Texas mom gets 99 years for gluing toddler to wall, beating her

[Updated at 4:22 p.m. ET] A Texas mother who super-glued her 2-year-old daughter's hands to a wall and beat her over potty training problems was sentenced Friday morning to 99 years in prison, a Dallas County felony records department district clerk said.

Elizabeth Escalona, 23, will be eligible to ask for parole in 30 years. She pleaded guilty in July to a charge of first-degree injury to a child, a crime punishable by anywhere between probation and life in prison.

"This mom was pure evil, and her children are better off without her," prosecutor Eren Price said after a judge delivered Friday's sentence. "Her five kids now have a chance to lead a productive life."

Escalona’s attorney said that the sentence was excessive and that an appeal would be filed, CNN affiliate KTVT reported.

Escalona's daughter Jocelyn Cedillo was less than two months shy of her 3rd birthday in September 2011 when Escalona used a powerful adhesive to glue her hands to a wall and beat her because of potty training troubles, authorities said. Three other children belonging to Escalona, who was pregnant at the time, witnessed the abuse, according to Dallas County district attorney's office spokeswoman Debbie Denmon.

The child urinated on herself during the ordeal, during which she was hit in head and kicked in the groin, among other forms of abuse, Denmon said.

Oefelia Escalona, the defendant's mother, testified during her daughter's sentencing hearing this week that she found the girl and took her to a hospital. Once Jocelyn was there, medical authorities noticed severe bruises to her face and head, as well as a severe brain injury that led to her temporarily being in a coma.

At this week's sentencing hearing, prosecutors showed pictures of Jocelyn's hands and bruised body and forehead.

"The entire picture was very shocking," said Dr. Amy Barton, then a child abuse pediatrician at Children's Medical Center of Dallas, choking back tears on the stand on Monday. "I see a lot of children, and this was one of the most shocking cases that I have seen."

Escalona asked for leniency during her sentencing hearing this week, saying she behaved like a monster but deserved a second chance, KTVT reported. Her mother asked the judge to sentence Elizabeth to probation, according to KTVT.

Price initially offered a plea bargain of 45 years in prison, but Escalona turned it down, the district attorney's office said.

Price said that the judge, after learning more about Escalona during the hearing, was justified in sentencing her to more time.

"Elizabeth Escalona wasn't sorry for what she did to 2-year-old Jocelyn. Elizabeth Escalona felt sorry for herself," Price said. "Those tears on the stand were for her and not for the toddler she tortured."

An attempt to reach Escalona's attorney for comment Friday was not immediately successful.

Before this incident, Escalona had been investigated by Texas Child Protective Services but never arrested or charged, Denmon said.

The child welfare agency put all of her children in foster care after Jocelyn was taken to the hospital. All five of them, including Jocelyn, are now in the custody of their grandmother, Oefelia Escalona.

It never ceases to amaze how much hate & violence is expressed in these comments. How does wishing violent retribution on this person effectively communicate revulsion against the violence she perpetrated? It's just more of the same cruelty.

If there was ever a case for neutering/spaying the "humans" this is it! Five children – why in the F- can't there be forced sterilization or the death penalty? Maybe some of those good old evangelical people can step up and adopt five more children in need of a good home – result of no birth control, etc. In fact why don't "they" step up and adopt the whole mess of "children" without homes, tc. WHY do these things keep having children when they cannot even provide the basics – food, shelter, education, clothing, toys, training, etc. etc. etc. SPAY ALL OF THEM

The sad thing is she just got caught! Imagine what all her other kids went through. Why give her TV, books and meals for 30 years before parole? Why waste tax payers dollars? Let this evil sit on a wet chair with 100K volts running through it.

Unfortunately, this child had to suffer by the hands of her own mother. There are lots of children suffering by the hands of their biological parents and Child Protective Service has gone out and found nothing according to there search and inquiry. The child was harmed by the mere person whom she had to trust by nature. The mother deserves the ultimate punishment. Harm was placed on a toddler that could not defend herself. The system has to work for this baby. It was not proven that Casey Anthony did harm to her child. Elizabeth, would be continuing amusing her child if her own sister did not walk in and see the abuse for herself. I sure it was hard for her to report herself, but Elizabeth was clealy in the wrong and justice needs to be done. People look at the harm of children by an adult more severely to an adult murdering another adult. Both are evil acts. What we can do is pray for Elizabeth that she find redemption within herself, because she committed a horrible act on her own child and that is very sad. There are more people just like Elizabeth walking around having baby after baby doing they can not afford them and the depressions of life falls upon them and they began to do and say hurting things to their children that marks them for life. I agree with the judge, all of Elizabeth's children should be cared for by another relative that will nourish there mind, body and soul. It is more to life than feeding and clothing a child. They need nurturing and love, even when you do not feel like giving it. Every child doesn't train to the potty as quickly as the next. That is no reason to go and look for glue....then delibaretly glue your child hands to the hall....then continue to beat and kick the baby. She needed help long ago. Now, it is too late. A baby is severely injured and traumatized for the rest of her life. Elizabeth was not put to death, she will be enduring the same anguish that her daughter will experience throughout her life possibly. Her mother hurt her severely and this is going to impact her life as an adult.

And where is the father or fathers of these kids? Did they abandon the kids to this mother? Do they bear any responsibility for neglect?

Just a cryin' shame for that poor baby. Regardless of what that child does, super gluing and beating your child like that is inexcusable. Put her in general population. I bet she won't last long at all. What she did isn't a "mistake", she knew what she was doing. People like this make me absolutely sick and just a little more cautious about who my future children and my nieces and nephews hang around.

This is terrible, and she deserves to be punished. But 99 years? She'd of gotten less if she'd killed someone!

@tortfeaser – she's eligible for parole in 30 yrs... these days with overpopulation I'd bet it will be more like 20 when she's out.... at least her kids will be all grown up. Hoping she doesn't get out earlier than 30 yrs. 30 would be better because then she'd be too old to have more children.

She's 23 with so many children, one of whom looks 10 years old? That makes her 13 when she had her first child? She's pregnant with number 6? She's hispanic. What she did is HORRIFIC.

Who has time for tears for ANYONE with 5 children, no Daddy in the picture helping, either a low pay job or no job and probably not even a high school diploma. Everybody knows pregnant women are hormonal nut cases on occasion. In some countries that would get her off for murder.

She's probably crying with relief that she gets to spend time away from all those kids, plus she gets all the time she wants in the prison library reading and getting her degree.

I'm wondering why she did not consider adoption to give some of her kids a chance.

So WHY did she get to this point? You'd think with all those voluntary Texas Republican Charities.... someone would have volunteered to babysit for her occasionally? I mean it DOESN"T take a village, right? It just takes a village to completely abandon a single mother and her children until something like this happens... then it certainly takes a village to LYNCH a WOMAN.

The woman should NOT keep ANY of her children. However, on what is a community FAIL perhaps 99 is excessive??

And NOW Grandma has to figure out how to keep her housekeeping job AND take care of six kids. Considering this community FAIL, maybe some of those Texas Republican charities need to offer some baby-sitting services.

Why don't you take over for the mother since you seem to be negating other people's work. You seem to have a superiority complex regarding "republican" charities. If you see a problem why don't you try to fix instead of venting about it.

The article does not indicate whether or not Miss Escalona ever approached a charity or any other organization for childcare or other assistance. I feel sure that, while she was under earlier investigation, the caseworkers made her aware of resources such as these charities and encouraged her to participate, but I do not believe she could be made to sign up. Support and charity organizations are not at fault for not tracking down needful people who do not approach them. If this part of Texas is anything like the part of New England I am from, then the charities were already assisting many other needful families, not sitting around idle, waiting for tragedy.

At least by the time she can get parole, she's be too old to push out any more babies.

The grandmother did a poor job with the daughter. Does it mean that down the road we might have another six future abusive parents? Take them away and give them to someone else! They will have a better chance.

Somebody needs to do a DNA test on that baby and mother. The injured baby doesn't look much like that mother. In light of the actions of the mother, verifying she's not a kid-napped child is not unreasonable.

Right, because the grandmother did such a great job with her daughter! This is nuts – I don't care if she is a relative, her daughter/their mother is living proof that she's not a good mother and should not be raising more children. They should go to someone who will raise them well. I hope CPS checks on them regularly.

If she sticks around in a jail cell it could free her from the self-abuse of more mutilation by metalwork implants through her skin and the vile disfigurement of more inked drawings on her neck. Plus her latrino kids will avoid her contact adhesive

I'm not so sure they would be better off with the grandmother as their guardian. Is she going to raise them differently than her daughter? I only wish that other child abusers would get similar punishment. Murderers get off easier than this monster did.
