Texas mom gets 99 years for gluing toddler to wall, beating her

[Updated at 4:22 p.m. ET] A Texas mother who super-glued her 2-year-old daughter's hands to a wall and beat her over potty training problems was sentenced Friday morning to 99 years in prison, a Dallas County felony records department district clerk said.

Elizabeth Escalona, 23, will be eligible to ask for parole in 30 years. She pleaded guilty in July to a charge of first-degree injury to a child, a crime punishable by anywhere between probation and life in prison.

"This mom was pure evil, and her children are better off without her," prosecutor Eren Price said after a judge delivered Friday's sentence. "Her five kids now have a chance to lead a productive life."

Escalona’s attorney said that the sentence was excessive and that an appeal would be filed, CNN affiliate KTVT reported.

Escalona's daughter Jocelyn Cedillo was less than two months shy of her 3rd birthday in September 2011 when Escalona used a powerful adhesive to glue her hands to a wall and beat her because of potty training troubles, authorities said. Three other children belonging to Escalona, who was pregnant at the time, witnessed the abuse, according to Dallas County district attorney's office spokeswoman Debbie Denmon.

The child urinated on herself during the ordeal, during which she was hit in head and kicked in the groin, among other forms of abuse, Denmon said.

Oefelia Escalona, the defendant's mother, testified during her daughter's sentencing hearing this week that she found the girl and took her to a hospital. Once Jocelyn was there, medical authorities noticed severe bruises to her face and head, as well as a severe brain injury that led to her temporarily being in a coma.

At this week's sentencing hearing, prosecutors showed pictures of Jocelyn's hands and bruised body and forehead.

"The entire picture was very shocking," said Dr. Amy Barton, then a child abuse pediatrician at Children's Medical Center of Dallas, choking back tears on the stand on Monday. "I see a lot of children, and this was one of the most shocking cases that I have seen."

Escalona asked for leniency during her sentencing hearing this week, saying she behaved like a monster but deserved a second chance, KTVT reported. Her mother asked the judge to sentence Elizabeth to probation, according to KTVT.

Price initially offered a plea bargain of 45 years in prison, but Escalona turned it down, the district attorney's office said.

Price said that the judge, after learning more about Escalona during the hearing, was justified in sentencing her to more time.

"Elizabeth Escalona wasn't sorry for what she did to 2-year-old Jocelyn. Elizabeth Escalona felt sorry for herself," Price said. "Those tears on the stand were for her and not for the toddler she tortured."

An attempt to reach Escalona's attorney for comment Friday was not immediately successful.

Before this incident, Escalona had been investigated by Texas Child Protective Services but never arrested or charged, Denmon said.

The child welfare agency put all of her children in foster care after Jocelyn was taken to the hospital. All five of them, including Jocelyn, are now in the custody of their grandmother, Oefelia Escalona.

This happened in Texas, not PA. History tells me that Texas does not mess around with nonsense like this.

Of course this happened in Texas.

The problem with conservatives is their might makes right worldview. Conservative policy is pure evil and this is just another example of the rights 'only the strong shall survive' mentality. In Texas this is commonplace, not much different than Libya down there.

Joe, don' have children. Don't get a wife. Please don't breed. Take psychology 101. The woman was a deviant and drug addict. I don't think she had a politic affiliation. Think about the child Joe. You can't dehumanize ever topic with conservative politics. There are conservative cheaters, wife beaters, child beaters, pedophiles, just like any other affiliation. Don't vote, I don't think you have the mental capacity.

Murderers spend less time in prison! I agree she is a monster and needs to be punished, but why should the citizens of the state pay to keep her for the rest of her miserable life? Her sentence should be re-considered and shortened to maybe 10-15 years IF she agrees to be sterilized. (Of course that may offend the sensibilities of the right-wing ruling party in Texas, but on the other hand, let them sterilize via hysterectomy and let the R party have the uterus for their very own. They can set it up on a little remote-control cart and just order it around to their shriveled little hearts' content. After all, control of a woman's uterus is their #2 goal in life, right behind screwing the entire country in order to make sure Obama is a one-term prez)

Or we could give it to the democrats. They'll set her up with voting rights, welfare, and food stamps. Everything a government dependent drone needs.

Did anyone here notice that she is 23 years old and has 5 kids? I'm guessing that she was raised as a "good" Catholic, which means birth control is evil. More evidence that religion harms everything.

Down in the southern right wing states this is just a yawner. The evils of the conservative might makes right policy. Ship all those right wingers off to libya, Afghanistan or china so they can live with like-minded people!

This is totally excessive. These so-called judges need to follow the Law themselves and not be prejudicied by public outcry and their emotions ! What she did was horrific but this does not deserve 99 years, she did not kill anybody ! There are killers, and murderers who are only doing 25 years. The judical system in this country is going down the drain by letting these unstable people on the bench do anything they want as if they were Kings and Queens.

From the article, "a crime punishable by anywhere between probation and life in prison." These kind of crimes against children should be able to have the death penalty! What kind of MORON does this to their child, their own flesh and blood. Obviously the mother never wanted to be a mother, she had other options like giving her baby up for adoption however she chose the obviously wrong choice for her and kept the child and this happened, I wonder how much other abuse that poor child has suffered though because of this idiot. I am sure the child will be scarred for life now.

I agree, and I hope she never gets out. Lets see how her mean-spirited and evil persona plays out in prison! There are women in there where she is going that are salivating.....and I hope they beat her every day!

If you knew anything about child abuse Mike, you would know it is a learned behaviour. She learned it as a child. The sad part of this is that some, or all of her children may follow the same path if and when they become parents. We can only hope that the parenting they receive from this point on can counter the harm that has already been done.

what she did is horrible. but 99 years in prison where no deaths occurred is a little overboard. putting her in prison for a period of time and taking her children would have been punishment enough. Murderers and corporate thieves that have robbed people of their retirement don't get these kinds of sentences. this is a waste of time as this will be appealed and sentence changed at some future juncture.

99 years is ridiculous. That type of sentence is an unprofessional emotional, knee-jerk reaction that creates more trouble than it's worth. Of course it will be appealed, of course it will be overturned – because it's completely idiotic. It's just going to inundate the court system with even more paperwork and even more courtroom appearances that the tax payer will fund. She should be locked up and the case should be closed, instead now an emotional publicity stunt will result in a drawn-out judicial process that benefits no one.

Yeah, the abuse was horrific, but the kid's not even dead. Rapists and murders get less. Our priorities in this nation are laughable.

She is a danger to society. As long as she is in prison, the rest of society will be safer. Our children are helpless against such abuse. When the parent commits such acts, it is that much more damaging to them. It is about time the courts start putting value to the lives of our children instead of considering them as property that allows people to do what they want.

Considering she will be eligible for parole after a third of the sentence is completed 99 years is not emotional or ridiclous. She will, hopefuly,, be past child bearing years and her children will have a chance to grow up and have fulfilling lives without the theat of this monster. We need more judges with the guts to put these selfish parents in prison for long periods of time,

In that this child now has brain damage and will most likely suffer the consequences of these actions for the rest of her life, it is then VERY appropriate that this person should deal with the consequences of her willful and heinous actions for the rest of her life as well... Had the baby died, she would have likely received the death penalty. This is barely adequate justice for a crime of this magnitude.

A monster indeed. Now her kids have a chance to live. Downside is the government will continue to support her in prison now.

Was the beating and restraint bad? Definitely.
99 years is an insanely harsh punishment. I would think taking away her kids would be penalty enough.

You have to understand that some crimes are punishable to the maximum sentence. And Texas doesn't take injury to a child lightly at all.

You're out of your mind. She should be taken out, put up against a wall, and summarily shot. That would be a merciful punishment for her - I could think of all sorts of other things I would rather do to maximize her suffering before she died.

Let's hope her LONG years in prison are filled with beatings and ill-treatment by the poor inmates she has to share it with.

Right...fair would be glue her hands to the wall. Beat the hell out of her, then give her 99 years. Only sad that in todays prisons these people can be segregated into high risk wards and dont usually go into general population. We need bring back the days of throwing her into general population where she is abused every day for 99 years.... yup sounds fair.

Pure evil – and not all child beaters are MENTAL. She is just a sadistic, mean-spirited and evil person who I believe enjoyed beating her children. There's no telling what they went through before she was caught. And by the way, anyone who has a three inch tatoo on their neck is pure TRASH. Living off the government – who would hire them? I hope she NEVER gets out and I hope the women in prison who love their children and can not be with them beat the h e ll out of her DAILY!

That is BEYOND absurd! Thus sorry almost made me cry. I can't believe that someone could do this to their child and just not show any remorse over it. People are crazy these days. And the fact that she was crying to get herself some leeway is ridiculous. There are many people who can't conceive and here this lady goes abusing her OWN children. I think she deserves EVERY last year of that sentence. And while she's in there, she need to learn that there will ALWAYS be consequences to your actions!
