[Updated at 4:22 p.m. ET] A Texas mother who super-glued her 2-year-old daughter's hands to a wall and beat her over potty training problems was sentenced Friday morning to 99 years in prison, a Dallas County felony records department district clerk said.
Elizabeth Escalona, 23, will be eligible to ask for parole in 30 years. She pleaded guilty in July to a charge of first-degree injury to a child, a crime punishable by anywhere between probation and life in prison.
"This mom was pure evil, and her children are better off without her," prosecutor Eren Price said after a judge delivered Friday's sentence. "Her five kids now have a chance to lead a productive life."
Escalona’s attorney said that the sentence was excessive and that an appeal would be filed, CNN affiliate KTVT reported.
Escalona's daughter Jocelyn Cedillo was less than two months shy of her 3rd birthday in September 2011 when Escalona used a powerful adhesive to glue her hands to a wall and beat her because of potty training troubles, authorities said. Three other children belonging to Escalona, who was pregnant at the time, witnessed the abuse, according to Dallas County district attorney's office spokeswoman Debbie Denmon.
The child urinated on herself during the ordeal, during which she was hit in head and kicked in the groin, among other forms of abuse, Denmon said.
Oefelia Escalona, the defendant's mother, testified during her daughter's sentencing hearing this week that she found the girl and took her to a hospital. Once Jocelyn was there, medical authorities noticed severe bruises to her face and head, as well as a severe brain injury that led to her temporarily being in a coma.
At this week's sentencing hearing, prosecutors showed pictures of Jocelyn's hands and bruised body and forehead.
"The entire picture was very shocking," said Dr. Amy Barton, then a child abuse pediatrician at Children's Medical Center of Dallas, choking back tears on the stand on Monday. "I see a lot of children, and this was one of the most shocking cases that I have seen."
Escalona asked for leniency during her sentencing hearing this week, saying she behaved like a monster but deserved a second chance, KTVT reported. Her mother asked the judge to sentence Elizabeth to probation, according to KTVT.
Price initially offered a plea bargain of 45 years in prison, but Escalona turned it down, the district attorney's office said.
Price said that the judge, after learning more about Escalona during the hearing, was justified in sentencing her to more time.
"Elizabeth Escalona wasn't sorry for what she did to 2-year-old Jocelyn. Elizabeth Escalona felt sorry for herself," Price said. "Those tears on the stand were for her and not for the toddler she tortured."
An attempt to reach Escalona's attorney for comment Friday was not immediately successful.
Before this incident, Escalona had been investigated by Texas Child Protective Services but never arrested or charged, Denmon said.
The child welfare agency put all of her children in foster care after Jocelyn was taken to the hospital. All five of them, including Jocelyn, are now in the custody of their grandmother, Oefelia Escalona.
I saw the report about this monster yesterday, too bad i wasn't on jury – she would get a death penalty. Absusing an innocent 2 year old child who didin't understand what is going on, why is her mommy beating her, this is sickening. I hope she rots in jail all the 99 years she got....and then more in hell.
Death penalty is too easy for her. She deserves solitary confinement for 99 years with no interaction whatsoever. It'll drive her crazy and is much more painful than a death row.
we have A LOT of abused children and, CPS not only wants REUNIFICATION for the abused child and their abuser but also push to have it. In addition we are hearing and seeing more and more MOTHERS being the abusers.....
They need to Super Glue Her Hands To The Wall & Let A Whole Bnch Of People BEAT HER TO DEATH !!
Wow... Leaves me speechless that someone could do that this story made my stomach upset... Just sick!
99 years?? That's ALL?? This POS should rot in hell! Did she show lienency to her baby? NOPE!
I'm sending her cellmate, "Big Bertha" a 55 gal. drum of "Gorilla Glue".
Disgrace to the world! Stone her to death!! lol j/p
Notice the neck tattoo. Let's hope that she isn't allowed conjugal visits. It's time to put these people (gang psychos) on an island.
I'm not one bit surprised this came from Texas. I know stuff happens all over the country but we seem to hear a lot more coming out of Texas from mass murderer's to child abuser's.
where are the 5 fathers in all of this . thanks for dumping 5 kids on society.
Right on topcat, but not fathers, sperm donors.
Sooo many issues behind this story beginning with a 23-year old full of rage, something that appeared to have began in her childhood. From hitting her mom as a little girl to brutalizing her own children, I say it again, what is all that horrific anger really about ?
As for Escalona, what in the hell is she doing having another child ?? Where are the fathers of these children and will they step up and be accountable? Will Jocelyn remember this horrific incident or even receive therapy?
Better yet, the entire family is going to need therapy as well as a fresh start....now the 43-year old grandmother has the responsibility of raising her five grandchildren. I pray these children are in the right and safe environment and on the road to becoming healthy individuals as they did not asked to be brought here and should be treated accordingly.
This woman is pure evil.
So, a rapist gets 3 years. A bank robber usually gets about 4 years. If you shoot someone while robbing, you get 25 years. And they give this woman 99 years. I wonder if it would be different if she was a white lady?
I remember an asian lady discipilining her daughter in our neighborhood. Her teen daughter was just going out of control. Mom slaps daughter. Daughter calls cops. Cops come. Surprises mom. Mom looks at daughter, looks at cop, and tells the cops, you are welcome to take her and raise her, if you think you can do better. Daughter was 13.
The daughter graduated from high school and went to college.
luvU... You must be a part of the TEXAS BRAIN DEAD society to think there isn't a difference between slapping a 13 year olds face and glueing a 2 year old baby's hands to the wall and giving her a severe beating. It's bleeding hearts like you that help these things to happen. Wake up and smell the coffee toots, our country doesn't need this kind of woman out in society again making babies. Ever !!!!!
I make 100k a year and just barely manage to pay for 2 kids, a mortgage, private lessons, their orthodontist, etc. Why are there so many women that do nothing but irresponsibly reproduce? Anyone with an IQ above a fencepost should be able to figure out you condemn yourself and your kids to a lifetime of poverty.
99 years isnt enough they should add glueing her hands to the wall and beating her
@Reason & Logic – I just hope you're not molesting and abusing young kids. And please stay away from Texas and the other 49 states in the US, especially kids.
Thank You in advance!
What she did was horrible but the sentence is excessive. Let's see billions of narco dollars laundered by B of A, HSBC, Wells Fargo, etc and not one person in prison ,yet we know the effect of drugs and tens of thousands killed many innocent both south of border and in US; largest financial fraud in history collapsing finances including personal of millions world-wide, destroying employment, housing, major economies and who is in jail? Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld etc committed war crimes and walk free. So a little excessive for sure I would say.
I agree that those others deserve to be in prison too. And Sandusky only gets 30 years?
Do you seriously think the sentence was excessive? This woman nearly killed her child and put her in intensive care for not being able to use the bathroom. She kicked her between the legs and punched her in the head. The little girl is on a feeding tube and breathing machine. Plus, has major brain damage. This 99 year sentence is pretty light. She got off easy.
They should have sentenced her to death by firing squad. Not worth wasting the resources housing her in jail.
That is the poorest comparisson I have ever seen. Criminals who physically harm someone, especially a child, should get far more time than someone who commits a financial crime. Where are your values?
Excessive? are you crazy? It isn't excessive she deserves every bit and more. Did you look at that poor baby?
do you really believe that 30 years isn't a death sentence for Sandusky?
I wouldn't worry too much about it. The sentence will be drastically reduced on appeal.
What is excessive is that the US taxpayer will have to support this piece of garbage for the balance of her miserable life. And speaking of war crimes, which you brought up, and have absolutely nothing to do with story, does the Gulf of Tonkin ring a bell?
Please don't clump child abusers with drug lords and gang members.... you give them a bad name when you compare the two.
@I Concur – just so you are aware, execution actually costs more to the taxpayer than prison time. True story, look it up.
