reported. Her mother asked the judge to sentence Elizabeth to probation, according to KTVT.
Price initially offered a plea bargain of 45 years in prison, but Escalona turned it down, the district attorney's office said.
Price said that the judge, after learning more about Escalona during the hearing, was justified in sentencing her to more time.
"Elizabeth Escalona wasn't sorry for what she did to 2-year-old Jocelyn. Elizabeth Escalona felt sorry for herself," Price said. "Those tears on the stand were for her and not for the toddler she tortured."
An attempt to reach Escalona's attorney for comment Friday was not immediately successful.
Before this incident, Escalona had been investigated by Texas Child Protective Services but never arrested or charged, Denmon said.
The child welfare agency put all of her children in foster care after Jocelyn was taken to the hospital. All five of them, including Jocelyn, are now in the custody of their grandmother, Oefelia Escalona.
Maybe in 30 years, you're children will be safe from you.
And how many of the people lauding this outrageous sentence consider themselves good Christians?
i dunno, how many?
Outrageous sentence?? Didn't you read what she did to her child? This was the only abuse that was reported too. Oh, I suppose you think this was a one time event, don't you, idiot? Let's just say she was lucky I wasn't the judge, she'd be sitting on death row. That, or I'd let her walk free and let society take care of business.
Welcome to the world of Obama...The destruction of personal morals and a slow but sure destruction of America one little piece at a time....This is just another of many instances!....Obama is a real, very real threat to America!
Obama? This is TEXAS, a REPUBLICAN state. The U.S. needs to get rid of mindless Repugs who care more about themselves than the welfare of the country, just like this woman.
as if when repubs are in office the us turns into a peaceful paradise or somethin!!!!!
Child abuse didn't exist before Obama?
What a disgusting and ignorant thing to say about the president. How dare you bring President Obama into this? Not every hispanic is an immigrant and moreover not every hispanic is a supporter of President Obama! Individual wrong doings are NOT and should not be attributed to anyone other than that individual! Would you assign the unexplainable murder of the teenage Florida boy by an "acting cop" to Romney and the republicans? This woman is clearly unfit and should be put behind bars for the rest of her life but blaming her gruesome acts on the president and insinuating that she is an immigrant and therefore an Obama supporter, is not only ignorant but also hateful! I am a hispanic woman (no I am not voting for president Obama, I am a Romney supporter), but I am extremely offended by this comment. DISGRACEFUL!
Another obama voter down........Iknow....libs think she just needs help, or more foodstamps or an upgrade to her obama phone.
child abuse from where does it comes...I think they should have had the mother screened for mental ilness, treated for anger management and cleaned her up and made her drug free with no felons hanging around the house or her kids...most abusive homes do not church, pray, or christ-centered, no school or poorly schooled, drugs alcohol and drug addiction/abuse present in the home, absent biological father with abusive controlling males not related to anyone hanging around the kids: usually for monetary support for lack of skills...and family roles are dysfunctional and reversed where the children take on adult responsibilites. if texas didn't screen for and address and treat the above then they just added fuel to the fire of already high risk kids cause now the one parent left is in jail...are children getting treatment or just placement? look like again child protective services as an agency are only capable of implementing the extreme: neglect or condemnation...did it ever occur to anyone that the old lady grandmother may be the reason why the daughter is deficient in her motherly skills....
In a tiny small print line it mentions that this woman also abused her mother–the one who found and saved the child.
Animal
Dis beautyful child never asked to be brought to dis world.escalano and whom ever her husband was agreed on such decision.why subject her to such brutality?dis is realy sad.though escalano deserves to be punished, but I have something to say to those whom instead of comment on the issue on ground decide to use racial and religious abuse to back their grievianses. know it that the sin of this woman does not mean all pple from her clan are heartles nor christians wicked or coloured pple inhuman. HE WITHOUT SIN CAST THE FIRST STONE! God bless united state of america, God bless nigeria,God bless the world.LOL.
Yeah, because children really get the best of treatment in Nigeria. That's the only sentence from your post I could understand.
A second chance? It's a miracle that her child is getting a second chance! She could have died as result of this "punishment." What this lady did was torture and abuse. She blew it. No more kids, no more freedom. She has no place raising a family.
You don't need to ride the subway for ten minutes in New York to see some woman with a tattoo on her neck beating her kid in public. I hope this sends a message to the underclass that child abuse is not 'all good.'
But wait ...Jerry Sandusky gets 30 years for serially raping a dozen boys, if not more and this woman gets 99 years? Don't be Latina and have tattoos in Texas. Not to say thay what she did wasn't horrific, but in NY she would have gotten 12 years, out in 6 and some kind of therapy/medication.
This is Obama's welfare system. This monster should have been told not to have any more children the very second that she started getting welfare checks. The wording should have been ...if you have more children, we will cut you off from any further welfare and we'll take away the kids you have now...Instead of having the time to spread her legs and get pregnant, she should have been told to look for a job..any job...cleaning toilets would have been OK. She wouldn't have had the time to abuse these children.
These children of hers are forever damaged. They've seen too much and have experienced more than most adults do in a lifetime. They'll need serious therapy and a lot of gentleness and care. I don't know that the govt can provide that...it actually can't. What a waste of lives...

99 years does not seem to fit the crime. I would have given her 25 yrs without parole. That's enough time that she will never see her children grow, and she will never be her mother while they are growing up. By the time she gets out in 25 yrs, her children will all be adults, capable of beating the crap out of her right back if she tries to abuse them.
I agree that the sentence is excessive. I'm not defending her actions; they were terrible ... and she is certainly a danger to her children and should be away from them. However, I am a firm believer that the sentence should fit the crime ... not depend on the emotional tug that her crime has on the hearts of good people.
This woman was given 99 years for a reason. 1. Did you see some of the photos of the baby's head. Can you imagine someone getting your kid or your grandchild and getting those little hands deliberately filled with the most strongest glue you can get in the household, then put those tiny little hands on the wall and start pummelling her. See that picture in your head. The child was just under 3. 2. Age. Age is a huge contributing factor. If she was given a lighter sentence she may i.e. be eligible for parole during child bearing years (hope she doesnt get pregnant in prison), even at 45 years she would still be young enough to be a young enough grandparent to do the same things to her children's children, if for some sick reason they wanted to talk to her, or if she remarried and they whoever know. 3. The sickness and seriousness of the crime. Her other children witnessed it. Can you imagine the psychological damage bestowed upon these very young children. Demonized for life. Taken away from the home you know. You know men always complain that if a man did it he would get twice the time that a woman would. Well in this case, i think justice was serviced no matter what the gender was. This is a sick, deviant crime. Let someone superglue you to the wall and beat the crap out of you. The poor child urinated during the tortue and she beat her harder. Think about it man!
How did they unglue the little girl? superglue is impossible to remove...poor baby...it must have been pure torture for that baby.
Good riddance!
